Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2026 Race Season |
 | August 30, 2008 |
Fans came out in large numbers for the second night of thrills at Midvale Speedway this past Saturday, August 30. Headlining the event was the second ever School Bus Figure 8 race at the 3/10-mile speedplant. Legends, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Compacts were all in action.
The main attraction was the School Bus Figure 8 race. Earlier this season, the speedway held its first ever school bus event with Ryan Tedesco claiming the victory. Since then, two more busses were purchased, bringing the total to eight for the 15-lap slugfest. Jan McInturf, the only driver in the field who is not a regular racer, and Tory Gibbs started on the front row. Green in the air, McInturf raced into the lead with McClintock taking second from Gibbs, who was having mechanical problems from the get go. Drivers diced for position, as over the first seven laps, the top five changed each circuit. Tedesco, after becoming the first school bus figure 8 winner back in June, etched his name in the record book with another first as his bus rolled on its side after contact from fellow Late Model driver Bob Eichel. The bus was then rolled back onto its wheels and Tedesco restarted. The win continued to be up for grabs despite McInturf leading throughout. Tedesco’s bus rolled over a second time, and unbelievably was able to continue again. At the end, four busses were able to withstand the carnage, though only one was on the lead lap. Picking up his first career feature victory was Jan McInturf, a local real estate veteran. Eichel, Bubba Smith, Tedesco, and Chris Bloom were the rest of the top five.
In the Parkway Suzuki Compact fast feature, Jake Albright and Adam Mishler were the front row starters. Mishler led the first two laps in the outside lane before Albright edged ahead on the bottom. Mishler would reassume the point on lap eight and hold off a late race charge from Kelly McNutt to pick up his first feature victory of 2008. Following the Ember Complete Care #65 were McNutt, Don Rufener, Jr., Jay Hunt, and Earl Scranton. Other top ten finishers were Kyle Grove, Max McCartney, Chris Bloom, Johnny Campbell, and Albright.
The 20-lap Tusco Net Sport Stock feature had Nick Grubbs and Randy Smart bringing the field to green. Grubbs assumed the early lead, while Smart fell back after some contact with point leader Ron Dague. Shortly thereafter, Dague made a move on Grubbs to move out front. The veteran driver would go on to cross the stripe first under the checkered, however, in post race inspection the tires on the winning car were found to be under the durometer allowance and the win was disallowed. Scott Archer became the feature winner, while Smart, Blake Mackey, Jerry McNealy, and David Breehl were the rest of the top five. Completing the top ten were Ron Kirkpatrick, Keith Anderson, Chris Miller, Kevin McClintock, and Ralph LeMunyon. Grubbs and McNealy won the heats, while McClintock set fast time.
Nineteen Northern Ohio Legend drivers lined up for the 25-lap grind. Bryan Nuckles, making his first Midvale Speedway start, took the early lead from the pole. The race’s only caution turned into a red flag on lap five, as Dale Dodge, Jr. spun on the frontstretch. With traffic closing quickly, Mike MacDonald had no where to go and blasted into the right side of his car. Back to green, Jeff Huber took the lead from Nuckles on lap nine. Huber continued to lead for the next handful of laps before top qualifier Jason Knox took over with ten to go. Knox’s uncle Dennis made a pass for second and followed his nephew to the stripe. Huber was third, while Brandon Huff and Mike Copen completed the top five. Other top ten finishers were Steve Rector, Nuckles, Randy Burns, Billy Richards, and Tom Spisak. Dennis Knox, Jonathan Reitter, and Spisak won the preliminary events.
The Midvale Speedway Pure Stocks had another rough event. Brett Lalonde and Brian Minard, rookie teammates, were the early pacesetters. Moving quickly toward the front was Tad Grove, who was looking to turn his season back around after several weeks of bad mechanical luck. Grove became the leader on lap four while Keith Anderson and Rich Schweitzer moved into second and third. Anderson later spun, shuffling the top five. The race eventually was called early due to the time limit restraint and Tad Grove picked up his third victory of the season. Following the J.D. Byrider/CNAC Financing #3 were Schweitzer, Todd Miller, Tory Gibbs, and Bob Passwaters, Jr. The rest of the top ten were Minard, Bob Passwaters, Sr., Adam Stewart, Lalonde, and Mike Hostetler. Phil Bunton, Jr. and Stewart won the heats, while Gibbs set fast time.
Tom Barrett led the first couple of laps of the Compact second feature before clocking under his qualifying time, handing the lead to second year driver, Kyle Rector. Rector had a big lead built up and cruised to his first feature career feature victory. Rich Hess, Derek Grewell, Tim Westerfield, Sr., and Cliff Cox rounded out the top five. Jason Anthony, Tammy Rufener, Larry Ennis, Chris Smith, and Isaac Ferrebee were top ten finishers.
After a couple of drivers received the black flag for going under their qualifying times, Justin Vanfossen assumed the point and went on to his first career feature win. Following the New Philadelphia, Ohio driver were Howard Bartholow, Bill Wilkin, Chasity Crawford, and Paul Stull. The rest of the top ten were Taylor Moore, Pat Carnes, Joe Slentz, Tim Frederick, and Tyler Schupbach.
Compact preliminary winners were Ron Myers, Rich Hess, Chris Smith, and Billy Nicholas. Max McCartney was credited with setting fast time.
Racing will continue this coming Saturday, September 6 with the running of the 2008 Season Championships. Drivers will be running for double points on the final night of point racing. Late Models, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, Compacts, and Figure 8’s will all be in action. Spectator Drags will be held at intermission and the Late Model feature will be a 50-lapper. Payoff details coming soon.
Pit gates will open at 2:30, hotlaps and grandstands at 3, qualifying at 4:30, and racing at 6:30.
