Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2026 Race Season |
 | September 19, 2009 |
This past Saturday, September 19, featured exciting racing for five divisions plus the first ever trailer race at Midvale Speedway. The Late Model 35-lapper saw the top qualifier come from the 13th starting spot to claim the victory, while the trailer race may have been one of the most unbelievable races in Midvale's history.
The McIntosh Oil Company Late Models ran 35 laps for $1,000 to win with Gene Molnar, Jr. leading early. On the move was Rich Dessecker, who was looking for his second win in a row. Dessecker took the lead on lap four, with Greg Beule, Rich Marcum, and Todd Ripley who came from 13th, in tow. Ripley moved up to third on lap 15 and took second on lap 21. Two laps later, the outside lane continued to pay dividends as Ripley became the new leader. From there, the Gnadenhutten, Ohio driver set sail to claim the victory. Following the Wood Electric/Ripley's Nursery #00 were Dessecker, Beule, Mike Miller, and Bob Schneider, Jr. The other top ten finishers were Molnar, Emerson Huffman, Dave McAlicker, Scott Robinson, and Bob Eichel. Schneider and Eichel won the heats.
The Tusco Net Sport Stock feature saw Nick Grubbs getting the early jump. Kevin McClintock and Ron Dague followed closely until Randy Smart moved into third. McClintock tried for many laps to get around Grubbs but eventually fell behind Smart in third. Coming to the checkered, Grubbs claimed his second victory of the season, while Smart, McClintock, Mike Jones, and Dague were top five finishers. Grubbs also won the heat, while Dague set fast time.
Larry Smith led the first three laps of the Integrity Auto/Conrad Insurance Pure Stock feature before teammate Teddy Oliver worked by. Oliver, who set fast time earlier, raced out front, while Chris Mick, the Barberton Speedway champion threatened. Mick ran the highlane for a number of laps before sliding back off of the second turn. At the finish, Oliver was followed by Mick, Tad Grove, Larry Smith, and Jeff Anthony. Mick won the heat.
Don Rufener, Jr. started up front in the Parkway Auto Group Compact fast feature. Rufener, the 2009 point champion proved to be tough to pass and held on for the $100 top prize. John McNutt, Johnny Campbell, Jesse Page, and Jim Poole were top five finishers. Others in the top ten were Brad Henry, Adam Mishler, Rich Hess, Russell Grandison, and Jason Nealey.
Don Rufener, III made it a clean sweep for the Animal racing team by winning the Compact second feature. Larry Ennis, Neil Rolli, Ron Myers, and Jill Harshey claimed top five's.
Compact preliminary races went to Jim Poole, Bryce Allensworth, Ron Myers, and Richard Duvall. Rich Dunlap set fast time.
Derek Grewell continued his mastery of wild races by claiming wins in the Figure 8 and in the trailer race. The back-to-back victories gave him $900 and a lot of pride. The trailer race featured so much carnage it was tough to keep up with. Fourth place finisher Joe Fewkes actually finished the last two laps on the trailer of fellow competitor John White.
Midvale Speedway will have its final race of the year on Saturday, October 3. Details coming soon.
