Smith Brothers Take Top Two LM Spots
July 19, 2008

Smith Brothers Take Top Two LM Spots
Another stout field of cars was on hand this past Saturday, July 19 at Midvale Speedway. The drivers put on an outstanding show from the first green flag to the final checkered during the five division racing.

The McIntosh Oil Company Late Model division had its best car count in recent years, as 24 paced the track during the time trial session. Last week’s winner, Rich Marcum and rookie driver Bryant Smith brought the 22-car field in for the green with Marcum setting the pace. On the move early was seventh place starter Bubba Smith. After a lap 4 restart, Smith moved from fifth to third and took over second from his younger brother on lap nine. While Smith was applying pressure on the leader, Marcum was clocked under his qualifying time and was sent to the tail. That handed the lead to Bubba Smith, while brother Bryant and top qualifier Ryan Tedesco were second and third. Tedesco took second around lap seventeen and followed Smith for the next several laps. With just one lap remaining, Smith opened up the bottom lane coming off of turn four, Tedesco dashed to the inside and the two raced side-by-side into turn one. Tedesco’s car turned sideways and spun after a gallant effort. Smith breathed a sigh of relief and went on to claim his first feature win of 2008. His Smith’s Auto Sales/Finish Line Motors #12 was followed by brother Bryant Smith, point leader Mike Miller, John Ambrose, and Rich Marcum who rallied for a top five. Ron Jaberg, Jr., Bob Schneider, Jr., Darrel Dexter, John Sluka, and Tedesco completed the top ten. Bryant Smith, Dexter, and Kenny Cantrell claimed the heat wins, while Cantrell won the last chance race.

Another small field of Tusco Net Sport Stocks gathered for a 20-lap main event. Chris Miller and Doug Decker, filling in for Blake Mackey, came to the green with Miller moving out front. 2007-champion Kevin McClintock, looking for his third feature win of the year, took over the lead on lap three. On a lap five restart, McClintock shoved high coming off of turn two, allowing Nick Grubbs to the bottom. Grubbs, with all mechanical and handling woes behind him took a convincing lead. Over the final circuits, top qualifier Ron Dague could not catch Grubbs, who went on to claim victory #1 of 2008. The Minerva driver was followed by Dague, McClintock, Scott Archer, and Decker. Grubbs also won the heat.

The Northern Ohio Legends were present for the third time this season. Randy Burns and Steve Rector led the field to green with Burns grabbing the early lead. With Dale Dodge, Jr. running second and Dennis Knox in third, Jason Knox started his move from fourth. On lap four, Knox was third, went to the outside lane and around the bumper-to-bumper combo of Burns and Dodge. Knox dominated to the finish during a relatively well run and clean race. Dale Dodge, Jr., Randy Burns, Steve Rector, and Billy Richards round out the top five but only Knox and Burns were found legal in post race tech. Top ten finishers were Jonathan Reitter, Jeff Huber, Mike Copen, Tom Spisak, Daniel Shively, Mike MacDonald, Wendall Napper, and A.J. Yoder. The Knox’s claimed the heat race wins.

The ever improving field of Midvale Speedway Pure Stocks put on another exciting race. Polesitter Dick Aubihl led the first lap before Teddy Oliver moved to the front. Oliver was able to set the pace until lap eight when Pure Stock point leader Tory Gibbs became the new favorite. Rich Schweitzer, just as he did last week, moved into second but came up short in his run for the win. Gibbs, from Port Washington, Ohio, was followed to his fifth feature win by Schweitzer, Oliver, Lee McCreery, and Dick Aubihl. Phil Bunton, Jr., Pat Moore, Brian Oliver, Doug Higgins, and Luther Chambers were top ten finishers. Teddy and Brian Oliver won the heats, while Gibbs was the fast qualifier.

Despite saying that the front wheel drive Compacts were the toughest cars he has ever had to drive, Mario Diano picked up the Parkway Suzuki Compact fast feature win. Diano, filling in for vacationing brother A.J., led from start to finish, while Jason Morgan, Johnny Campbell, Don Rufener, Jr., and Rich Dunlap completed the top five. The rest of the top ten were Jay Hunt, Kelly McNutt, Max McCartney, Kyle Rector, and Rich Hess.

Joe Konovsek led the first six laps of the second Compact feature, but an accident between he and Jeffrey Orr eliminated him from the event. That gave the lead to John McNutt, who has twice picked up feature wins this season. McNutt, though, had plenty of pressure from Derek Grewell. Because of the strong challenge, McNutt was forced under his qualifying time. Moments after receiving the black flag, contact came from Grewell. The latter was given his spot back due to the McNutt breakout situation. Grewell went on to victory, while Brad Henry, Jesse Page, Bob Passwaters, Jr., and Felicia Myers completed the top five. Other top ten finishes were claimed by Kyle Grove, Orr, Billy Nicholas, Jake Albright, and Larry Ennis.

Ryan Kopp arrived at the speedway late, did not qualify, and started at the tail of the third Compact feature. Kopp methodically made his way toward the front and took the lead with three to go to claim his first feature win of 2008. The Zoarville, Ohio campaigner defeated Joe Fitch, Paul Stull, Tim Frederick, and Pat Carnes. Taylor Moore, Joe Slentz, Jason Anthony, Mike Lawson, and Howard Bartholow finished the top ten.

Johnny Campbell, Derek Grewell, Joe Konovsek, Jake Albright, and Mike Lawson were preliminary event winners. Jay Hunt set fast time.

The Modifieds return for their only appearance of 2008 this coming Saturday, July 26. The American Modified Series will be joined by Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, Compacts, and Figure 8’s.

Pit gates will open at 2:00, with practice and grandstands at 2:30, qualifying at 4:30 and racing at 6:30. Admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors 62+, $8 for kids 6-15, and children five and under are free. Pit admission is $20 for members and $30 for non-members.

An open practice will be held Friday night from 4:00-8:00. Pit admission is $10 per person.
