 After raining out three of the first four weeks, Midvale Speedway was back in action with Smith’s Auto Sales/Fratello’s Restaurant night, this past Saturday, May 10. The evening featured six divisions of racing, plus an autograph session at intermission. Out of the five classes that also competed on opening night, only one had a repeat feature winner.
When the Tusco Net Sport Stock division rolled onto the track for its 20-lap event, all eyes were on the Tolloti Pipe/Barnhill Storage #75 of Ron Dague. The New Philadelphia, Ohio veteran was dominant on opening night and was looking to go back-to-back to start the season. Starting from the sixth position, Dague worked his way to third by the finish of lap one. Shortly thereafter, he put his racer in the outside lane and started to challenge Chris Kail for the top spot. After a three lap battle, Kail dropped into second and Dague was out front setting the pace. Behind him, drivers were running in a few different packs, racing hard for position. At the finish of the one caution event, Dague claimed his second victory, while Gabe Pringle ran a solid second, Blake Mackey finished third, Nick Grubbs fourth, and Scott Archer came home fifth. The rest of the top ten were Kail, Randy Smart, Virgil Ravenscroft, III, Kevin McClintock, and Jerry McNealy. Smart’s feature run and his track record setting qualifying lap were disallowed due to a carburetor spacer infraction. That moved Hank Massaro to tenth and gave Dague the track record for his qualifying run. Dague won the dash, while Mackey took the heat victory.
Greg Beule and Mark Willison brought the 19-car McIntosh Oil Late Model field to the green. Beule, using the preferred inside lane, set the early pace, with Willison close behind. Despite the large field, the first caution didn’t wave until the sixth lap had been completed. After that, cautions bred cautions, mostly for minor spins. For Beule, it was a long race that had him fending off numerous challenges from Willison to pick up his first win of 2008. Following the Boardman, Ohio driver in the Westgate Ford/Route 39 Auto Salvage #21 at the end of the time shortened race were Willison, Tom Garbrandt, Mike Miller, and Doug McMillen. John Sluka, Kenny Stevens, Rich Marcum, Bubba Smith, and Joel McKnight completed the top ten. Sluka won his first Late Model victory in the dash, while Stevens and Sandquist claimed the heat wins. Smith set fast time for the second week straight.
Mike Phillips, Jr. started fourth in the Midvale Speedway Pure Stock feature, and by lap two he had taken the lead from Bob Passwaters, Sr. As he led at halfway, however, steam shot from the exhaust as mechanical problems ended his night. That gave the lead to Midvale veteran Todd Miller and put Rich Schweitzer in second. Over the last half of the race, Schweitzer got just a couple of looks to the inside but Miller was able to close the door to hang on for the race victory. The Todd Miller Excavating/Somerdale Inn #77 was followed by Schweitzer, Keith Anderson, Phil Bunton, Jr., and Dick Aubihl. Joe Oliver, Jimmy Orr, Doug Higgins, Tory Gibbs, and Passwaters were top ten finishers. Tad Grove was top qualifier with a new track record and won the dash, while Phillips won the heat.
Brad Henry and Earl Scranton set the pace in the early stages of the Parkway Suzuki Compact fast feature. Scranton led the first two laps and Henry the next two, before Scranton controlled the position. One of the most improved drivers/cars over the first couple of nights, Rich Dunlap, took second with five to go. The Dover, Ohio driver went to the inside with just two laps to go and came to the stripe as the event winner. The Route 39 Auto Salvage/Dunwoody Motorsports #17 was followed in the top five by Scranton, Johnny Campbell, Tammy Rufener, and Adam Mishler. Other top ten finishers included Kelly McNutt, A.J. Diano, Joe Konovsek, Don Rufener, Jr., and Jay Hunt.
Jason Morgan, driving his backup car, held the early lead in the second Compact feature. Just past halfway, however, the Robertsville, Ohio campaigner broke out of his qualifying time, handing the lead to Derek Grewell. Grewell, driving the Adventure Harley Davidson/Schultz Lawn Service #149 was able to keep John McNutt in tow for his first career feature victory. Bob Passwaters, Jr., James Domer, and Billy Nicholas completed the top five.
Kyle Lawson led from lap three to lap fourteen in the final Compact event, but on the last lap, Pat Moore raced around to his outside to claim the victory. Lawson was second with Jason Anthony, Jamie Leslie, and Isaac Ferrebee were top five finishers. Chris Smith, Kenny Jewell, Doug Milburn, Taylor Moore, and Chasity Crawford all finished in the top ten.
Compact preliminary race victories went to Adam Mishler, Rich Hess, John McNutt, James Domer, and Pat Moore. Don Rufener, Jr. set fast time.
Jason Morgan started up front in the Figure 8 feature and never relinquished the lead over the eight lap event. Morgan kept the opening night winner and defending champion, Don Rufener, Jr. at bay to claim the $100 top prize.
Spectator Drags and the Faster Pastor race are special events on this weekend’s schedule. Spectator Drag participants are requested to bring a helmet with them. Also racing on Saturday, May 17, are Late Models, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Compacts.
Pit gates open at 2:30, hotlaps start at 3:00, qualifying at 4:30, and racing at 6:30. Admission prices are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, $6 for kids 6-15, and children 5 and under are free.
