Wild Night Keeps Everyone On Edge
Mid-Season Champs Crowned
June 27, 2009

Wild Night Keeps Everyone On Edge
Mid-Season Champs Crowned
Fans got their monies worth this past Saturday, June 27 at Midvale Speedway. From start to finish, racing was closely contested and way on the wild side. It started with an upside down Late Model in the dash race and ended with a twelve car demolition derby style Figure 8 between two feuding families.

The McIntosh Oil Company Late Model division put on another good show for fans with and 18-car starting field. Bob Schneider, Jr., still looking for that elusive first feature win, controlled the pace early. On lap eight, Rich Marcum, who returned to racing for the first time since early in the season, showed no signs of any problems after bicep surgery and took the lead. Marcum made things look easy and went on to claim his second straight Mid-Season Championship trophy. The Crossroad's Pizza/Norcia's Bakery #27 was followed by Mark Willison, Greg Beule, Schneider, and Mike Miller. Ernie Shook, Bubba Smith, Jonathan Reitter, Rich Dessecker, and George Riddle. The night started with a dash race flip by Bubba Smith. Carefully, the track crew rolled the car back over gently. Smith and crew worked before intermission to ready it for the feature race and the car ran pretty well in the 25-lap event. John Sluka won the dash, while Schneider and Dessecker won the heats. Smith was the fast qualifier.

The Tusco Net Sport Stock 20-lapper had Chris Miller jumping out to an early lead. Behind him, Kevin Locker and Ron Dague were making some bold moves in their attempt to get to the front. Just after the field completed lap one, point leader Kevin McClintock exploded a motor entering the first turn. As he slid in his own fluid, Ron Kirkpatrick followed him all the way to the wall slamming McClintock's car even harder against the barrier. Both were done for the event. After a long delay to work on track conditions, Locker started building up a sizable lead. Dague's chances for victory were dashed when he spun coming off of the still somewhat slick turn two. On lap eleven, Randy Smart moved into second after passing Bill Aubihl. Slowly but surely, Smart was closing on Locker. With two to go, Smart made the all important pass and cruised to victory. The Union Hospital Pain Center/Wayne Dalton #17 picked up additional bonuses from McBride's Auto and KRC Racecars for a sizable payday. Locker, Aubihl, Dague, and Miller completed the top five finishers. Smart won the dash, Aubihl the heat, and Dague was top qualifier.

Keith Anderson set the early pace in the Integrity Auto/Conrad Insurance Pure Stock feature. Fast qualifier, Teddy Oliver, looking for win number three this season was on the move behind him. Oliver started ninth but was up to third by lap nine. At halfway, the veteran driver took second from Pat Moore. On lap later, Oliver's work paid off as the Canton, Ohio driver became the new leader. The C&M Auto Sales/All For You Auto Sales #49 was followed to a victory by Anderson, Todd Miller, Phil Bunton, Jr., and Ronald Bunton. The other top ten finishers were Brian Minard, Moore, Bob Passwaters, Jr., Bob Passwaters, Sr., and Adam Stewart. Minard took the dash, while Anderson won the heat.

In the Parkway Auto Group Compact fast feature, six time feature winner Derek Grewell jumped out to the early lead. Grewell, not thinking his car was capable of breaking out of his earlier qualifying time, went all out as he stretched his lead. His assessment of his car's abilities was a bit off, as he did break out and was black flagged on lap seven. The lead was now in the hands of Rich Hess. Hess looked destined for a big win, but Kyle Rector put his car in the outside lane and started his trek forward. With the white flag waving, Rector moved by and raced to the Mid-Season victory. The Outlaw Tire/John W Cookson #22 came from the ninth starting position for the exciting victory. Following the New Philadelphia, Ohio competitor were Hess, Joe Konovsek, Johnny Campbell, and Rich Dunlap. The rest of the top ten were Brad Henry, Kelly McNutt, Don Rufener, Jr., Jesse Page, and Tammy Rufener.

Billy Nicholas and Don Rufener, Jr. were up front early in the second Parkway Auto Group Compact feature. However, on a restart, the drivers were playing games with one another on the backstretch as Rufener was bumping and Nicholas was brake checking. The track's flagmen sent both pitside and restarted the race. Eventually, Sherrodsville, Ohio driver Tim Frederick came away victorious. The yearly campaigner picked up his first career Compact feature win, despite a number of heat victories. Paul Stull returned to action finishing second, while Howard Bartholow, Taylor Moore, and Ashlee Page finished off the top five. Others in the top ten were Pat Carnes, Richard Duvall, Dan Konovsek, Perk Pyle, Jr., and Neil Rolli.

Kyle Rector won the Compact dash, while Kelly McNutt, Tammy Rufener, and Larry Ennis won the heats. Rich Dunlap set a new track record of 17.88 in qualifying.

The Figure 8 feature was extremely wild and fans knew it would be when twelve cars pulled onto the track to compete. Lennie Orr led most of the way but the main story was between the feuding Grewell and Morgan race teams. Back and forth over the first four laps, the Morgans and Grewells tore their cars up while trying to eliminate one another. After a Grewell and Morgan collision at the intersection, caution was thrown, tempers flared, and the track sent a few drivers pitside. Back to green, several close calls at the intersection kept fans on the edge of their seats. Eventually, Orr claimed the victory, while Isaac Ferrebee, Tim Frederick, Derek Grewell, and Joe Konovsek rounded out the top five.

The Main Event Racing Series now prepares for its second 2009 appearance at the Midvale OH Speedway on Friday, July 3, with a July 4 rain date. Over the last two exciting Super Late events at the track, the winners have come from tenth and eighth place starts respectively. Another barnburner is expected Friday night. Pure Stocks, Compacts, and a special Quarter Midget race with some familiar faces is also on the schedule.

Pit gates will open at 2:30, grandstands at 4:00, hotlaps for the Main Event cars will be from 4:30-5:00 and 5:30-6:00, while the Midvale divisions will practice from 4:00-4:30 and 5:00-5:30. Qualifying will be at 6:00, and racing for the regular classes will begin at 8:00. Pit admission is $25 for Midvale members and $30 for all others. Compact and Pure Stock drivers competing on July 3 will receive $5 off the listed admission. Grandstand admission is $15 for adults and seniors, $8 for kids 6-15, and children five and under are free.

An extra practice session is set for Thursday night, July 2 from 4:00-8:00. Pit admission will be $10 per person, while watching from the grandstands is free.
