Great Action Shots Here
Due to a September 8 rainout, the 2007 Season Championships were combined with the Fall Classic features this past Saturday, September 15. A stellar field of cars converged, as 122 drivers raced for double points and extra prize money.
The Northern Ohio Legend class made their annual appearance at the Fall Classic a successful one, as the race saw just one caution flag and battles throughout the field. Larry Young, one of the very few who can challenge weekly favorite Dennis Knox, started in the second spot for the 25-lap feature. After polesitter Dale Dodge, Jr. led the first circuit, Young raced by and into the lead. Dodge didn’t give up too much ground, but was never able to mount a challenge to the finish. Knox, despite racing in the top five, had nothing for the leaders. Following the trio were Jake Francis and Randy Burns. Mike Copen, Jason Knox, Billy Richards, Tom Spisak, and Jeff Huber were top ten finishers. Copen and Dennis Knox won the heats.
Greg Beule and Ron Jaberg, Jr., by way of a “3” invert, brought the Advance Auto Parts Late Model field to the green. As the duo exited turn two, Jaberg, driving the Stemple owned #30, slid sideways into the low lane and collected the polesitter. Both drivers then shot back up the track and into the retaining wall ending their chances at victory. Ryan Tedesco, the fastest qualifier and 2007 Midvale Speedway point champion, became the new polesitter and set a torrid pace throughout the 35-lapper. With consistent laps in the 14.20’s and 30’s, Tedesco pulled away from a strong pack of Mike Miller, Joel McKnight, and A.P. Ren to claim the top prize. Bob Eichel finished off his ‘07 campaign with a solid top five finish. Also following the Marathon Manufacturing #70 were Doug McMillen, John Sandquist, Chris Grubbs, Gary Hoopingarner, and Dave McAlicker. McMillen and Ren were heat race winners.
The Tusco Net Sport Stock division had its best field in recent memory. Also running with the “3” invert, the fastest qualifiers brought the field to green. Entering the night, Kevin McClintock held a slim lead in the 2007 standings over Nick Grubbs. Grubbs, having a work commitment, was unable to compete and his backup driver Mike Ravenscroft had terrible mechanical luck with the car. McClintock, bringing the field to green, slipped back into the third spot on the opening pace. Top qualifier and third place starter, Ron Dague, immediately started a battle with leader Randy Smart for the $350 payday. The battle was short lived as Dague shot by and led to the finish. The Tolloti Pipe/Barnhill Storage #75 continued his hot streak with another victory and was followed by McClintock, Smart, Scott Archer, and Virgil Ravenscroft, III. John Sluka, Chris Kail, Gabe Pringle, Chris Miller, and Jerry McNealy were credited with top ten’s. Dague and Sluka won the heat race events.
Ken Feister held the early lead in the 25-lap Midvale Speedway Pure Stock feature. However, on lap 8, Feaster’s #40 racer spun into the infield, handing the lead to Rick Pereces, a Barberton Speedway regular. Pereces went on to lead the next seven laps before Chris Mick took his turn out front. Both drivers felt trouble looming, though, as Jimmy Orr, Mike Phillips, Jr., and Gavin Sekulich were battling behind them. Sekulich was able to take advantage of a couple of slip-ups and eventually found himself out front. The Barberton Speedway stand-out raced to the finish fending off a strong Phillips. The Tallmadge Asphalt/Baker Performance Parts #3 was followed by Phillips, Pereces, Brian Wood, and Paul Parson. Orr, Keith Anderson, Tim Oliver, Randy Rice, and Dick Aubihl finished out the top ten. Anderson, Feister, and Parson claimed the prelim wins.
Some of the best racing of the night again came from the Compact fast feature contestants. On this night, the drivers were competing for prize money in addition to the large trophy. Eighteen of the best four cylinder wheelmen in the state of Ohio started the 20-lap event and after a caution free race, many of those finished. Polesitter, Earl Scranton, led John McNutt around the oval for thirteen circuits before fellow Chevy Beretta pilot Michael Keefe wrestled second away and set his sights on the leader. Slowly working the race into a battle, Keefe pulled alongside on the final lap. As the duo raced to the checkered, Scranton edged Keefe by a mere bumper cover to claim the exciting victory. Top qualifier, A.J. Diano had a great run from deep in the field to finish third, while McNutt and Don Rufener, Jr. rounded out the top five. The rest of the top ten were Kelly McNutt, Kyle Rector, Tad Grove, Jason Morgan, and Brad Henry.
In the second Compact feature, heat race winner Ryan Kopp held the lead past the halfway mark. Terry Klausman, the 2007 Barberton Speedway champion, was racing for the first time at Midvale and was able to successfully take the lead from the Midvale regular. Klausman went on to lead the final eight laps to claim the victory ahead of Aaron Prater. Third across the line, Rusty Rouse, Jr., also was credited with victory, as he was the first four cylinder regular in the field to finish. Bubba Smith and Ryan Kopp picked up to five finishes. James Domer, Jim Campbell, Randy Cecil, Larry Ennis, and Tammy Rufener were top five finishers.
In the final Compact feature, Midvale timer Debbie LeGlise had the hot hand, as the first two leaders, Richard Raupach and Pat Carnes were caught breaking out of their qualifying times. Kyle Lawson, the new leader, ran the final thirteen laps within his qualifying time allowance to claim another feature victory. Phil Bunton, Jr., Dan Konovsek, Doug Milburn, and Jaimie Huebner finished the point season with top five’s. Other top ten finishers were Paul Mangum, Jr., Pat Madison, Howard Bartholow, Jeffrey Orr, and Chasity Crawford.
Compact preliminary trophies are on the mantles of Michael Keefe, Tammy Rufener, Ryan Kopp, Phil Bunton, Jr., and Jesse Crabtree.
Eleven drivers lined up for the $250 to win Figure 8 feature. Lennie Orr, after drawing the #2 pill, held the early lead. The Compact veteran has made his mark on Figure 8 racing this season. Using the car that his son Jeff pilots in the Compact class, Lennie used a mixture of aggressiveness and patience to tightrope to Figure 8 victory. Don Rufener, Jr., Brad Henry, Justin Renicker, and Ryan Kopp crossed the finish line in positions two through five.
Midvale Speedway officials would like to thank everyone for the great turnout on the Fall Classic Season Championship night. Also, congratulations are in order for point champs Ryan Tedesco, Kevin McClintock, Chester McMasters, Kelly McNutt, and Don Rufener, Jr.
Midvale Speedway will hold its final event on Saturday night, October 6 with the Pure Stock and Compact Nationals. Figure 8’s and Spectator Drags will also be on the night’s card. Complete information will be made available on midvalespeedway.com.
