Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2026 Race Season |
 | May 24, 2008 |
MIDVALE, OH - This past Saturday, May 24th, Midvale Speedway officials welcomed the Main Event Racing Series Super Late Model tour to the 3/10-mile track. 20 outlaw bodied cars were pitside for the night’s events, while Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, Compacts, and Figure 8’s were also in competition.
Qualifying for the Main Event cars had Doylestown, Ohio driver Gary Whipkey, the series’ best qualifier, set fast time with a 13.68. Whipkey just barely edged Ryan Tedesco (13.69) and Don Harvey, Jr. (13.70), while Jimmy Carter (13.81) and Dino Long (13.92) rounded out the top five.
Whipkey drew the “8” pill, putting Doug Sommers and Bear Schwartz on the front row. With the green in the air, Sommers raced out front, while Schwartz was able to sneak in line in front of Mike Miller. Sommers immediately checked out on the rest of the field, while Rich Rohrer and Ryan Tedesco worked hard trying to use the outside lane. Rohrer, trying to recover from a first lap pit stop, and Tedesco found the outside lane tough to maneuver on this night. In fact, Tedesco would spin while fighting in the outside groove. All of this turned out to be good news for Sommers, who looked to have the field covered. As the laps wore down, it was easy to see that only mechanical failure would cost Sommers his first Main Event victory. Though just a few cautions bunched the field in a very clean race, Sommers each time had no challenge from Schwartz or Dino Long who later took second. At the finish, the Doylestown, Ohio driver claimed the Terry and Allison Colletti sponsored trophy, while Long, Don Harvey, Jr., Jimmy Carter, and Gary Whipkey completed the top five. Also finishing behind the Nemeth Performance/Carpenter's Asphalt Sealer #3 were Rohrer, Tedesco, Tim Ice, Miller, and Joel McKnight. The Main Event Racing Series will next see action at Kil-Kare Speedway on Friday, June 6.
In the Tusco Net Sport Stock division, top qualifier Ron Dague rolled the dice to invert nearly the full field for the 20-lap feature. Starting from the back, Dague worked his way slowly through the traffic. In front of him, Bill Aubihl led the first couple of laps, while Jerry McNealy took over on lap four. Aubihl, driving Chris Kail’s car, had its handle go away as Mark Striker, Blake Mackey, and Ron Dague tried to get by. Contact then resulted sending cars spinning. After the restart, Dague took second on lap twelve and then used the next five laps to get by McNealy for the lead. For Dague, his third win in three nights to start the season didn’t come easy. The Tolloti Pipe/Barnhill Storage #75 was followed by McNealy, Scott Archer, Ron McBride, and Kevin McClintock. Rounding out the top ten were Striker, Aubihl, Virgil Ravenscroft, III, Blake Bitticker, and Mackey. Archer and Aubihl claimed the heat race victories.
Bob Passwaters, Sr. led the first half of the Midvale Speedway Pure Stock feature. Passwaters, with his best run in a Pure Stock, was overtaken on lap eleven by Tory Gibbs, who claimed a number of feature wins last season. The third year driver had Rich Schweitzer and Jimmy Orr racing for second behind him throughout the latter stages, but their battle kept Gibbs safe out front. The Hoopy’s Kustom Color #10 was followed to its first 2008 win by Orr, Schweitzer, Lee McCreery, and Todd Miller. Passwaters, Brian Oliver, Mike Pyle, Adam Stewart, and Luther Chambers claimed top ten finishes. Tad Grove, the night’s top qualifier claimed the fast heat, while Gibbs won the second preliminary event.
In the Parkway Suzuki Compact fast feature, polesitter Rich Hess led the first two circuits before John McNutt cruised by him to take the lead. McNutt looking for his second feature win of the year, had the dominating car throughout much of the event. His only challenger was nephew Kelly McNutt. The two drivers raced out front to the checkers, picking up a one-two finish for Jacob McNutt, a close relative who had passed two weeks earlier. A.J. Diano, Joe Konovsek, and Jay Hunt finished third thru fifth. The rest of the top ten were Adam Mishler, Johnny Campbell, Don Rufener, Jr., Cliff Cox, and Max McCartney.
Jason Morgan started deep in the second feature field and worked methodically through the pack to take the lead and win from Mike Belknap. The Robertsville, Ohio driver was followed to the line by Bob Passwaters, Jr., Earl Scranton, Brad Henry, and Tom Garbrandt. Other top ten finishers were Tim Westerfield, Jr., Pat Moore, Justin Vanfossen, Larry Ennis, and Jeffrey Orr.
The third Compact feature victory of the night went to Bruce Gibson. After being sent to the back of the field for a spin early in the race, Gibson came all the way back to the front to claim the trophy. Kyle Lawson, Kenny Jewell, Mike Lawson, and Perk Pyle were top five finishers. Completing the top ten were Jason Carman, Taylor Moore, Tyler Schupbach, Paul Stull, and Jake Albright.
Diano, Morgan, James Domer, Pat Carnes, and Stull won the heats, while Jay Hunt set fast time.
Kenny Jewell started on the front row of the Figure 8 feature and took the early lead. The Canton, Ohio driver had Jason Morgan and Don Rufener, Jr. battling for second and when the two made contact, Rufener spun. Morgan tried to challenge the leader, but Jewell never made a mistake and claimed his first Figure 8 feature win. Morgan, Rufener, Larry Ennis, and Jason Carman finished off the top five.
Racing will continue this coming Saturday, May 31 at Midvale Speedway with a five division show. Late Models, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, Compacts, and Legends will all race in heats, pursuits, and features. Racecar bingo will be held for the fans in the stands to win prizes during the evening’s events.
Pits open at 2:30, grandstands open and hotlaps begin at 3:00, qualifying is at 4:00, and racing will see the green at 6:30. Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors 62+, $5 for kids 6-15, and children 5 and under are free.
