Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2026 Race Season |
 | April 11, 2009 |
Frigid weather conditions greeted fans and drivers for the 2009 Tusco Net Season Opener at Midvale Speedway. Double points were awarded to all teams in competition and the racing was exciting, with a lot of passing, throughout the night.
In the McIntosh Oil Company Late Models, Bob Eichel and Greg Beule brought the field to the green in the 25-lap main. Beule, via the outside lane, darted out front on the opening start. Just as the field was about to complete the first lap cleanly, Dave McAlicker looped it in turn four, creating another restart. On the second try, Beule again dashed into the lead. The newly lettered ride, looking very sharp for the opener, controlled the top spot in the early stages as Tom Garbrandt, Mark Willison, Rich Marcum, and Bryant Smith followed. On lap number nine, caution was raised into the air for leader Greg Beule. With the car running much better than qualifying, Beule broke out of his qualifying time and restarted from the tail. Garbrandt inherited the lead, but the real story was top qualifier Todd Ripley restarting from sixth. As soon as the race was restarted, moved past Mike Miller for fifth. Two laps later, Ripley used the outside lane to start his blitz of the top five. By lap 14, the Gnadenhutten, Ohio driver was on the outside of Garbrandt with a slight advantage. The final caution waved after lap 15, giving Ripley sole possession of the top spot. The final ten laps were error free for the Wood Electric/McIntosh Oil #00, as Ripley claimed win #1 in his new ride. Garbrandt, Willison, Smith, and Marcum completed the top five. Other top ten finishers were Bubba Smith, Miller, Ernie Shook, William Robinson, and McAlicker. Willison and Garbrandt claimed the heat wins. There were a total of 16 Late Models at the track, while more are expected to be ready for week #2.
The night started great for a small field of Tusco Net Sport Stocks, as the top three drivers turned laps within one tenth of one another in qualifying. Kevin McClintock was fastest with a 15.19, while Randy Smart 15.21 and Ron Dague 15.27 were closely behind setting up for a good night of competitive racing. Disaster nearly ended that on lap one of the 20-lap feature event, as polesitter Ron Kirkpatrick and Nick Grubbs got together coming off of turn two. As the cars veered quickly toward the outside wall, Dague had nowhere to go, as well as Kevin Locker and mayhem was present on the backstretch. After a long delay cleaning up the mess, only Grubbs and Kirkpatrick were unable to continue. Dague was able to resume from the pole position, while Smart and McClintock followed. As the laps ticked off, it was clear to see Dague's car was amazingly unhurt from the damage and was going to be on his way to his first win. As the double checkered waved high into the air, the Tolloti Pipe/Barnhill Storage #75 crossed as victor, while Smart, McClintock, Locker, driving the Ravenscroft ride, and Chris Miller completed the top five. Dague also won the heat.
Ronald Bunton and Adam Stewart brought the field to green in the Integrity Auto Sales/Conrad Insurance Pure Stock 20-lapper. Stewart raced into the lead as Phil Bunton, Jr. pursued. Keith Anderson, the night's top qualifier, was already up to third by lap two. On lap four, Anderson raced to the highside of Stewart and into the lead. With the Barnhill, Ohio driver setting sail, Teddy Oliver was on the move from the back of the pack. Oliver, who did not qualify after arriving late, moved into the runner-up spot on lap six. During the long green flag run, Oliver was closing in on the leader. A caution waved with just a couple to go, bunching the field for one final run to the finish. Anderson pulled from Oliver after the restart and looked destined for victory. However, running through turns one and two on the final lap with a several car length lead, Anderson's car let out a puff of smoke as liquid and parts poured from the oil pan and Oliver raced by into the lead. The Canton, Ohio veteran was followed to the stripe by Todd Miller, Brian Minard, Stewart, and Bunton. Bob Passwaters, Sr., Bob Passwaters, Jr., Ronald Bunton, Anderson, and Tory Gibbs also followed the Oliver's Garage/Stewart's Flooring #49 in the final rundown. Minard and Oliver won heats.
In the Parkway Auto Group Compact fast feature, second year racer Kyle Grove and veteran John McNutt made up the front row for the 15-lap grind. When the green dropped, the inside lane moved out front. Grove was followed by Derek Grewell, McNutt, Johnny Campbell, and Tammy Rufener early. Single file formation was the story early, but on lap number ten, Grewell applied a bump to Grove entering turn three. Both drivers checked up and kept their cars going in the right direction. Grove, though, raced over the rumble bumps in turns 3/4 and slowed coming down the frontstretch. As the field raced by, the caution waved for Grove entering turn one ending his chances at career feature win #1. Over the final five circuits, Grewell held off a great challenge from Campbell, one that was coming in the second lane. In fact, Campbell led laps eleven and twelve, only to relinquish it to Grewell once again. At the finish, Grewell, in the Hess Motorsports sponsored Lightning Mc"Mean" car was followed by Campbell, McNutt, Kelly McNutt, and Adam Mishler. The rest of the top ten were Don Rufener, Jr., Tad Grove, Jeffrey Orr, Jay Hunt, and Tim Westerfield, Jr.
Front row starters, Jesse Page and Jason Morgan controlled the top two spots early in the second Compact main. Just past halfway, Morgan got shuffled back in the outside lane and went pitside with problems. Chris Bloom inherited second, while CJ Campbell, Jason Anthony, and Billy Nicholas were in the top five. When the race came to an end, it was Page claiming victory in his Autosportplus.com/Empire Welding #02 followed by the four aforementioned drivers. The rest of the top ten were Wes Ennis, Pat Carnes, Larry Ennis, Don Rufener, III, and Justin Renicker.
Neil Rolli claimed a heat win early in the night, and for the first seven laps of the Compact third feature, he was in control of the top spot. On lap eight, Joe Konovsek took over the top spot. The Canton, Ohio driver, in the Country Boy Motorsports/Quality Pallet #133 was able to beat Rolli, Kyle Lawson, Paul Stull, and Dan Konovsek to the finish. Other top ten finishers were Kenny Jewell, Taylor Moore, Chasity Bunton, Dane Martin, and Todd Walker.
Compact preliminary wins were claimed by John McNutt, Jeffrey Orr, Jesse Page, Justin Vanfossen, and Neil Rolli. The top qualifier was Don Rufener, Jr.
The Figure 8 division ran their first feature of the year on Saturday night and the division will be running bi-weekly again this season. Jason Morgan quickly took the lead from Isaac Ferrebee on the opening start, while Derek Grewell moved into second. The duo ran nose-to-tail as they pulled from the field. On lap six of eight, Grewell moved to the lowside of Morgan, made some contact and took the lead. Morgan retired with some problem, possibly a tire, and Grewell went on to victory to make it two for two on the night. The Dover, Ohio competitor was followed by Don Rufener, Jr., Ferrebee, Gene Morgan, and Kenny Jewell.
All-in-all, it was a great night of racing action. The high points would be the competitive racing including Todd Ripley coming from toward the back in the Late Model feature, and the low point would be a grinding Sport Stock crash that eliminated two cars. Despite that accident and long cleanup time, the fans were on their way home by ten o'clock, something that was a must with the cold conditions.
Racing will continue on Saturday, April 18 with the first edition of the Spectator Drags. The exciting intermission event will be part of the Late Model, Sport Stock, Pure Stock, and Compact program. It will also be Twin State Auto Racing Fan Club night, as their member receive free admission.
Pits open at 2, hotlaps start at 3, qualifying from 4:30-5:45, and racing will begin at 6:30. Grandstand admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors 62+, $6 for kids 6-15, and children five and under are free.
