Riddle Takes Career First At Midvale
August 15, 2009
A late arriving crowd witnessed an exciting night of racing on a steamy Saturday at Midvale Speedway. With the temperature in upwards of 90, track conditions were a little slow during hotlaps and qualifying. Everything got back up to speed by race time for the Late Models, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Compacts.

In the McIntosh Oil Company Late Model division 25-lapper, George Riddle and Bob Eichel started on the front row. Riddle, driving in his first full season of Late Model racing, jumped into the early lead as the rest of the field was locked in a side-by-side battle. During the race, just a couple of cautions slowed the pace and that made things look like a traffic jam for the complete event. For a while, the inside lane would move up. Then the inside lane would make some headway. Basically a stalemate for 25-laps, this proved to be great news for Riddle, who was not making any mistakes out front. With just a few laps to go, Mark Willison, one of this year's point contenders, took the second spot from Bob Schneider, Jr. and started to challenge Riddle in the outside lane. With one to go, Riddle was just inches ahead at the line. Coming to the checkered, Riddle stepped it up just a notch to hold off Willison, who gave it a valiant effort on the highside. The realdealmotorcars.com/Riddle Trucking #0 was followed by Willison, Schneider, Greg Beule, and Ryan Tedesco. Bubba Smith, Bob Eichel, Todd Ripley, Blake Mackey, and Tom Stankiewicz finished in the top ten. 19 cars started and most made it to the finish. Mike Miller, Stankiewicz, and Dave McAlicker won the heats, while Ripley set fast time.

In the improving field of Tusco Net Sport Stocks, Ron Kirkpatrick and Jerry McNealy brought the field to green. On the opening start, McNealy slid just a little high coming out of four and Nick Grubbs tried to make it three wide on the front stretch for the lead. Contact ensued collecting about half the field. Unable to continue were Grubbs and Chris Miller. With the green back out, Kirkpatrick was able to lead lap one. Top Qualifier Kevin McClintock was already on his way to the front from his sixth starting spot. McClintock shot by Kirpatrick on lap two and set sail, while Ron Dague moved into second and Randy Smart took third. Dague would challenge momentarily, but his badly damaged racer started showing signs of slowing. Smart moved into second with nine laps in. Coming down to the checkered, Smart had closed on McClintock, but the current point leader was able to extend on his advantage by picking up another feature win. Following the Federated Auto Parts/Zoar Air Design #38 of McClintock were Smart, Dague, Kirkpatrick, and Bill Burkholder. McNealy, Josh Truxall, Blake Bitticker, Kevin Locker, and Grubbs were top ten finishers. Grubbs and Locker won the heats.

Despite a small field, the Integrity Auto/Conrad Insurance Pure Stocks put together an exciting feature. Brian Minard, the polesitter, took command early. Point leader Todd Miller was moving up in the outside lane and became the pace setter on lap four. Behind him, Teddy Oliver was mounting some pressure. Oliver got a good run off of turn two on lap nine and made incidental contact with Miller, resulting in a spin. Oliver dropped to the tail to try it again. It only took the Canton, Ohio driver a few laps to get back into second, but Miller had a nice cushion already built up. Coming to the checkered, it was Miller claiming his third win of the season in his Todd Miller Excavating/Tolloti Plastic Pipe #77. Oliver, Pat Moore, Bob Passwaters, Sr., and Minard were top five finishers. Oliver won the heat and set fast time.

In the Parkway Auto Group Compact fast feature, Wes Ennis started on the pole and was looking for his first career feature. The rookie competitor left Kelly McNutt on the start to pull into the lead. Moments later, Rich Hess was able to take second from McNutt. The car on the move was one driven by Kyle Rector. Rector became the runner up on lap ten and set his sights on Ennis. With three to go, Rector was able to make the outside lane work and moved out front to claim the victory. Following the John W Cookson/Gross Welders #22 were Ennis, McNutt, Jesse Page, and Jay Hunt. Don Rufener, Jr., John McNutt, Johnny Campbell, Derek Grewell, and Rich Dunlap finished off the top ten.

Bryce Allensworth led the first couple of laps in the second Compact feature before he broke out of his qualifying time. That handed the lead to Don Rufener, III. Rufener led as a number of drivers swapped spots behind him. A scary moment for the leader took place on lap eleven, as Tim Westerfield made slight contact with Rufener on the exit of turn four. Rufener's car spun out of harm's way and the caution flag gave him his spot back. Rufener then fended off a challenge from Jake Albright over the final four circuits to take his third feature win of the year. Rufener and Albright were followed by Russell Grandison, Tammy Rufener, and Jeffrey Orr. Others in the top ten were Jason Anthony, Taylor Moore, Westerfield, Danny Westfall, and Allensworth.

First time racer Joe Morris led the first couple of laps in the final Compact feature before Dan Konovsek overtook him. Tim Frederick, who arrived at the speedway late, started at the tail and was challenging Konovsek on lap four. Frederick went to the outside lane and the drivers raced that way until the end. On the final lap, Frederick pulled ahead just far enough to claim his second feature victory of the season. Konovsek, Howard Bartholow, Perk Pyle, Jr., and Ashlee Page were top five finishers. Richard Duvall, Joe Morris, Blaine Salsbury, Chris Bloom, and Bruce Gibson completed the top ten.

Jay Hunt, Tim Westerfield, Don Rufener, III, and Dan Konovsek were heat winners. Brad Henry set fast time.

Norm Boss won the spectator drag event in his 1985 Porsche 911.

Racing will continue this coming Saturday, August 22 with five divisions of action. Late Models, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Compacts will be joined by the exciting Figure 8 division. Pits will open at 2:00, hotlaps at 3:00, qualifying at 4:45, and racing will start at 6:30.
