Ohio's Fun Place to Race!!

 Smith's Auto Sales presented night #5 for a five division show at Midvale Speedway. The May 9 event allowed drivers to pick the inside or outside lane in their heats and they went on to the features putting on exciting and clean shows.
The McIntosh Oil Company Late Model 25-lapper was one of the more exciting ones of the season. To be honest, the division has only had one bad show this season out of the five that have been run. Bob Eichel and Doug McMillen brought the sixteen car field to green and McMillen raced into the lead via the outside lane. Fellow Late Model veteran Tom Garbrandt moved into the second spot moments later and the duo pulled from the rest of the field. Behind them, Ernie Shook was working to get around Eichel for third. For about five laps, Shook worked the outside lane to no avail, eventually falling deep into the field. Scott Baker, driving the Todd Ripley ride, was able to get around Eichel as Bryant Smith followed. The race's only caution waved on lap sixteen for Jonathan Reitter's ride that was stopped in the pit exit. At that point, Shook's car came on strong and for the last nine laps the Wadsworth, Ohio driver proved to be a tough challenge for the front of the field. Shook went to the outside lane and worked methodically past most of the top five. On lap twenty-two, Shook was the race's runner-up and started to challenge McMillen. However, McMillen was unflappable and held on for victory. The Parkway Honda/Lee's Famous Recipe Chicken #54 was followed by Shook, Garbrandt, Baker, and Mike Miller. The rest of the top ten were Smith, Mark Willison, Bubba Smith, Greg Beule, and Rich Dessecker. Shook, Beule, and Kenny Stevens were the heat winners, while Willison set fast time.
Chris Miller and Kevin Locker battled up front early in the Tusco Net Sport Stock 20-lapper. Locked in their side-by-side race, Kevin McClintock caught them and chose the inside lane. Ron Dague pulled alongside him in the outside groove. Locker made his pass of Miller work and that helped Dague move around McClintock and, moments later, into the lead. Randy Smart raced into second, while McClintock eventually took third. Smart followed Dague closely but could never mount a serious challenge. Following the New Philadelphia, Ohio driver across the stripe were Smart, McClintock, Locker, and Miller. Dague also won the heat, while Smart set fast time.
The Integrity Auto Sales/Conrad Insurance Pure Stocks put on one of their cleanest races in recent memory as only a couple of single car spins slowed the pace. Brian Minard and Todd Miller started up front with Minard looking for his first career feature win taking the lead. Teddy Oliver, the night's fastest qualifier, immediately started to battle on the outside of Miller and Minard. For a while, Oliver pulled up alongside Minard, but later fell back into the grasps of Miller again. It was a good battle to watch and one that Minard ended up winning. The Canton, Ohio driver claimed career victory #1, while Miller, Oliver, Phil Bunton, Jr., and Ronald Bunton completed the top five behind the Deals On Wheels/Stewart's Flooring #51. Other top ten finishers were Bob Passwaters, Jr., Bob Passwaters, Sr., Tory Gibbs, Tad Grove, and Luther Chambers. Grove and Passwaters, Jr. were the heat winners.
The fast Parkway Auto Group Compact feature had Derek Grewell on the pole looking for his third win of the season. Thanks to the drivers behind him locked in a furious battle, Grewell pulled away and made it look easy. The Hess Motorsports "Lightning McMean" lookalike car crossed the stripe victorious ahead of Tammy Rufener, Rich Hess, Tim Westerfield, Jr., and Kyle Rector. Other drivers following the Dover, Ohio wheelman were Johnny Campbell, Kelly McNutt, John McNutt, Jesse Page, and Jay Hunt.
Neil Rolli led early in the second Compact feature but was overtaken by Tom Barrett on lap six. Barrett, who started tenth, took little time in working to the front. Barrett pulled from the field, while Isaac Ferrebee, Jason Anthony, Russell Grandison, and Larry Ennis completed the top five. Other top ten finishers behind the East High Arby's/Musick & Myers Heating & Cooling #157 were Don Rufener, III, Joe Konovsek, Tim Frederick, Billy Nicholas, and Justin Renicker.
Richard Duvall led for the first three circuits in the third Compact feature. Kenny Jewell then took over the top spot. He and Paul Stull battled for the remaining laps. On the next to last lap, Jewell was clocked under his breakout time for the second time in the event, therefore, receiving the black flag while coming to the checkered. That gave the win to Pat Carnes, as he had just moved into second a lap or two earlier. The Canton, Ohio driver claimed his second career feature, while Dan Konovsek, Stull, Duvall, and Ryan Kopp finished off the top five. Ashlee Page, Perk Pyle, Todd Walker, Charles Storesina, and Kenny Jewell were in the top ten.
Rich Dunlap, Derek Grewell, Don Rufener, III, Paul Stull, and Kenny Jewell won the heats, while Jay Hunt was fast qualifier.
The Figure 8 feature came with its share of paint trading early. Justin Renicker took the early lead while Jason Morgan raced into second. Morgan and Renicker traded paint for a couple of laps, allowing Derek Grewell to get out front. Grewell went on to claim his second win of the night and his second Figure 8 win of the season. Renicker, Morgan, Joe Konovsek, and Billy Nicholas were the other finishers.
Racing resumes Saturday, May 16 with a four division program plus Spectator Drags. The All-Star race from Lowe's Motor Speedway will be viewable on the big screen located near the flagstand.
Pit gates open at 2, hotlaps at 3, qualifying at 4:45, and racing at 6:30. Grandstand admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors 62+, $6 for kids 6-15, and children five and under are free.
