Great Action Shots Here

This past Saturday, August 11, drivers in five different divisions were in competition at Midvale Speedway. Spectator Drags were held in addition to racing from Late Models, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, Compacts, and Figure 8’s.

Chris Grubbs and William Robinson were the scheduled front row starters for the 25-lap Advance Auto Parts Late Model feature. At the opposite end of the field were the night’s fastest qualifiers. Steve Gilland, filling in for Ryan Tedesco, rolled a large inversion after setting fast time. That put him at the back of the field but he worked quickly in the opening laps to move towards the front. As Grubbs fell back from the pole, Mark Willison, who was relegated to the backup car due to engine failure the previous week, was racing up front. Bob Schneider, Jr. and Joel McKnight battled towards the front as well. Eventually, Gilland and Mike Miller, two of the quickest cars in the feature field had moved towards the front. Gilland raced into the lead, while Miller took second. While Gilland had a large lead built up for the middle of the race, Miller later closed to a few car lengths but came up short at the end. Following the Marathon Manufacturing #70 of Gilland were Miller, Todd Ripley who had a solid run in his first 2007 race, Doug McMillen, and Bob Schneider, Jr. The rest of the top ten were Greg Beule, Bob Eichel, Gary Hoopingarner, Joel McKnight, and Chris Grubbs. McMillen and Schneider were heat winners.

The Tusco Net Sport Stock feature was interesting from start to finish. Several cautions eventually ended the race two laps short of the finish, but the results were basically decided at that point. John Sluka took the early lead during the 20-lap event and proved to be very tough to pass. Kevin McClintock, the Sport Stock point leader, tried high and low to get by to no avail. Each time McClintock would get a run to the outside, Sluka’s car would drift a little high coming out of the turn four portion of the speedway, negating the runner-ups run. Nick Grubbs and Ron Dague would take second and third and have their shot at one point in the race as well. However, contact between the two relegated them both to the tail. Eventually, Sluka crossed the stripe victorious. His win, though, was short lived as the car was found to be too light crossing the scales in post race inspection. Patience paid off for McClintock, who claimed his second win of the year. Following the Kuntry Kut Mowing/Federated Auto Parts #38 were Gabe Pringle, Nick Grubbs, David Breehl who drove the Chris Kail car to a solid finish, and Jerry McNealy with his second top five in a row. Chris Miller, Ron Dague, Dougie Cross, and Mike Ravenscroft completed the finishing order. Grubbs and Cross were heat winners, while McClintock was fast qualifier.

Pat Moore led the early laps of the Midvale Speedway Pure Stock feature. The Louisville, Ohio driver was fighting some car problems throughout the night, but was able to take command as the division’s fastest cars moved toward the front. Teddy Oliver and John McNutt were involved in a collision while trying to squeeze through some tight spaces in the field, hurting their chances for victory. Avoiding any incidents was 2006 point champion Rich Schweitzer. The New Philadelphia driver took the lead and proved to be tough to beat over the race’s final circuits. Tory Gibbs, Chester McMasters, Jimmy Orr, and Dick Aubihl rounded out the top five. The rest of the top ten were Oliver, D.J. Litten, Tim Oliver, Doug Higgins, and Moore. Teddy Oliver and Moore won the heats. McMasters was the fastest qualifier.

Jay Hunt and Doug Milburn started on the front row of the fast Parkway Suzuki Compact feature for the first time in their careers. Hunt raced into the early lead, while Adam Mishler and A.J. Diano worked through the traffic to challenge. The three car battle for the lead proved to be challenging for Mishler. Eventually, he was able to clear Hunt, while Diano followed. As the laps wound down, Mishler settled in for his second feature win of the year. Diano finished second, while Tad Grove came from dead last to finish third, Hunt fourth, and Kenny Ford completed the top five. Other top ten finishers were Brad Henry, Jason Morgan, Joe Konovsek, Chris Bloom, and Johnny Campbell.

Bob Passwaters, Sr. looked to be on his way to victory in the second Compact feature before mechanical problems ended his strong run on the last lap. Jesse Page raced into the lead and took the victory, while the Waynesburg, Ohio driver was followed by Rusty Rouse, Jr., Passwaters, Larry Ennis, and Kyle Rector. Mark Willison, Jr., Andy Orr, Kenny Jewell, Pat Moore, and Felicia Myers claimed top tens.

Dan Konovsek started dead last in the third Compact feature and raced all the way to the front. However, one driver standing between himself and victory was Minerva, Ohio’s Kyle Lawson. The rookie driver was able to fend off the Konovsek challenge and race to victory. Konovsek finished second, while Tammy Ondo, Barb Feister, and Tim Frederick rounded out the top five. Jesse Crabtree, Linda Morgan, Perk Pyle, Joe Elerick, and Gary Gibson claimed top ten runs.

Ten J.D. Byrider Figure 8 drivers lined up for a wild 10 lap feature event. Going for the extra payoff, due to the larger car count, division favorites Don Rufener, Jr. and Lennie Orr raced toward the front quickly. Early leader, Kenny Jewell, eventually succumbed to the two and fell back to third. As the checkered waved, Rufener took the victory, while Orr, Jewell, Earl Scranton, and Cody Shuss followed. Ryan Kopp, Tim Frederick, Jesse Crabtree, Jaimie Huebner, and Joe Elerick were the rest of the finishing order.

Racing will continue this coming Saturday, August 18 when the Legend cars join Late Models, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Compacts. Biker night will allow anyone riding their motorcycle to the track, $2 off grandstand admission. Pit gates will open at 2:30 and hotlaps will start at 3:00. Qualifying will be at 4:40, while racing will start at 6:30.
