Great Action Shots Here

This past Saturday, August 18, Hartzler’s Quality Housing presented five divisions of action at Midvale Speedway. The Late Models, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Compacts were joined by the Legend cars. The dashes and heats were fun events to watch, while some of the features were a little lengthy due to a number of caution periods.

The traveling Legend Car series performed in front of the crowd during the evening’s first feature. Dennis Knox and Bob Petry brought the field to Terry Colletti’s green flag. Knox, who has won the majority of Legend races this season, was expected to dominate to the finish. However, after leading the first three laps, second row starter Larry Young was able to wrestle the lead away on the inside lane. Young, looking for his second Midvale win in-a-row, led the field for three laps before Knox was able to race back out front. The Tallmadge, Ohio driver controlled the race from that point on and went on to victory in his #31 racer. Young, Randy Burns, Tom Spisak, and Shane Gibson completed the top five. The rest of the top ten were Bill Richards, Wendall Napper, Jeff Huber, Robert Copen, and Dave Spotton were the other top ten finishers. A lap two crash eliminated one-third of the field. Young and Burns were the night’s heat race winners.

The Advance Auto Parts 25-lap feature lineup was set with a full field inversion, as the night’s top qualifier, Ryan Tedesco rolled a 15. Chris Grubbs and William Robinson started up front and Grubbs held the early lead. As Grubbs car paced the oval much better than in recent weeks, a lap three caution waved to send him to the tail for going under his qualifying time. That put Doug Ehret, making just his second start of the season, out front. Much like Grubbs, Ehret would lead the next three laps before a yellow would send him to the back for breaking out of his qualifying time. That put Greg Beule at the point. The Boardman, Ohio driver saw Doug McMillen and Ryan Tedesco, in his mirror, working from the back of the starting field. McMillen moved into second on lap 11 and one lap later took the lead from Beule. Tedesco, the current point leader, raced his way into second with about ten laps to go and started his battle for victory. After a late race restart, Tedesco shot to the outside and drove by McMillen for another division leading victory. McMillen, Beule, Bear Schwartz, and Bob Eichel picked up top five finishes behind the Marathon Manufacturing #70. Rounding out the top ten were Ehret, Robinson, Dan Stemple, Mark Willison, and Grubbs. Todd Ripley won the dash, while Mike Miller and Beule won the heats.

Pat Moore led the first seven laps of the Parkway Suzuki fast Compact feature before Tammy Rufener looked to the inside on the backstretch. Rufener and Moore made some slight contact battling for the lead and Rufener came away with a flat tire. Not missing a beat, her husband Don was able to take advantage and race into the lead. Tad Grove and Kelly McNutt were able to later take second and third, but Rufener held on for the victory. Following the Auto Zone/Tusc Tire & Auto Repair #47 were Grove, McNutt, A.J. Diano, and Jason Morgan. Brad Henry, Jay Hunt, Adam Mishler, Bob Passwaters, Jr., and Joe Konovsek claimed top ten finishes.

The second Compact feature of the evening had Dan Konovsek and Bubba Smith exchanging the lead during the first eight laps. On the move from the back of the pack was Earl Scranton. The Fresno, Ohio driver looked to be on his way to victory, but was clocked under his qualifying time late in the race giving the lead back to Konovsek. The second year driver came across the stripe as victor, but post race inspection caused some headaches for the top four finishers. Konovsek, Jason Anthony, and Bubba Smith were all disqualified for wheelbase infractions, while Kyle Rector did not show up for tech. That gave the win to fifth place finisher, Jesse Page. The Waynesburg, Ohio driver was followed in the official rundown by Larry Ennis, Rich Dunlap, Rusty Rouse, Jr., and Jason Grewell. Don Lehman, Tim Frederick, Earl Scranton, James Domer, and Jim Campbell finished in the top ten.

The Tusco Net Sport Stock feature had Bill Aubihl and John Sluka leading the early laps. Aubihl continued the streak of feature leaders going under their qualifying time, and was sent to the tail. That put Sluka at the point until Ron Dague worked his way from the back to take control. Most thought that the race was over at that point, but on lap 12, Dague spun coming out of the fourth turn. Despite a great 360, the caution was thrown for the oncoming field and Dague was relegated to the tail. Canton’s Scott Archer was the benefactor and led the remaining circuits before the race was cut short due to time constraints. The Arch-a-motive #28 was followed to victory by Kevin McClintock, Chris Kail, Jerry McNealy, and Mike Hostetler in the official rundown. Dave McMillen, Nick Grubbs, Gabe Pringle, Sluka, and Aubihl completed the top ten. McClintock and Sluka won the heats, while Pringle was credited with the dash win.

Bubba Smith was the leader during the early circuits of the Midvale Speedway Pure Stock feature. Teddy Oliver, though, was trying to get to victory lane for the first time this season and claimed the lead on lap six. After pacing the field for the next three laps, Oliver and Chester McMasters got together entering turn one. Oliver fell out of the event with suspension problems, while McMasters continued. The race was not over though, as Rich Schweitzer and Jimmy Orr each took their turns leading. Orr led the last six laps and claimed his third victory of 2007. Following the Mallett Energy #28 were Schweitzer, McMasters, Doug Higgins, and Randy Doolin. The rest of the top ten were Dick Aubihl, Bob Passwaters, Sr., Tim Oliver, Smith, and Dan Hall. Tory Gibbs won the dash, while the heat trophies were claimed by McMasters and Aubihl. Gibbs set fast time.

Tammy Ondo and Kenny Jewell controlled the early laps of the third Compact feature. Ondo fell out in a frontstretch crash, while Jewell was black flagged for going under his qualifying time. Eventually taking the lead for good was Jamie Leslie. The Tusky, Ohio driver claimed the win during his first race with a brand new car. Pat Carnes, Kyle Lawson, Phil Bunton, Jr., and Jeffrey Orr had top fives. Jake Albright, Billy Nicholas, Jesse Crabtree, John Wissman, and Perk Pyle finished in the top ten. Kelly McNutt won the dash, while Tammy Rufener, Kenny Ford, Jason Grewell, and Mike Martin won the heats. A.J. Diano set fast time.

The Starboyz Professional Stunt Bike Team will be at Midvale Speedway this coming Saturday, August 25. Late Models, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, Compacts, and Figure 8’s will race. Qualifying is at 4:40, while racing will start at 6:30.
