Saturday Racing Complete

Saturday Racing Complete
Wednesday Racing At Starts 8
For the seventh time in eight tries, Midvale Speedway drivers were able to complete a night of racing in 2009. For the track it is such a blessing, as in 2008 the speedway didn't complete its seventh event until July 4, due to unfavorable weather. Late Models, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, all were racing plus a radio personality event at intermission.

The McIntosh Oil Company Late Models had another stellar field on hand, topping out at 19. 17 cars started the feature, as Doug McMillen was involved in a heat race crash and Emerson Huffman experienced engine trouble in practice. Bryant Smith and Mike Miller were the benefactors of a small dice roll after qualifying and started on the front row. On the original green, Smith, while trying to stay along Miller going into three, spun the car resulting in a complete restart. The second time went without a hitch, as Miller raced into the lead via the outside lane. Smith settled comfortably into the second spot. On lap two, Ernie Shook, the night's second fast qualifier looped it coming off of four. Ryan Tedesco, driving the Todd Ripley ride, got on the binders hard saving his car, but Darrel Dexter tried to go low and slammed into the ride resulting in heavy damage. The race ran rather quietly to the checkered with Mike Miller claiming his second win of 2009 in his A-1 Auto & Spring/Bob's Auto Sales #53. Smith, Mark Willison, Tedesco, and Greg Beule were top five finishers. Others in the top ten were Bubba Smith, Tom Garbrandt, Bob Sibila, Jr., Bob Schneider, Jr., and George Riddle. Beule, Garbrandt, and Duane Dunn were the heat winners, while Tedesco set a new track record with a 14.30.

Kevin Locker and Randy Smart brought a small field of Tusco Net Sport Stocks to the green. Smart quickly moved out front to set the early pace. Ron Dague, who had won 5 of 6 features coming in, took second on lap number two and started to track down Smart. On lap nine, Dague got a run on Smart coming out of four. Entering turn one, the two made contact, Smart spun, as the duo continued to make contact going up the track. Dague was sent pitside for what officials termed "overly aggressive driving". The two also had issues in the earlier heat race and numerous times this season and last. To the checkered, Smart claimed his first victory in 2009 followed by Kevin Locker and Kevin McClintock. Kevin Locker won the heat.

The Integrity Auto Sales/Conrad Insurance Pure Stock 20-lap feature had Teddy Oliver, Jr. and Brett Lalonde starting up front. Oliver, racing the first feature of his career, moved out front with Chris Smith taking second in the V-6. Smith led for just one pace before Lee McCreery raced by. McCreery started deep in the field but worked quickly to the front to lead laps four to nine. The night's top qualifier Tad Grove again had his car blistering the track. At the halfway mark, Grove shot by McCreery to take the lead away. Coming to the finish, the J.D. Byrider/Greg's Recovery #3 was followed by McCreery, Todd Miller, Brian Minard, and Ronald Bunton. Bob Passwaters, Sr., Bob Passwaters, Jr., Chris Smith, Oliver, Jr., and Lalonde finished off the top ten. Grove and Pat Moore were heat winners. Grove also set fast time.

Rich Hess set the early pace in the Parkway Auto Group Compact fast feature after moving ahead of front row co-starter Wes Ennis. Hess led comfortably for the first four laps, but Kyle Grove was on the move. The youngster was able to move into the top spot on lap five and pull away from his competitors. Don Rufener, Jr., the current point leader, took second on lap nine, which turned out to be extremely important in the end. Coming to the white flag, Grove was clocked under his qualifying time for the second lap of the race, resulting in a speeding ticket. That gave the lead and win to Rufener, his second of the season. Rich Dunlap finished second, while Rich Hess, Tammy Rufener, and John McNutt completed the top five. Other top ten finishers were Johnny Campbell, Kelly McNutt, Max McCartney, Kyle Rector, and Tim Westerfield, Jr.

Tim Frederick led the first ten laps of the Compact second feature. Derek Grewell, who had already won four features this season, assumed the lead on lap eleven, while Tom Barrett moved into second. At the checkered, Grewell was followed by Barrett, Tim Westerfield, Tim Frederick, and Jay Hunt. Brad Henry, Jason Anthony, Chris Bloom, Neil Rolli, and Billy Nicholas were top ten finishers.

The final Compact feature had Todd Walker out front until he went under his qualifying time. After given the black flag on lap three, Kyle Lawson inherited the lead. The Minerva, Ohio driver led the rest of the way to claim the win. Kenny Jewell, Taylor Moore, Howard Bartholow, and Pat Carnes were top five finishers.

At intermission of the evening program, area radio personalities competed in a special race. Driving Compact division racecars were Brad Shupe from 99.9 WTUZ, Bill Morgan from 1450 WJER, Steve Kelly from Sunny 95 in Columbus and formerly of WJER, and Adam Mackey from 1540 WBTC and 95.9 WNPQ. Before the event, the night's announcer Blake Mackey came to the track to introduce the cars. Mackey decided that his brother, Adam, had an unfair advantage due to previous racing experience. Therefore, he started him one lap down in a ten lap race. With the green waving, Mackey quickly worked around Kelly and Morgan to get out front. As the three raced with each other, Mackey was trying to get back around to make passes against his lead lap competitors. He first caught Kelly for third, just past the halfway mark. By lap seven, he had run down Morgan for second and made the pass in the outside lane, setting his sights on Shupe. Moments later, he was out front to the ire of flagman Terry Colletti who showed the black flag, in fact, throwing it onto the speedway at the #157 car. At the finish, it was Mackey, Shupe, Morgan, and Kelly completing the ten lap event.

Coming up Wednesday, June 3, Midvale Speedway will hold its fan appreciation night, with $5 grandstand admission. Midgets, Pure Stocks, Compacts, Figure 8's, and Powder Puff racing will be held. Heats, Pursuits, and Features will be run. Pit gates open at 5, qualifying is at 6:30, and racing will begin at 8.

Competing in the Midget race will be Mario Diano, Ryan Tedesco, Kevin Herron, Ron McBride, Brian Stamm, Brian Swinderman, and Nate Stokey, plus one other to be announced. The cars are just slightly bigger than quarter midgets and will fly around one circle of the Figure 8 track.
