 The final night of the 2009-racing season is now complete at Midvale Speedway. The season ending Compact Nationals had 30+ drivers vying for the 24 spots in the 50 lap feature. The Pure Stocks and Figure 8's were also on hand.
After the main feature field was set, A.J. Diano and Rich Hess brought the field to green with the veteran, Diano, taking the early lead. His lead was short lived, though, as his car's handle wasn't quite there for him. On lap five, Jim Poole, the third place starter went into the top spot to set the pace over the next ten circuits. On the move in the outside lane was Tim Westerfield, Jr. The Akron, Ohio competitor moved to the high side of Poole, and for two laps, into the lead. On lap seventeen, though, both drivers got shuffled back into the field after contact in the first and second turns. The new leader was Russell Grandison. Grandison, who started eighth, put his car on the inside lane and led a number of drivers over the final 30+ laps. Diano, Jake Albright, Derek Grewell, and Rich Dunlap all held the second spot between laps 18 and 31. For Dunlap, he put on a show just getting into second from his 13th starting spot. Dunlap was a little quicker than Grandison but he never could pull alongside to mount a serious challenge. As the race took the checkered, it was the Graphic Shack/John McNutt Racing #72 of Grandison followed by Dunlap, Johnny Campbell, Westerfield, and Diano. Rich Hess, Bryce Allensworth, Wes Ennis, Dan Westfall, and Troy Timms were top ten finishers.
Derek Grewell won the ten car fast dash, while A.J. Diano, Rich Hess, and Jim Poole won the heats. Troy Timms won the last chance and Dan Westfall won the non-winners race. John McNutt was top qualifier.
Brian Minard led the early laps of the Integrity Auto/Conrad Insurance Pure Stock feature. On lap seven, top qualifier Tad Grove took the top spot away and went on to victory. Following the J.D. Byrider/Greg's Recovery #3 were Minard, Todd Miller, Bob Passwaters, Sr., and Shawn Kaufman. Grove won the dash, while Minard won the heat. Bob Passwaters, Sr. claimed the non-winners race.
Neil Rolli claimed the Figure 8 feature win after a hard crash in an earlier Compact race. Tim Frederick and Jason Grewell were the race's other finishers.
The 2009-racing season is officially over. Midvale Speedway officials would like to thank everyone who helped make this season possible. Information on the 2010 season will be available at www.midvalespeedway.com in the offseason.
