With September here, the 2009 season is down to just a few weeks left at Midvale Speedway. Fans were treated to a huge field of McIntosh Oil Company Late Models, as for the first time in recent memory a last chance race was necessary. Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, Compacts, and Figure 8's were also competing on the next to last night of point racing.
In McIntosh Oil Company Late Model qualifying, the top 16 drivers were locked in. The other eight were put into a last chance race to battle for feature life. Kenny Cantrell, Joel McKnight, Paul Adkins, and Gene Molnar, Jr. were the four that transferred in via the consy race. With a twelve invert for the feature, George Riddle and Bryant Smith brought the field to green. Riddle, having a hard time keeping his car on the bottom on the exit of two, kept opening up a hole for Todd Ripley to go three wide on the back stretch. Ripley, each time, would make it by without much issue but problems would arise behind him as drivers shuffled for positions. Eventually, after a number of complete restarts a lap was completed. The drivers from lap one to lap fifteen ran caution free, putting on a pretty good show. Over the final ten circuits, it was Ripley followed by Doug McMillen and Bubba Smith. Smith was racing hard trying to make a run on McMillen, but on the other hand was being semi cautious knowing that he was picking up important points on standings leader Mike Miller. Coming to the checkered, Ripley picked up his third feature win of the season, while McMillen, Smith, Greg Beule, and Rich Marcum had top five finishes. Others in the top ten were Rich Dessecker, John Sandquist, Jr., Miller, Bryant Smith, and Tom Stankiewicz. McMillen, Kenny Stevens, and Kenny Cantrell won the heats, while Miller set fast time.
Despite having another small field of cars, the Tusco Net Sport Stocks put on one of the most exciting races of the night. Nick Grubbs jumped out front early and proved to be hard to pass. Over the first five laps, it was top qualifier Ron Dague trying to get by on the outside. Dague then slid back to third as Kevin McClintock got by. McClintock tried for a couple of laps before Grubbs thwarted his run and Dague took second back. Moments later, Dague's #75 racecar sputtered badly on the front stretch, blowing an engine and ending his night. McClintock tried a couple of more times to race into the lead but Grubbs held on for his first feature win of the season. The G&H Home Improvement/Valley View Logging #24 was followed by McClintock, Jerry McNealy, Ron Kirkpatrick, and Mike Jones. Grubbs also won the heat.
Todd Miller and Pat Moore started up front in the Integrity Auto Sales/Conrad Insurance Pure Stock 15-lap feature. Moore slid up the track in turn two on the first lap allowing Teddy Oliver and Tad Grove to the inside lane, creating a three wide battle. About halfway down the backstretch, Oliver started going up the track not allowing enough room for two cars on his outside lane. The three cars made contact sending the Oliver and Moore rides slamming into the turn three wall for one of the hardest crashes of the season. Both cars were terribly damaged, while the drivers were physically okay. After the restart, Grove easily took the lead and went on to claim the decisive victory. However, in post race, the win was taken away when he refused the engine claim after winning four features. Larry Smith received the feature victory, his first of the season. Following him in the rundown were Brian Minard, Bob Passwaters, Jr., Shawn Kaufman, and Todd Miller. Teddy Oliver was credited with a heat win as was Tim Lynn.
The Parkway Auto Group Compact fast feature had polesitter Don Rufener, Jr. setting the early pace. Johnny Campbell and John McNutt followed closely throughout the 20-laps but Rufener never slipped up and went on to claim another feature victory. Campbell, McNutt, Kyle Rector, and Russell Grandison finished off the top five. Others in the top ten were Jay Hunt, Mike Gribble, Rich Dunlap, Brad Henry, and Rich Hess.
Tammy Rufener came from the back of the field after a lap four mishap to win convincingly in the second Compact feature. The win gave the Rufener racing team a clean sweep of the night's Compact features. The Uhrichsville, Ohio driver was followed by Bryce Allensworth, Don Rufener, III, Larry Ennis, and Taylor Moore. Other top ten finishers were Dan Konovsek, Jill Harshey, Richard Duvall, Jim Poole, and Mark Bates.
Johnny Campbell, Derek Grewell, Don Rufener, III, and Paul Stull won the heats. Rich Dunlap set fast time in Kelly McNutt's ride.
Brad Henry, driving Lennie Orr's Figure 8 car, won decisively in the 8 lap feature. Henry was followed by Jason Grewell, Derek Grewell, Kyle Grewell, and Dan Konovsek.
The 2009-season championships will be held this coming Saturday night, September 12. All five divisions will be there racing for double points on the final night of the championship chase. The Richmond NASCAR race will be viewable on the big screen located behind the flag stand. Spectator Drags will be held at intermission.
Pit gates will open at 2:00, hotlaps at 3:00, qualifying will be at 4:45, and racing will take the green at 6:30. Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors 62+, $6 for kids 6-15, and children five and under are free. Pit passes are $20 for members and $25 for non-members.
