Smith Claims First Career LM Win
May 2, 2009

Smith Claims First Career LM Win
Mother Nature seems to have turned into a racefan as Midvale Speedway has completed its first four races of 2009. Last season, track officials were forced to cancel most of the early season races due to unfavorable weather. Late Models, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Compacts were there for a solid night of racing action.

In the McIntosh Oil Company Late Model 25-lapper, Kenny Cantrell and Bryant Smith brought the field to green. After a side-by-side race for the lead for a handful of laps, Smith was able to take sole possession of the lead as Cantrell fell to second. Smith took a comfortable lead, while Cantrell fought for second. By the completion of lap nineteen, veteran Todd Ripley had taken second and set his sights on Smith. During the race's only caution on lap twenty-two, Ripley had a fender brace come loose and had to go pitside for repairs. On the restart, Smith entered turn one just a little too hard but was able to steer out of any problem and finish his first career Late Model victory. Following the Smith's Auto Sales/Finish Line Motors #1 were Cantrell, Bubba Smith, Mark Willison, and Tom Garbrandt. Other top ten finishers were Greg Beule, Rich Dessecker, Mike Miller, Darrel Dexter, and Ripley. Bryant Smith and Beule were heat winners, while Willison set fast time with a brand new track record.

Ron Dague might have come out of the night with the worst move and the best move. In the Tusco Net Sport Stock heat race, Dague came out of turn two on the final lap with the lead but the car slowed and everyone blitzed by. The driving veteran told officials he thought the race was over, but the previous restart was with six laps in, not seven. In the feature, Dague started outside of row three. As soon as the green waved, the New Philadelphia, Ohio pilot moved his car into the third groove. By the completion of lap one, Dague had passed everyone but the leader, Chris Miller. One-half lap later, Dague was out front after his bold move was complete. Towards the end, second place competitor Randy Smart started to chase him down, but came up short at the end. Following the Tolloti Pipe/Barnhill Storage #75 were Smart, Kevin McClintock, Kevin Locker, and Chris Miller. Smart won the heat, while Dague set a new track record in qualifying.

Brian Minard and Bob Passwaters, Sr. were up front for the Conrad Insurance/Integrity Auto Pure Stock feature. Minard took the early lead as some of the faster qualifier started working forward. On lap four, Teddy Oliver raced by Minard and into the lead. Oliver, with his car handling great, pulled out to a sizable lead, while battles were ongoing behind him. Eventually, Phil Bunton, Jr. was able to take second with a damaged race car, but Oliver had no challenges. The Oliver's Garage/C&M Auto Sales #49 was followed by Bunton, Todd Miller, Passwaters, and Minard. Other top ten finishers were Keith Anderson, Adam Stewart, Ronald Bunton, Tim Lynn, and Lee McCreery. Minard and Tory Gibbs won the heats, while Anderson set fast time.

The fast Parkway Auto Group Compact feature was another good one. Polesitter Tim Westerfield, Jr. led the first two circuits before Don Rufener, Jr. got under him on lap three. Rufener, last year's point champion, was looking for his first feature win of the season. Westerfield followed him closely the rest of the fifteen lap event, but never got the lead back. Under the checkered, the Auto Zone/Animal Racing #47 was followed by Westerfield, Brad Henry, Jeffrey Orr, and Tammy Rufener. John McNutt, Kelly McNutt, Derek Grewell, Kyle Rector, and Jason Grewell claimed top tens.

The Rufener's celebration didn't stop after the fast feature, as Don, III started on the pole of the second Compact feature. Rufener, the young rookie, moved out front early, while CJ Campbell took second. At halfway, Jim Poole took second from Campbell as he got caught in the second lane. Rufener never faltered and went on to pick up his first career feature victory. The Route 39 Auto Salvage/Tusc Tire & Auto Repair #07 was followed by Poole, Jesse Page, Chris Bloom, and Tim Frederick. The rest of the top ten were Campbell, Pat Moore, Kyle Dunlap, Justin Vanfossen, and Isaac Ferrebee.

Neil Rolli led early in the final Compact feature, but his first feature win wasn't meant to be as he was clocked under his qualifying time twice during the event. With the black flag in the air, Kenny Jewell took over the race lead. At that point, Jewell was way out front and put his car in cruise control to claim the win. The Canton, Ohio competitor was chased across the line by Chasity Bunton, Pat Carnes, Paul Stull, and Dale Lawson. Ryan Kopp, Perk Pyle, Todd Walker, Ashlee Page, and Gary Housler claimed top tens.

Racing will continue this coming Saturday, May 9 with the Drivers Choose Their Lane Night. In the heat races, drivers will be lined up single file and be allowed, one-by-one, to choose the inside or outside lane for each start/restart. The concession stand will have dollar dogs/dollar pops throughout the evening. Figure 8's will join Late Models, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Compacts.

Area boy and girl scouts will be allowed to view the races for free if they contact the track in advance to get the tickets. Several groups already have. The NASCAR race from Darlington will be on the big screen located near the flagstand.

Pit gates open at 2, hotlaps at 3, qualifying at 4:30, and racing will begin at 6:30. Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, $6 for kids 6-15, and children 5 and under are free. Pit bands are $20 for members and $25 for non-members.
