2009 Season Championships Are History
September 12, 2009

2009 Season Championships Are History
After a grueling 2009-point season, drivers were ready for the final night in the championship race this past Saturday, September 12, at Midvale Speedway. Coming into the night, three division championships were already decided as Kevin McClintock, Todd Miller, and Derek Grewell had locked up the Sport Stock, Pure Stock, and Figure 8 titles. Late Model and Compact point battles were not finished until each of the two features had seen the checkered.

In the track's premier McIntosh Oil Company Late Model division, a stellar field of 20-cars were again pitside for the night's events. After Bubba Smith, who held just an 11 point lead on Mike Miller entering the night, set fast time, he rolled a ten putting George Riddle and Rich Dessecker on the front row for the 25-lap event. With the green waving, Dessecker used the sticky outside lane to his advantage by taking the top spot. Behind him, drivers were racing vigorously trying to move around the polesitter. Bob Schneider, Jr. and Mike Miller moved into second and third by way of the outside lane, while Riddle was involved in a lap two caution. Back to green, Miller picked up the second spot and for a moment or so had the point lead back. However, Smith was working his way forward. With a fifteen point advantage entering the feature, Smith had to finish within three spots of Miller to hold onto the championship. Once the Canton, Ohio driver moved into the fourth spot, with Miller running second, Smith knew he was in a good position. His only scare came on lap nine when Rich Marcum made contact with his left rear quarter, sending him spinning. Smith restarted in fourth, while Marcum was charged for the mishap. Coming down to the finish, neither driver would step out of line, while Dessecker never made a mistake. The Malcuit Engines/Malcuit Tavern #49 claimed its first win of 2009 while Smith won his first career point championship by just 7 points. Following New Philadelphia, Ohio's Rich Dessecker across the stripe were Miller, Todd Ripley, Smith, and John Sluka. Blake Mackey, Ron Jaberg, Jr., Bryant Smith, Greg Beule, and Joel McKnight were top ten finishers. Schneider, Jr., Bryant Smith, and McKnight won the heat races. The Late Models will be running their final race of the season this Saturday, September 19 for $1,000 to win in a 35-lapper.

As previously mentioned, the Tusco Net Sport Stock championship had already been claimed for a third straight time by Dover, Ohio's Kevin McClintock. All that was left to be decided was the 20-lap season championship feature with bonus money from McBride's Auto Service and KRC Racecars. With $500 on the line, drivers were frantically trying to get to the front early. Pure Stock competitor Tad Grove led the first couple of laps, while drivers shuffled behind him. In the process, one of the front runners Ron Dague got caught up in a mishap and damaged the radiator. That left things up to Nick Grubbs, McClintock, and top qualifier Randy Smart to decide. Smart picked the right lane and moved into the lead on lap three to set sail. McClintock later rebounded from an early race accident to become the runner-up. A late race caution lined them up bumper-to-bumper, but Smart was able to pick up the win in his Dr. Kurt Garren/Shook Auto #17. McClintock, Grubbs, Jerry McNealy, and Bill Burkholder were top five finishers. The rest of the top ten were Kevin Locker, Chris Miller, Ron Kirkpatrick, Grove, and Dague. Grubbs won the heat. The Sport Stocks will be racing some additional laps for extra money in this weekend's Fall Classic as their final race of the season.

Todd Miller, of New Cumberland, Ohio, claimed the point title in the Integrity Auto Sales/Conrad Insurance Pure Stocks after last week's race. In the 20-lap season championship main event, Brian Minard, the point runner up moved into the lead to set the pace. He had a pack of cars challenging and they were all teammates. Larry Smith followed him closely but couldn't get by. Making the pass was not a problem for top qualifier Teddy Oliver. The veteran Pure Stock racer was coming off of a hard crash the week before but the car didn't seem to be affected very badly. Oliver became the pace sitter on lap four and never looked back racing to the win. The C&M Auto Sales/All For You Auto Sales #49 cruised to the victory while all eyes were on a tight second place battle between Minard and Smith. Minard held him off, while Smith, Shawn Kaufman, and Bob Passwaters, Jr. were top five finishers. Minard won the heat. The Pure Stocks have two nights remain, September 19 and October 3.

Much like Bubba Smith, Don Rufener, Jr. held a slim lead for a point championship in the Parkway Auto Group Compact division. Coming into the feature, the Uhrichsville, Ohio driver had a 12 point advantage over John McNutt, meaning he would have to finish no more than three spots behind his fellow competitor. An advantage for Rufener was starting in front of McNutt in the 20-lap main. As the cars raced early, Rufener was moving forward looking like a challenger for the win. Russell Grandison led before Brad Henry took over on lap seven. Henry and Rufener then waged in a battle for a number of laps. With one to go, Rufener edged ahead leading the lap. However, coming off of turn two, Kelly McNutt made it a three wide battle pushing Rufener sideways and nearly into a spin. The veteran driver was able to regain control in time to save his championship, but McNutt claimed the victory. Following Kelly McNutt to his exciting feature win were his uncle John McNutt, Rufener, Johnny Campbell, and Grandison. Henry, Jesse Page, Rich Hess, Wes Ennis, and Jay Hunt were top ten finishers. With John McNutt taking second on the last lap, the final winning margin was just 8 points for Don Rufener, Jr. The Compacts will be racing this week as well as October 3 with some payoff scheduled for both nights.

The second Compact feature was a wild one as there were about six lead changes in the 20-lap event. Taylor Moore led lap one before Neil Rolli moved out front. Then Moore took back over for three laps with five complete. Next up was Jim Poole for just one circuit, lap nine. Cliff Cox, coming from the back of the field moved out front at the halfway point and looked destined for victory. Poole stayed close, though, in fact pulling alongside at one point. With one to go, Poole ducked to the inside lane and a wild lap ensued. Cox got bounced around a bit, driving the Ron Myers #4 ride as his experienced mechanical issues. Coming to the checkered, the Somerdale Inn/250 Split #69 was followed by Don Rufener, III, Cox, Jason Anthony, and Tammy Rufener. Others in the top ten were Larry Ennis, Tim Frederick, Rusty Rouse, Jr., Rolli, and Jeffrey Orr. Cox and Tammy Rufener were eliminated from the rundown for nonstop bickering in the tech line.

Compact preliminary races were claimed by Kelly McNutt, Rich Dunlap, Jake Albright, and Neil Rolli. Kyle Rector set fast time.

Neil Rolli moved into the lead on the first lap of the Figure 8 feature and never faltered claiming the season championship win. Brad Henry, Tim Frederick, Joe Konovsek, and Jason Grewell were top five finishers. Point leader Derek Grewell had the championship locked up coming into the night and finished sixth. The Figure 8's will again run this week and will also qualify for the first time this season. Qualifying will be held after the Late Models go at approximately 5:20.

The 2009-Fall Classic will be held this coming Saturday, September 19. The first ever Midvale Speedway Trailer Race will be held. Over 10 participants have signed up for the $700 to win race. The one of a kind type event will be joined by Late Models, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, Compacts, and Figure 8's. Spectator Drags will be held at intermission. Extra money is on the line for all divisions on this special night.

The event will see a special racetime of 6:00 instead of the normal start time. Pits will open at 2:00, hotlaps at 2:30, and qualifying will begin at 4:00. Sport Stock and Pure Stock bonus money will be given to the top three feature finishers of car/driver combinations that have not raced at the track in 2009.

Grandstand admission is $15 for adults and seniors and $8 for kids 6-15. Children 5 and under are free. Pit admission is $25 for members and $30 for non-members. An additional practice will be held Friday from 4:00-8:00 with $10 pit admission.
