Great Action Shots Here

Light rain showers at race time threatened the action this past Saturday, August 25 at Midvale Speedway. However, officials pushed forward to get the program completed and with the help of many drivers, the track was ready for racing by 7:30. With five full divisions on hand, familiar faces and drivers with green as a primary color took the top two divisional wins.

With the unfavorable forecast for Saturday night, a smaller field of Advance Auto Parts Late Models gathered for the feature event. Bob “The Animal” Eichel and Greg Beule brought the field to green. After a failed restart, the field realigned and gave it another try. As the top four raced through turns three and four, contact between Eichel and Ron Jaberg, Jr., the third place competitor, created an accident that eliminated the polesitter and sent Jaberg, Doug McMillen, Chris Grubbs, and William Robinson pitside for repairs. As the field settled down, Boardman, Ohio driver Greg Beule set the early pace. However, on lap three, top qualifier Steve Gilland took advantage of a good starting spot to race out front. Gilland, filling in for point leader Ryan Tedesco, set a torrid pace for the rest of the event and went on to his second victory in as many tries. Following the Marathon Manufacturing #70 were Beule with his second solid finish in-a-row, Tom Garbrandt during his first race in an unfamiliar car, McMillen who raced without much of his bodywork, and Jaberg who battled back from two pitstops and plenty of lost track position. Justin Courtney, Bob Sibila, Jr., Gary Hoopingarner, Chris Grubbs, and Dan Stemple were the top ten finishers. Jaberg won the dash, while Sibila took the heat.

The 20-lap Tusco Net Sport Stock feature had a “3” invert, putting the fastest qualifiers towards the front of the field. Last week’s winner, Scott Archer started from the pole position, while Kevin McClintock, the point leader, flanked him to the outside. McClintock beat Archer off of turn two on the original start, but a caution negated his run. On the second try, Archer raced out front with Ron Dague taking second. The Canton, Ohio driver controlled the race for the first four laps, but on lap five, Dague was out front and on a rail dominating his way to the finish. The Tolloti Pipe/Barnhill Storage #75 raced to yet another win and was followed by McClintock, Archer, Nick Grubbs, Glen Jewell, Jerry McNealy, Chris Miller, and John Sluka, whose car was badly damaged in an early crash with Grubbs. Dague won the dash and set fast time, while Grubbs took the heat race victory.

Dick Aubihl and Dan Hall were the front row starters in the 20-lap Midvale Speedway Pure Stock feature. Aubihl raced into the lead and set the early pace, but his early run was negated after going under his qualifying time. Hall went on to lead the next five laps in his Dodge product. Jimmy Orr, last week’s winner, became the third and final leader of the race when he found an opening to the inside. The Dennison, Ohio driver cruised from that point on and claimed his fourth feature victory. Brian Wood, Doug Higgins, Keith Anderson, and Pat Moore claimed top five finishes. The rest of the top ten were Hall, Teddy Oliver, Chuck Sampson, Corey Ross, and Bob Passwaters, Sr. The race was marred by an accident on lap five when Oliver and Chester McMasters got together in turn four. After McMasters spun, the point leader waited on Oliver to come back around the speedway, turned into his right rear and attempted to spin him under yellow. In the process, Oliver’s car flipped over onto its side and then back onto its wheels. Mayhem ensued and both were done for the night. Orr won the dash, Oliver the heat, and McMasters fast time.

The biggest first lap crash of the night happened in turns three and four during the Parkway Suzuki Compact fast feature. Several cars were involved and a few were eliminated from action. When the green again waved, polesitter Kyle Rector opened up a lane that Adam Mishler filled as he raced to the front. Don Rufener, Jr. followed, but not before the leader had a comfortable cushion. Mishler went on to lead the first thirteen circuits, but after opening up the door for Rufener, the veteran driver shot by to the inside and went on to claim his second Compact feature victory of the season. Following the Auto Zone/Animal Racing #47 were A.J. Diano who had another solid finish looking for his first Compact win, Mishler, Brad Henry, and Johnny Campbell. The other top ten finishers were Rector, Kelly McNutt, Justin Renicker, Michael Keefe, and Tad Grove.

Felicia Myers led the first seven laps in the second Compact feature but was clocked going under her time and sent pitside. Kenny Ford took over at that point and held off Rusty Rouse, Jr. for the victory. Earl Scranton, Larry Ennis, and Joe Konovsek were top five finishers. John McNutt, Bob Passwaters, Jr., Jesse Page, Jim Campbell, and Rich Dunlap were credited with top ten’s.

Despite a late race challenge from Jason Grewell, rookie driver Phil Bunton, Jr. claimed his first career victory in the third Compact feature. The Strasburg, Ohio competitor had Grewell, Dan Konovsek, Justin Vanfossen, and Ron Myers following him to the checkered. Tim Frederick, Pat Moore, Jake Albright, Howard Bartholow, and Paul Stull finished in positions six through ten.

Brad Henry took the Compact fast dash win, while Michael Keefe, Kenny Ford, Kyle Lawson, and Dan Konovsek won the heats. Tad Grove was the fast qualifier.

Don Rufener, Jr.’s bid to win yet another Figure 8 feature came up just short as Lennie Orr started towards the front and raced to his second main event win. Rufener did take second, Ryan Kopp third, Justin Renicker fourth, and Otto Polilli fifth. The Figure 8’s will be back in action on Saturday, September 8.

The Main Event Racing Series Super Late Models return to action this coming Saturday, September 1 for the Carter Lumber 75. Pure Stocks and Compacts will also be in action for the exciting night of racing entertainment.

Pit gates open at 1:00, hotlaps start at 2:30, qualifying will begin at 4:30, and racing will see its first green flag at 6:30. Admission prices are $15 for adults and seniors, $8 for kids 6-15, and free for kids 5 and under.

More detailed information will be posted as the week progresses on midvalespeedway.com.
