Miller Gets Back In The LM Win Column
April 25, 2009

Miller Gets Back In The LM Win Column
MIDVALE, OH - For the first time in recent memory, the track has been able to complete the first few weeks of a racing season, due to great weather. Five divisions of drivers combined for week #3 of 2009 at Midvale Speedway.

Racing in the McIntosh Oil Company Late Model division had been outstanding for the first two nights, as good car counts and clean racing were the strong points. One year ago, the class had problems completing features due to numerous cautions, and for at least this night, bad memories resurfaced. After completing the first three laps, the first of many crashes occurred on the backstretch. As rookie Blake Mackey was completing a pass of Mark Willison and Doug McMillen, contact ensued between Ron Jaberg, Jr., Willison, and McMillen resulting in McMillen's car spinning sideways clipping the right rear of Mackey's ride sending it hard into the back straightaway wall. Mackey and McMillen retired from the event, while Jaberg and Willison were able to continue. With the green back out, polesitter Kenny Cantrell continued to hold the top point, as numerous caution flags were displayed for less than impressive driving. Defending champion Mike Miller took second from Tom Garbrandt on lap thirteen and started to challenge immediately. In fact, at one point Miller took sole possession of the lead only to have it ripped away by another caution. With five laps to go, Miller finally made his #53 ride stick in the high lane and shot into the lead for a second time. The Clinton, Ohio driver was able to hold of Garbrandt down the stretch to pick up the victory in his Wengerd Enterprises/A-1 Auto & Spring ride. Garbrandt, Cantrell, Bubba Smith, and Darrel Dexter completed the top five. Other top ten finishers were Rich Dessecker, Bryant Smith, Jonathan Reitter, William Robinson, and Todd Ripley. Dessecker, Jaberg, and Cantrell won the heats, while Bubba Smith blistered the track with fast time. Hopefully, the Late Model racing will return to the style we saw in the first two weeks.

The Tusco Net Sport Stocks had Chris Miller and Kevin Locker in row one for the start. When the green dropped, Ron Dague immediately went high trying to make a three wide pass going into turn one. A spin in the first turn by Jerry McNealy deleted the effort and the cars were realigned with Dague on the inside of row #2. This time, the veteran driver ducked to the lowside of Miller and McNealy to make a three-wide pass for the lead work. Despite building up a large lead, Randy Smart was able to reel Dague in as the laps wore down. His run would prove to come up short but it made things interesting over the final circuits. Following the Daggie's Auto Service/Todd Miller Excavating #75 were Smart, Kevin McClintock, McNealy, and Chris Miller. Dague also won the heat with Smart setting fast time.

Teddy Oliver started on the outside of row #1 and led early in the Integrity Auto Sales/Conrad Insurance Pure Stock 20-lap feature. In fact, Oliver had a lead built that looked insurmountable. Lap eleven would be his last lap out front, though, as he was clocked under his qualifying time by a matter of 15 hundredths of a second. With the Oliver speeding ticket, the ever improving Ronald Bunton took the top spot. His lead lasted until four to go, when division frontrunner Todd Miller raced by. Miller went on to pick up his second feature win in-a-row, while Bunton, Bob Passwaters, Sr., Phil Bunton, Jr., and Brian Minard finished off the top five. Tory Gibbs won the fast heat, seconds before exploding his motor, while Oliver claimed heat #2. Miller set fast time.

The Parkway Auto Group Compact fast feature was another good one. Mr. Polesitter, Kyle Grove, who by luck of the dice roll has brought the field into green in each of the first three nights, raced out front early on. Third place starter Tammy Rufener, moved past Tim Westerfield, Jr. for second on lap four. At this point, Grove had a solid lead built up. However, Rufener started reeling in the leader immediately. With five laps to go, Rufener set Grove up for an inside lane pass coming off of turn two, dropping him to second. Rufener never faltered and became the first female winner of a fast Compact feature in ten years of the division. The Route 39 Auto Salvage/Tusc Tire & Auto Repair #7 was followed by Grove, Max McCartney, Don Rufener, Jr., and Westerfield. Other top ten finishers were Adam Mishler, Brad Henry, Johnny Campbell, Jay Hunt, and John McNutt.

The middle Compact feature had Joe Konovsek taking the lead from his pole starting spot. Konovsek kept his car in the right direction and went on to claim his second feature win this year. Tim Frederick, Jason Anthony, Jim Poole, and Jesse Page followed him to the line, however Frederick's run was disallowed due to extremely gutted body panels. That handed Larry Ennis a top five, while Jeffrey Orr, Don Rufener, III, Paul Stull, CJ Campbell, and Wes Ennis claimed top tens.

Neil Rolli, after winning a heat, took the early lead in the third Compact feature. On lap eleven, Justin Vanfossen raced by him and settled into the bottom lane. Vanfossen, trying not to go under his qualifying time, was continuing to lead but was holding up some of the frontrunners. After several bumps, Rolli was sent pitside while Vanfossen raced under the checkered for the victory. Following the New Philadelphia, Ohio competitor were Kyle Lawson, Dan Konovsek, Taylor Moore, and Chasity Bunton. Howard Bartholow, Richard Hambleton, Kyle Dunlap, Todd Walker, and Ashlee Page were in the top ten.

The Figure 8 feature turned out a battle between two of the best, Jason Morgan and Don Rufener, Jr. Morgan led the first four laps of the Figure 8 feature before Rufener worked by. Rufener led through lap seven, but on the final circuit the veteran driver had a run in with Justin Renicker at the intersection. Morgan went on to claim the victory, while Derek Grewell, Joe Konovsek, Neil Rolli, and Rufener finished off the top five.

Racing will continue Saturday, May 2 with Autograph Night at intermission. A faster pastor race will also be held for area preachers. Area boy and girl scouts will also be attending the races on behalf of the speedway. Late Models, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Compacts will be in action.

Pit gates open at 2, hotlaps at 3, qualifying at 4:30, and racing at 6:30. Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors 62+, $6 for kids 6-15, and children 5 and under are free. Pit admission is $20 for members and $25 for non-members.
