2026 Race Season
Good Night Of Racing Complete
August 9, 2008

Good Night Of Racing Complete
After a rough night last week, drivers bounced back with a great night of action on Saturday, August 9 at Midvale Speedway. There was a good mixture of repeat winners and first time victors in the closely contested feature battles.

The first feature race of the night was in the McIntosh Oil Company Late Model division. One week after a marathon of a race with very little passing and a lot of wrecking, the drivers settled down for an action packed affair despite several cautions. A.J. Diano, driving the Jaberg #22 for the first time, and Rich Marcum, looking for his second feature win of the year brought the 19-car field in for the green. Diano, now a weekly driver in the Compact class, re-adjusted quickly to driving a Late Model and shot into the lead at the start. In fact, Diano started building up a sizable advantage before he was clocked under his qualifying time on lap five, bringing out a caution flag. He went to the tail, while Marcum inherited the lead. A two-car lead battle then ensued, as Rick Sibila shot to the outside lane. For several laps, the drivers traded the lead, while Ryan Tedesco was moving up behind them. On a lap seventeen restart, Marcum’s chances for a second career feature win came to an end when he spun in turn one. Sibila inherited the lead, which didn’t last long as Tedesco got by one lap after the restart. Tedesco cruised to the victory, while Sibila finished a strong second. Greg Beule was third, Mark Willison returned for a fourth place finish, and Bubba Smith rounded out the top five. The rest of the top ten were Mike Miller, Bob Schneider, Jr., Diano, Bryant Smith, and Kenny Stevens. Bryant Smith, Diano, and Stevens won the heats, while Bubba Smith set a blistering fast time.

The Tusco Net Sport Stock field was again small on this Saturday night, but arguably put on the best feature race. Jerry McNealy and Rich Dessecker led the field to green in the 20-lap grind with McNealy as the early leader. As Dessecker was caught in the outside lane, Scott Archer and Ron Dague were working quickly forward. Archer took the lead from McNealy on lap four, as Dague moved into second. The next sixteen laps were a blast to watch as Archer had his hands full with point leader Ron Dague. Dague tried high and Dague tried low, but neither was working out as Archer was just quick enough. On a couple of occasions contact was made with Dague backing out allowing Archer to regain his form. The race went caution free and Archer picked up his second feature win of 2008. Following the Arch-a-motive/American Transformer #28 were Dague, Nick Grubbs, Kevin McClintock, and Blake Mackey. Archer also won the heat, while McClintock set fast time.

Pat Moore led the early laps in the Midvale Speedway Pure Stock feature. In fact, Moore led until he was one lap shy of the halfway point when Todd Miller raced out front. Miller, who was leading one week ago before breaking out of his qualifying time, was driving a rocket again. From lap twelve to lap fifteen, Miller held off some challenges from top qualifier and point leader Tory Gibbs. Gibbs, though, had his night end early with overheating problems that caused his #10 racer to spew fluid on the track. For the final five circuits, Miller cruised to his second victory in 2008. Following the Mr. Trailer Sales/Tolloti Pipe #77 were Moore, Joe Oliver, Bob Passwaters, Sr., and Tad Grove. Gibbs, Luther Chambers, Doug Higgins, Ronald Bunton, and Phil Bunton, Jr. were top ten finishers. Moore and Phil Bunton, Jr. won the heats.

The drivers of the fast feature for the Parkway Suzuki Compacts were back to their normal selves as they put on a clean 15-lap event. Cliff Cox and Rich Hess brought the field to green, with Cox bolting into the top spot. Three laps later, three-time Compact point champion Kelly McNutt moved into the second spot and started to reel the leader in. Over the major portion of the race, Cox held a comfortable lead, while A.J. Diano and Rich Dunlap were trying to move forward. When the double checkered waved, it was Cliff Cox claiming his first career feature win. Following the Dennison Yard/C&K Auto Detailing #70 were McNutt, Diano, Dunlap, and Don Rufener, Jr. The rest of the top ten were Hess, Ron Myers, Max McCartney, Michael Keefe, and Kyle Rector.

The evening’s second Compact feature was a bit intriguing as race leaders had a hard time staying within the breakout rule. In a race that saw six lead changes, Jake Albright had the early advantage. Jesse Page then took over for lap two before Albright passed him back. On lap four, Earl Scranton moved into the lead for a handful of laps before he was sent pitside for a speeding ticket. That gave the lead back to Albright for the next five laps before he broke out of his qualifying time. Tim Westerfield, Jr. was handed the lead but his car started to sputter in the corners. On the move again was Page, and the many time Compact second feature winner added another trophy to the collection with the last lap pass. Following him in the official rundown were Westerfield, Jason Grewell, Adam Mishler, and Bob Passwaters, Jr. The rest of the top ten were Jeffrey Orr, Chris Bloom, Larry Ennis, Justin Vanfossen, and Robert Bunton.

In the final Compact event, Pat Carnes led the first nine laps before he timed out of his qualifying lap, giving rookie Taylor Moore the lead. Moore, driving his dad’s Compact, bettered him by one spot as earlier Pat finished second in the Pure Stock feature. Taylor celebrated with his sizable fan club and family along the frontstretch after his first career feature win. The Advance Auto Towing/Dunlap’s Marathon #80 was followed by Dan Konovsek, Paul Stull, Kenny Jewell, and Tim Frederick. The rest of the top ten were Howard Bartholow, Mark Bates, Tyler Schupbach, Perk Pyle, and Joe Slentz. McCartney, Scranton, Kyle Grove, and Carnes were the heat race winners. Rich Dunlap set fast time.

A field of 11 cars lined up for the Midvale Speedway Figure 8 feature. Isaac Ferrebee held the advantage for the first seven laps of the twelve lap affair. On lap 8, one of the weekly Figure 8 frontrunners Jason Morgan assumed the lead with a little bump and run. Ferrebee returned the favor but only returned to lead for a short time. Morgan went on to his second feature win of the season, while point leader Don Rufener, Jr. finished right behind. Both drivers started toward the tail of the field, as the race was aligned and inverted using this year’s current points. Ferrebee, Gene Morgan, and Kenny Jewell completed the top five. The rest of the top ten were Joe Slentz, Earl Scranton, Tim Frederick, Larry Ennis, and Jeffrey Orr.

Ten pastors lined up for this year’s faster pastor race. New Cumberland United Methodist Church pastor Ted Knapp sped his way to victory in his third career faster pastor race. Following him to the line were Steve Stewart, Brian Flood, Joe Perry, and Don Knisely. Larry Fletcher, Rod Phillips, Eric Cermeans, Dana Stoneking, and Nathan Downs rounded out the top ten.

Midvale Speedway officials would like to thank the drivers and fans for coming out to make week #13 a great event after the roughness of night #12. The track will have action again this coming Saturday, August 16 with the Spectator Drags for the first time in 2008. With the first three parking lot drag events canceled due to rain, competitors are itching to get back on the track at intermission. Late Models, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Compacts will all be in action.

Pit gates open at 2:30, hotlaps and grandstands at 3:00, qualifying at 4:30, and racing at 6:30. Admission prices will be $10 for adults, $8 for seniors 62+, $6 for kids 6-15, and children 5 and under will be free. More information may be found at midvalespeedway.com.
