Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2026 Race Season |
 | June 7, 2008 |
Mr. Trailer Sales presented five divisions of action and the kid’s bicycle races this past Saturday, June 7th at Midvale Speedway. Late Models, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, Compacts, and Figure 8’s were all in action.
The McIntosh Oil Company Late Models finally put together a great feature event. After the first three races this season turned into caution fests and time limit races, officials decided to eliminate the time limit for the A feature and allow each driver only one caution. If a driver is charged with a second caution, he will be eliminated from action. For at least this night, the rule seemed to work. After three failed starts, the drivers calmed down and put together a fantastic race. Bryant Smith, who was involved in a heat crash in which the car climbed the wall, led the first five circuits before drawing a black flag for going under his qualifying time. That handed the lead to last week’s feature winner Todd Ripley. Looking to go two in-a-row, Ripley put his car in the bottom lane in a great seven lap battle with Mack Gribble, Jr. Gribble working the highside, sometimes sideways, was finally able to clear Gribble going into turn three on lap thirteen. The New Philadelphia, Ohio driver was filling in for rookie John Sluka in the Fast Mass Racing/Frontier Tool & Equipment Rental #76 and picked up his first feature win in many seasons. Top Qualifier Mike Miller rallied from his eleventh place starting spot to pick up a runner-up finish, while Ripley, Greg Beule, and Rick Sibila were top five finishers. The rest of the top ten were Tom Garbrandt, Rich Marcum, Gary Hoopingarner, Bob Schneider, Jr., and Bryant Smith. Ripley and Eichel won the heats.
Scott Archer, looking for his second win straight, started on the pole of the Tusco Net Sport Stock division. The Canton, Ohio driver drove out front, while second place changed hands on a number of occasions. First, it was Nick Grubbs that ran in second. Then, Ron Dague took the spot. After he tried the highside, Grubbs took the spot back away. Then on lap thirteen, Kevin McClintock gave his try in second. To that point, none could get by Archer. Dague, the top qualifier, took second back on lap fourteen and tried for a few circuits to get out front for his fourth feature win. However, on lap sixteen, he and Archer made contact racing off of turn two, sending the leader around. That gave the lead to McClintock who went on to claim his first feature win of 2008. The Federated Auto Parts/Broadrun Cheesehouse #38 was followed by Dague, Scott Archer, Jerry McNealy, and Blake Mackey. Dague won the heat.
The Midvale Speedway Pure Stocks continued with a good show for the fans. Andy Orr, looking for win #1 in his career, led the first eight paces before Keith Anderson scooted by. Anderson, in his strong #32 wouldn’t find it necessarily easy going the final twelve laps though, as top qualifier and two-time feature winner Tad Grove was glued to his rear bumper. The Best Racing #32 proved to be too strong at the finish, as the Barnhill, Ohio driver claimed the win. Grove, Joe Oliver, Tory Gibbs, and Andy Orr completed the top five. Todd Miller, Teddy Oliver, Doug Higgins, Bob Passwaters, Sr., and Phil Bunton, Jr. were top ten finishers. Joe and Teddy Oliver were heat winners.
Rich Dunlap led the first two laps in the Parkway Suzuki Compact feature before Don Rufener, Jr. was able to zip by on the inside. Johnny Campbell and Brad Henry were able to move into second and third, but neither was able to catch the race leader. Following the Route 39 Auto Salvage/Animal Racing #47 were Campbell, Henry, top qualifier Jay Hunt, and A.J. Diano. Other top ten finishers were Adam Mishler, Earl Scranton, Rich Dunlap, Kelly McNutt, and Rich Hess.
Billy Nicholas led lap number one, but it was Bob Passwaters, Jr. taking over on the second lap to set the pace in the second Compact feature. Passwaters went on to lead the next ten laps before rookie Mike Belknap took control. After passing out popsicles to all of the kids in the stands earlier in the night, it was fitting that Belknap would pick up his first feature win. John McNutt took second, Tim Westerfield third, and Joe Konovsek and Bob Passwaters, Jr. fourth and fifth. The rest of the top ten were Nicholas, James Domer, Mike Gribble, Jim Campbell, and Larry Ennis.
Mike Lawson took the lead early in the third Compact feature and would never relinquish the top spot on his way to victory #1 in 2008. The young driver was followed to the victory by Jason Anthony, Paul Stull, Chasity Crawford, and Dan Konovsek.
Compact preliminaries were won by Brad Henry, John McNutt, James Domer, and Mike Lawson.
The Figure 8 feature was a thriller with several close calls at the intersection. Larry Ennis led the first seven laps before his brother-in-law Don Rufener, Jr. took over on the final lap for the victory. Rufener, claiming two feature wins on the night, was followed by Ennis, Jason Morgan, Joe Elerick, and Lennie Orr.
This coming Saturday, June 14th, is a can’t miss event. For the first time ever, Midvale Speedway will be holding a School Bus Figure 8 race and a car demolition derby. Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Compacts will also compete.
The all star studded School Bus lineup includes Ryan Tedesco, Kevin McClintock, Ron Dague, Terry Colletti, and Don Rufener, Jr. A couple of others will be announced the night of the event.
Admission will be $13 for adults, $10 for seniors 62+, $8 for children 6-15, and children five and under are free. Pit admission is $20 for members and $25 for non-members.
