Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2026 Race Season |
 | April 18, 2009 |
Midvale Speedway added ten more cars to its count from week one with a solid field of 90 for the second race of 2009. Late Models, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Compacts were there to put on great shows, while the fan favorite Spectator Drags were held at intermission.
The McIntosh Oil Company Late Models put on a great race, for the second weekend straight. Coming off of a 2008 season in which the division had a hard time completing green flag laps, the class has had two feature events that were relatively clean and exciting. Doug McMillen and Ron Jaberg, Jr. made up the first row with McMillen going out front to lead the first lap. Blake Mackey, Bryant Smith, and Mike Miller took spots two through four. Behind them, top qualifier Bubba Smith was on the move from his ninth starting spot. Smith, who was in fifth by lap two, moved to the outside lane and passed Miller and his younger brother Bryant by lap nine. By the completion of lap fourteen, Smith ducked low on Mackey exiting turn four to move into the runner-up spot. At that point, the Canton, Ohio driver started to work on McMillen for the lead. With three to go, Smith saw an opening in turn three, drove hard into the turn and made contact with the leader trying to get to the inside. McMillen spun and a disappointed Smith dropped to the tail for the restart. Todd Ripley, last week's winner, was able to get inside of Mackey on the restart to take second but was unable to challenge McMillen for the victory. The New Philadelphia, Ohio driver in his Parkway Honda/Lee's Famous Recipe #54 was followed by Ripley, Miller, Mackey in his first Late Model race, and Mark Willison who has started the season with a pair of top five finishes. Jaberg, Rich Dessecker, Tom Garbrandt, Smith, and Greg Beule completed the top ten. Willison, McMillen, and William Robinson claimed the heat wins.
Only seven cars lined up for the Tusco Net Sport Stock feature, as a couple were eliminated in week one with a big backstretch crash. Those, along with a couple of others, should be joining action in the coming weeks. Despite the low car count, an interesting race was again held. After qualifying, Ron Dague rolled a three and put Kevin McClintock on the pole, Randy Smart in the second spot, and himself in the third place position for the start. With the three fastest cars out front for a complete 20 laps, everyone knew that the racing would be furious, and that it was. McClintock raced out front, while Dague took second on the start. The trio pulled from the other four cars immediately as the battle began. With six laps complete, Dague moved around McClintock to take the lead spot. As the pair crossed the line on lap seven, a caution waved for a Jerry McNealy spin, negating Dague's effort. With the green back out, McClintock picked up the pace a bit, making it tougher for Dague to get a run on the outside. Meanwhile, Smart was challenging Dague for second, with contact being made on a number of occasions. Coming out of turn two on lap twelve, Dague checked up, let Smart go around, and contact was applied to Smart's bumper in turn three. Smart returned to the race with a flat tire, while Dague called it a night. McClintock raced to the checkered flag to pick up his first victory of 2009, while Smart, McNealy, Chris Miller, and Dague completed the top five behind the Federated Auto Parts/Broadrun Cheeseshouse #38. Smart won the heat race.
The Integrity Auto/Conrad Insurance Pure Stocks were actually the first feature cars on the track and started out the night with a good race. Much like the Sport Stocks, the invert was small with only the top four qualifiers being up front. From his outside front row starting spot, Todd Miller raced into the lead and closed the door on polesitter Brian Minard in turn one. Miller's first challenge came from top qualifier Tad Grove on lap three. Grove followed Miler for another three circuits before he tried to get a run in turn four. Hitting the gas much sooner than Miller on the exit, Grove and Miller collided, sending Miller spinning. Miller got his spot back, while Grove restarted from the tail. Miller led comfortably the rest of the race, while Grove had to work hard to return to the top five. The Todd Miller Excavating/Somerdale Inn #77 was followed by Teddy Oliver, Minard, Grove, and Tory Gibbs at the finish, but Oliver's run was disallowed due to low frame height. Joe Oliver came away with a top five, while Bob Passwaters, Sr., Ronald Bunton, Brett Lalonde, Bob Passwaters, Jr., and Bill Burkholder claimed top tens. Miller and Burkholder were heat winners.
In the fast feature for the Parkway Auto Group Compacts, Kyle Grove was the polesitter for the second week straight and moved into the early lead. Problems again arose for the Sophomore driver, though, as smoke poured heavily from his machine and the car was black flagged. Last week's winner, Derek Grewell, inherited the lead and was out front through lap thirteen. With just over two to go, Adam Mishler, coming from seventh in the starting lineup, made a three wide pass on the bottom of John and Kelly McNutt and went to the outside of Tammy Rufener and Grewell to race out front. Mishler, who had just driven the race of his life, had the win taken away for refusing to be teched afterwards. Due to the disqualification, Grewell picked up his second win to start the season, while Rufener, John McNutt, Kelly McNutt, and Jay Hunt picked up top fives. The rest of the fast feature top ten were Johnny Campbell, Brad Henry, Don Rufener, Jr., Rich Hess, and Jeffrey Orr.
Dave Hawkins, Jr. led the first two laps of the Compact second feature before Jason Anthony controlled the pace. Anthony put his car in cruise control as drivers changed positions behind them, slowing their pace. At the checkered, Anthony crossed the line first in his Canton Auto Sales & Salvage/Finish Line Motors #77. Top fives were claimed by Andy Orr, Don Rufener, III in just his second week of racing, Rich Dunlap, and Pat Moore. The other top ten finishers were CJ Campbell, Hawkins, Justin Vanfossen, Tim Frederick, and Billy Nicholas.
Kandi Chambers, racing in her first career Compact feature, battled with Kenny Jewell early in the third Compact race of the night. Eventually, Jewell got the lead, as Chambers broke out of her qualifying time after a great run. Jewell, though, also was handed a speeding ticket on lap fourteen and lost the feature on the final circuit to Felicia Myers. The Barnhill, Ohio competitor was followed by Paul Stull, Neil Rolli, Dan Konovsek, and Howard Bartholow. Perk Pyle, Todd Walker, Ashlee Page, Charles Storesina, and Jewell were in the top ten.
Steven Feister won in the exciting Spectator Drags.
Racing will resume Saturday, April 25, with a five division program. Joining the Late Models, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Compacts will be the Figure 8's. Racecar Bingo will be played by those in attendance and prizes will be given away.
Pit gates open at 2, hotlaps are at 3, qualifying starts at 4:30, and racing will begin at 6:30. Grandstand admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, $6 for kids 6-15, and children 5 and under are free.
