Season & Point Champs Crowned
September 6, 2008

Season & Point Champs Crowned
This past Saturday, September 6, Midvale Speedway held its 2008 Season Championships presented by Tusco Net. The pits had a strong car count, as drivers raced for double points and the large trophies. Five divisions were in competition.

The 50-lap McIntosh Oil Company Late Model division feature was the night’s headline event. Bryant Smith and Dusty Woodie were the front row starters for the event, due to the dice roll of 15. Smith, despite recurring mechanical woes, raced into the lead and field at bay in the early stages. Rich Marcum ran in the runner-up spot for several laps before Rick Sibila put his ride in the outside lane and picked him off. Not long after, Sibila raced to the highside and shot into the top spot. Sibila pulled away from the field as Smith led a long line of cars. Closing in the race’s halfway mark, weekly division frontrunner Ryan Tedesco and veteran Tom Garbrandt started to make their moves. Tedesco, mired deep in the field for the first 20+ laps, moved high and started to methodically take one spot at a time as did Garbrandt in front of him. In fact, as Garbrandt moved into second, Tedesco took third and started to chase down the leader. Sibila at that point, had a sizable advantage, but Garbrandt was slowly cutting into it. It looked as though Garbrandt was going to be too strong for Tedesco, but after a few laps of racing nose-to-tail, Garbrandt washed up the track coming off of turn two and Tedesco pulled alongside. As the duo raced into turn three side-by-side, contact ensued in a battle for real estate. The two spun which set up a 10-lap shootout for Sibila and Tedesco. Once the green waved, Tedesco tried the outside lane. At first, it Tedesco looked to be strong enough to finish the job, but Sibila had other thoughts. Sibila picked up the pace a little over the final seven circuits to close Tedesco’s opportunity at his fifth win in-a-row. For Sibila, it was his first career Midvale Late Model win. The Mr. Rapid/McIntosh Oil #63 was followed by Tedesco, Mike Miller, Greg Beule, and Garbrandt who rebounded after the spin. John Ambrose, Smith, Kenny Cantrell, Marcum, and Doug McMillen finished off the top ten. Beule, Marcum, and Cantrell won the heats, while McMillen set fast time. Mike Miller claimed another Late Model championship with his consistent 2008 finishes.

In the Tusco Net Sport Stock 20-lapper, Scott Archer and Nick Grubbs started alongside one another to bring the field to green. Archer, laying back, had Grubbs pull into the lead when the green fell. Behind him, Archer settled into the second spot with Randy Smart holding his line in third. Ron Dague, always a threat for victory, spun with several laps complete and had to restart from the tail. From that point on, the action was furious as Dague worked his way through traffic while Grubbs held on to a comfortable lead. With five to go, Dague moved into the second spot and started to challenge the leader. Dague looked high a few times, with Grubbs sliding up the track, making the job even tougher. With 18 laps in, Dague set Grubbs up for an inside lane pass in turn two. By the backstretch, Dague was out front and looked to be on his way to victory. However, a caution moments later for a Ron Kirkpatrick and Chris Boone spin, negated the pass and Dague would have to try again. A two lap shootout was setup with Dague again trying the highlane. Grubbs crossed the stripe ahead of the veteran driver, as the outside lane attempt came up short. The Valley View Logging/McBride’s Auto Care #24 was followed by Dague, Smart, Kevin McClintock, and Archer. Jerry McNealy, Blake Bitticker, Kirkpatrick, Boone, and Blake Mackey finished off the top ten. Grubbs and Archer won the preliminary events, while Dague set fast time by tying his track record. Kevin McClintock claimed his second straight point championship.

Tad Grove set fast time in the Midvale Speedway Pure Stock division, and ultimately rolled a total of “3” on the dice to put himself in the third spot for the feature. With the amazingly small invert, all of the fast cars were lined up at the front to make for an interesting feature. Point leader Tory Gibbs raced out front at the start with Teddy Oliver taking second. The two cars raced nose-to-tail along the bottom, while Grove worked hard in the outside lane. The fast qualifier eventually took second, while Todd Miller moved into third. Gibbs, for the rest of the event, just protected the inside lane and made anyone who tried to get around him go the long way. Eventually, Rich Schweitzer, the point runner-up, moved into second but came up short for the win as Gibbs claimed yet another victory and the point championship. Schweitzer, Grove, Pat Moore, and Miller were top five finishers. The rest of the top ten were Bob Passwaters, Sr., Phil Bunton, Jr., Brian Minard, Ronald Bunton, and Mike Hostetler. Oliver and Phil Bunton, Jr. won the heats.

In the Parkway Suzuki Compact fast feature, Jay Hunt edged Max McCartney on the first lap. However, McCartney then rolled out front from his pole starting position. Don Rufener, Jr., the third place starter, battled with Hunt for second and eventually took the spot. Coming to the finish, McCartney and Rufener battled hard for the season championship victory. Crossing under the checkered, McCartney edged the point champion but the rookie driver would later lose the victory due to a non approved computer. Rufener was given the trophy, while Kelly McNutt, A.J. Diano, Rich Dunlap, and Kyle Grove finished in the top five. Other top ten finishers were Hunt, Cliff Cox, Adam Mishler, Derek Grewell, and John McNutt.

Jeffrey Orr led for 13 laps in the second Compact feature before fellow second year racer Kyle Rector set up a perfected move in turns one and two. Rector entered turn one high to put himself on the extreme bottom coming off of turn two. He pulled alongside and raced out front for an exciting victory. The Autism Speaks For Life/John W. Cookson #22 was followed by Orr, Chris Bloom, Rich Hess, and Tammy Rufener. Jesse Page, Kenny Ford, Chris Smith, Jason Morgan, and James Domer were top ten finishers.

The final Compact feature event had Jason Anthony looking to claim another win. With just a couple to go and a decent sized lead, Anthony looked destined for the victory. However, with one to go, Anthony was clocked under his qualifying time for the second time during the race and had his win go up in smoke. Kenny Jewell, then second, crossed the stripe as the official winner followed by Howard Bartholow, Robert Bunton, Pat Carnes, and Kyle Dunlap. Other top ten finishers were Paul Stull, Tim Frederick, Chris Stitt, Perk Pyle, and Anthony.

Compact heat victories were credited to Derek Grewell, Rich Hess, Jason Anthony, and Pat Carnes. Rufener set fast time.

Derek Grewell led from the beginning in the Midvale Speedway Figure 8 feature. In the 12-car, 12-lap event, several close calls took place at the intersection, but Grewell was able to avoid any damage. Jason Morgan, Don Rufener, Jr., Kenny Jewell, and Gene Morgan had top five runs. The rest of the top ten were Earl Scranton, Mike Belknap, Mickey Green, Larry Ennis, and Joe Slentz. Rufener claimed his second point championship of the night.
