Classes Top Dawgs Have Solid Midvale Nights
Busses To Return Saturday
As the season winds down, the title chases are starting to narrow and racing action continues to be strong and exciting. For many, Saturday, August 23 was a night for drivers that have had many trips to victory lane, though some first-timers also claimed top runs.

The Tusco Net Sport Stock feature was first on the night’s card. As always, the car count was small in the class, but the racing stellar. In the caution free affair, Jerry McNealy raced out into the early lead. Nick Grubbs took the lead away on lap number two, from his fourth starting position, while Randy Smart took second. Point contenders Kevin McClintock and Ron Dague started to work their ways forward and were in third and fourth by lap five. Dague continued his methodical approach with a pass of McClintock on lap six and a pass of Smart on lap ten. With just six to go, Dague raced to the bottom of Grubbs to take over the lead and cruise to victory. The Tolloty Pipe/Barnhill Storage #75 was followed by Smart, Grubbs, McClintock, and Scott Archer. Other top ten finishers were McNealy, Hank Massaro, Blake Bitticker, Chris Boone, and Joe Fewkes. Grubbs won the dash, while Chris Miller won his first career Sport Stock heat. Dague set fast time.

The fast feature in the Parkway Suzuki Compacts had Kyle Grove and Cliff Cox bringing the field in for the 15-lap event. Grove, looking for his first career feature win after a runner-up finish the week before, was the leader for the first ten circuits. During the race’s midstage, a several car pileup began when Johnny Campbell and Rich Dunlap had a discrepancy. Four drivers were eliminated from action. Cliff Cox, who started on the front row with Grove, moved by the younger competitor on lap eleven. Cox crossed the line first for what looked to be his second feature win of the season, but forfeited the victory by electing to skip tech. That gave the win to Canton, Ohio driver Jay Hunt. Hunt was followed by Kelly McNutt, Grove, Kyle Rector, and Adam Mishler. The rest of the top ten were Tim Westerfield, Jr., Don Rufener, Jr., Jake Albright, Dunlap, and Campbell.

The McIntosh Oil Company Late Models truly had an exciting 25-lap grind, despite a return to their numerous caution flags. The front row starters were Gene Molnar, Jr. and Joel McKnight. The duo side-by-side for fifteen laps, with Molnar leading each of the paces. McKnight edged Molnar on lap sixteen, and moments later a caution waved, lining him up in first. Back to green, McKnight brought the field too quickly into turn three, so the field re-aligned to try it again. On this attempt, McKnight brought the field in at a much better pace, Molnar misjudged, went to the lowland and the two were involved in a turn four mishap. That gave the lead to Rick Sibila, who was close to a feature win a few weeks ago. Sibila led the next three laps before division frontrunner Ryan Tedesco came out of nowhere to take over with five to go. Bubba Smith, who started fifteenth, made a pass of Sibila to take second. Under the checkered, Tedesco picked up his fifth feature win of the season, including his fourth in a row, while Smith, Sibila, John Ambrose, and Bob Schneider, Jr. completed the top five. Other top ten finishers were Doug McMillen, Mike Miller, Tom Garbrandt, Todd Ripley, and Molnar. Ambrose won the dash, while Garbrandt and Bryant Smith the heats.

In the Midvale Speedway Pure Stock feature, team cars Adam Stewart and Brian Minard started up front. Stewart raced into the lead, while one of the other team cars Teddy Oliver closed in. Oliver went on to take over the lead on lap five, while Tad Grove was the new runner-up. Grove went to the outside of Oliver, and after a great, clean side-by-side battle, Grove moved out front. Unfortunately for him, though, Grove was clocked under his qualifying time and sent pitside. Oliver’s retaking of the lead was shortlived as division point leader Tory Gibbs screamed by. Gibbs held on for the final five laps to claim his sixth feature win of the year. Todd Miller had a strong second place showing, while Oliver, Larry Smith, and Pat Moore had top five’s. Bob Passwaters, Sr., Brian Minard, Bob Passwaters, Jr., Mike Hostetler, and Rich Schweitzer, who blew a motor, completed the top ten. Smith won the dash, while Oliver and Grove took the heat wins. Gibbs set fast time.

The Figure 8 feature was a great one with several close calls at the intersection. Larry Ennis and Jason Morgan started up front and raced away from the rest of the field. With Ennis leading and Morgan on his rear bumper, it was a two man race in the 10-lap thriller. The two made just slight contact once or twice, but raced a pretty clean event to the finish. For Ennis, it was his first career feature win, while Morgan, Don Rufener, Jr., Lennie Orr, and Joe Slentz were the top five finishers.

Earl Scranton had a strong run in the second Compact feature for a great win over Derek Grewell, Max McCartney, Jeffrey Orr and John McNutt. Jason Anthony won his second third Compact feature in a row with a victory over Billy Nicholas, Taylor Moore, Dan Konovsek, and Perk Pyle.

Racing will continue this Saturday, August 30, with the School Bus Figure 8 race. Legends, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Compacts will also be in action. So far, Ryan Tedesco, Kevin McClintock, Tory Gibbs, Bob “The Animal” Eichel, Jason Morgan, and Jan McInturf have been announced to run the school busses. At least one or two more will be announced in the coming days.

Pit gates open at 2:30, hotlaps and grandstands at 3:00, qualifying at 4:30, and racing at 6:30. Grandstand admission is $13 for adults, $10 for seniors 62+, $8 for kids 6-15, and children five and under are free. Pit admission remains regular at $20 for members and $25 for non-members.
