Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2026 Race Season |
 | May 1, 2010 |
5-7-10 UPDATE: Photo Gallery has been updated. Practice today from 4:00-8:00. Pit admission is $10 per person.
After two weeks of waiting for Mother Nature to cooperate, Midvale Speedway looked destine for another rainout this past weekend. However, Saturday morning saw chances for rain diminish which allowed for the 2010 season opener. It was an action packed evening with the four regular divisions racing for double points, while the Legend cars and Midvale Karting Series were also in action.
Tenth fast qualifier Bob "The Animal" Eichel and Tom Garbrandt led the 16-car field of McIntosh Oil Company Late Models to the feature green flag. Garbrandt set the pace early as laps clicked off without an early caution. On the move was Todd Ripley, a winner of four features in 2009. Ripley got a great run through turns one and two, before the halfway point, to overtake Garbrandt in the outside lane. The race's first caution came out at lap 17 of the scheduled 25. Under the caution, Ripley's car was spewing fluid, which relegated him pitside, costing him a feature win. That gave the lead back to Garbrandt and put McMillen on the outside for the double file restart. McMillen used the outside lane to race in front of the field. A caution moments later slated top qualifier Bryant Smith to the outside lane, but McMillen proved too strong and hung on for the victory. Mike Miller, who earlier in the race got shoved high and dropped to the back, rebounded for a strong second place finish. Smith took third from his tenth starting spot, while Bob Schneider, Jr. had a great run in fourth, and Greg Beule came from an earlier spin to finish fifth. Rich Marcum, Garbrandt, Derek Grewell, Ron Jaberg, Jr., and Bubba Smith completed the top ten. Schneider, Jr., and Beule won the heats.
The Tusco Net Sport Stock 20-lapper had Kevin McClintock grabbing the early lead. After an early caution, Ron Dague, started on the outside of the leader for a restart. Dague was strong and pulled ahead. Randy Smart, the top qualifier, took over second moments later and set his sights on the division's top winning driver a year ago. Smart was a little quicker and ran him down, however, Dague held on for the feature win. Following the Tolloti Pipe/Todd Miller Excavating #75 were Smart, McClintock, Bill Aubihl, and Virgil Ravenscroft, III. Smart won the heat after Dague ran out of gas with a couple of laps to go. Smart also took the track record down in qualifying with a 15.055.
The Midvale Speedway Pure Stock feature was a good one. The division, that looks to be on the rebound after a low car count in 2009, had a pretty strong field for the opener. Ronald Bunton took control early but the action was behind him. Second fast qualifier, Teddy Oliver, was making moves quickly through the pack, while his brother, Joe, the fast qualifier, was caught in traffic. T. Oliver sliced through the field like a Thanksgiving Turkey and found himself out front. With just a couple of slowdowns during the race, Oliver held on for the season opening win. Following the Oliver's Garage/Stewart's Flooring #49 were Joe Oliver, Bunton, Bob Passwaters, Sr., and Rob Scott. Phil Bunton, Jr., Bob Passwaters, Jr., Tim Lynn, Vince Martin, and Luther Chambers completed the top ten. Keith Anderson and Ronald Bunton won the heats.
Rich Hess led early in the Fast Compact feature before Kyle Grove took the top spot. Grove held onto the position until Don Rufener, Jr. diced his way from the back and moved around the leader in the outside lane. Rufener, who claimed the point championship one season ago, started right where he left off by claiming the exciting win. Following the Route 39 Auto Salvage/Tusc Tire & Auto #48 were Grove, Don Rufener, III, John McNutt, and Brad Henry. Jesse Page, Wes Ennis, Tammy Rufener, Hess, and Tim Frederick were top ten finishers.
The second Compact feature win was claimed by Earl Scranton. One of the tech guys from a year ago, Scranton is back behind the wheel in 2010 and was able to fend off Dan Konovsek, Neil Rolli, Jeffrey Orr, and Tye Kelly for the victory. Corey Evey, Larry Ennis, Phil Veno, Don Boron, Jr., and Ashlee Page were top ten finishers.
T. Rufener, Kelly McNutt, Earl Scranton, and Paul Stull won the heats. Page set fast time.
Brandon Huff won the Legend event after setting fast time and also claiming the heat win. A.J. Yoder came across the stripe in second, while Wendell Napper, Tyler Turner, and Craig Schmidt were top five finishers.
In an exciting Midvale Karting Series 20-lap feature, Jay Chapman was able to close the door on last lap challenges to claim the $350 prize and a set of Burris Tires. The Midvale Karting Series competes every other Sunday at Midvale Speedway.
Racing will continue this coming Saturday night, May 8 with Late Models, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, Compacts, and Figure 8's. It will be drivers choose their lane night for starts and restarts. Cars will line up single file and then choose inside or outside the cone. Strategy will come into play and drivers will have the chance to pick up spots before even going green. The concession stands will also have the popular $1 Dogs/$1 Pops all night long.
Pit gates open at 2:00, hotlaps and grandstands at 3:00, qualifying at 4:30, and racing at 6:30.
Grandstand admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors 62+, $8 for kids 6-15, and children 5 and under are free.
