Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2026 Race Season |
 | August 29, 2009 |
Absolutely beautiful weather greeted Midvale Speedway's largest crowd in 2009 this past Saturday, August 29. Fans came out in numbers ready to see the final School Bus Figure 8 race of 2009 as well as the Legends, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Compacts.
In the much anticipated School Bus Figure 8 race, Derek Grewell and Jan McInturf started on the front row. By the first turn, Grewell's bus went into a slow motion rollover with the assistance of Johnny Campbell. After a few minutes, Grewell's bus was put back on its wheels, Grewell fired it up, and brought the field in for a complete restart. Grewell, ironically, was driving the bus that had been rolled twice last season by Ryan Tedesco. When the green waved again, McInturf raced into the lead with Joe Fewkes and Teddy Oliver moving into second and third. Oliver had a huge fan club on this night, as the Canton South band was there to play some songs and watch Oliver run the old Band Bus. Oliver's night came to a short end though, as he made contact with Joe Fewkes and lost power around halfway. That, for all intents and purposes, left it a two bus race with McInturf and Fewkes running closely while Grewell was a lap off the pace. To the finish, things were close at the intersection on a number of occasions. On the final lap, McInturf caught Grewell to put him a third lap down. Grewell made some contact knocking the wheel of McInturf's bus off. Fewkes bounced high in the air off of his fellow competitors tire but was able to recover to pull alongside. Coming to the checkered, Fewkes was able to edge McInturf to become the first repeat winner of a school bus race at Midvale Speedway. Grewell finished third, while Oliver and Campbell were fourth and fifth. Don Rufener, Jr. had mechanical problems before the start and retired early.
The Northern Ohio Legends made their final appearance of 2009 an exciting one. Randy Burns and Larry Young started on the front row for the 20-lap main. Burns, a veteran of Midvale Speedway, took the point early with Young following closely. On the move was Jason Knox. The first heat race winner started in the fifth position and was methodically working toward the front. Knox moved up to third and started applying pressure to Young in the five car breakaway at the front. Young waited until the final lap, drove to the highlane, pulled alongside Burns, but came up short at the finish. Burns claimed the victory while Young, Knox, Dennis Knox, and Evan Finley finished off the top five. Jason Knox and Dennis Knox were heat winners.
The Tusco Net Sport Stock division had Kevin Locker and Ron Dague starting up front for the 20-lap grind. Dague, via the outside lane, shot into the top spot, while the top qualifier Kevin McClintock worked on Locker for second. Eventually, McClintock was able to take the runner-up spot but never got the caution he needed to close the gap on Dague. For Dague, it was his third win of the night, as the Tolloti Pipe/Barnhill Storage #75 also claimed the King Of The Hill and heat race events. McClintock, Locker, Ron Kirkpatrick, and Blake Bitticker finished off the top five.
Todd Miller struggled in qualifying but it turned out to be a perfect time which placed him on the pole of the Integrity Auto/Conrad Insurance Pure Stock feature. Miller raced out front on the drop of the green to lead Brian Minard during the early laps. Minard made some contact with six laps complete that placed him at the back. Joe Oliver, driving Teddy's car, became the runner-up at that point and started pressuring the point leader. Oliver had a couple of solid attempts fall just short and Miller picked up the feature victory. The Mr. Trailer Sales/Wilkin Body Shop #77 was followed by Oliver, Larry Smith, Pat Moore, and Shawn Kaufman in the top five. Tad Grove won the King Of The Hill as well as the heat. He also set fast time with a new track record.
Tammy Rufener started on the pole of the Parkway Auto Group Compact fast feature. Rufener held her car on the bottom throughout, making things tough on her fellow competitors. Wes Ennis tried for a while to make a move, while Kelly McNutt took over second on lap seven. McNutt ran well to the finish, but not well enough to challenge Rufener who picked up her second fast feature win of '09. The Performance Graphix/Tusc Tire & Auto Repair #7 was followed by McNutt, Don Rufener, Jr., Derek Grewell, and John McNutt.
In the second Compact feature, the front was not the place to be. Perk Pyle, Jr. led for just one lap. Tim Frederick then set the pace for the next several circuits before being overtaken by Cliff Cox. Cox held the lead for most of the final ten laps but was flirting with danger on the timing device. Cox, who was just a little off in qualifying broke out once with about five to go. He then stayed close for the next few laps before Russell Grandison pressured him from behind and forced him under again with one to go. Coming to the checkered, Cox was given the black flag, and Grandison became the winner. Tim Westerfield, Jr., Jake Albright, Frederick, and Larry Ennis picked up top five's.
Compact preliminary events were claimed by Don Rufener, Jr., Tammy Rufener, Tim Frederick, and Jason Anthony. Jay Hunt set fast time with a new track record.
The action continues this coming Saturday, September 5 with a five division program. The Late Models will be back in action as Mike Miller and Bubba Smith try to win the championship in their tight battle at the top. Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, Compacts, and Figure 8's will all be in action. Drivers will choose their lanes during heat race action.
Pit gates open at 2:00, hotlaps start at 3:00, qualifying will be at 4:45, and racing will begin at 6:30. Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors 62+, $6 for kids 6-15, and children five and under are free. Pit admission is $20 for members and $25 for non-members.
