Action Shots Here
This past Saturday, June 23, drivers in five different divisions competed for double points during the 2007 Mid-Season Championships. Late Models, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, Compacts, and Figure 8’s were all in action.
Mike Miller and Tom Garbrandt started on the front row for the 25-lap Advance Auto Parts Late Model feature. Garbrandt, using the outside lane, shot into the lead, while Miller, driving Bob Schneider’s car on this night, fell back into second. As Miller raced others for position, Garbrandt raced away from the field during the early laps. However, Garbrandt’s chances for victory ended when he went under his qualifying mark for the second time during the race. With that relegating him to the tail, Miller was back out front. Behind him, John Ambrose, Jr. and Ryan Tedesco were racing to the front in the outside lane. Ambrose eventually was able to pass Miller after a several lap battle. Tedesco followed, but had given up plenty of ground by that point. With seven laps to go, Tedesco started his chase and with just a couple to go, he was glued to Ambrose’s rear bumper. On the final circuit, Tedesco made slight contact coming off of turn two, Ambrose recovered, and the two finished the race in first and second. Following the American Thunder/1st Class Towing #24 were Tedesco, Mark Willison, A.P. Ren, and Mike Miller. The rest of the top ten were Ron Jaberg, Jr., Greg Beule, Tom Garbrandt, Bob Eichel, and John Sandquist. Willison won the fast dash, while Beule took the heat win. Tedesco set fast time and Bob Eichel won the pursuit.
The Late Model race was exciting, but the Tusco Net Sport Stock action was top notch from start to finish. Ron Dague, who has been on top of his game the last few weeks, raced into the lead in the early stages. However, he wasn’t able to put any distance on point leader Kevin McClintock. Dague’s car seemed to be just a little off during the feature race, and on a restart, McClintock raced by off of the second turn. Once McClintock was out front, though, Dague started his battle to wrestle the lead back. Lap-after-lap, he would peek to the inside off of the second turn, and eventually he got the job done. As the laps wound down, Dague was able to deny McClintock any chance for a win, and the New Philadelphia, Ohio driver picked up his third straight Sport Stock feature win. McClintock, Nick Grubbs, Randy Smart, and Virgil Ravenscroft, III completed the top five. The rest of the top ten were Scott Archer, Lee McCreery, Jerry McNealy, Mike Hostetler, and Paul Murray finished off the top ten. Smart claimed the dash win, while Hostetler won the heat. Nick Grubbs was the night’s top qualifier. Dague also claimed the pursuit win.
Outside polesitter Rich Schweitzer had a backup motor in, as the veteran driver had his main motor expire one week before. Over the early laps, Schweitzer’s backup motor was plenty strong as he pulled away from the remaining field. However, the 2006-champion was a bit too fast and was sent pitside for breaking out of his qualifying time. That gave the lead to last week’s feature winner Doug Decker. With top qualifier Mike Phillips, Jr. in tow, Decker stuck his car in the bottom lane and offered the outside lane to Phillips. Over the remaining laps, Phillips never got the run he needed to pull alongside and finished the race battling Chester McMasters. Following the Classic Pizza/Tusco Net #64 to the win were McMasters, Phillips, Tory Gibbs, and Todd Miller. The rest of the top ten were Jimmy Orr, Dick Aubihl, Brian Wood, Tim Oliver, and Randy Rice. Orr won the dash, while Keith Anderson and Teddy Oliver were heat race winners. Tory Gibbs won the pursuit.
Jason Morgan started out with the early lead in the Trails End Sports Compact feature. Coming through the pack, though, was Gabe Pringle. Pringle, who had earlier this season won the 30-lap Compact special, was on his way to victory, but engine failure ended his night. That put the race in the hands of Kelly McNutt, a former Compact champion. McNutt raced into the lead, while Morgan, Tad Grove, and Brad Henry followed. As the checkered waved, McNutt was crowned the 2007-Mid Season Champion. Following the Route 39 Auto Salvage #36 were Morgan, Grove, Henry, and Don Rufener, Jr. The rest of the top ten were Adam Mishler, Joe Konovsek, Greg Grove, Kevin Renicker, and Bob Passwaters, Jr.
Ryan Tedesco was filling in for A.J. Diano and started eighth in the second Compact feature. Tedesco put his car in the third lane on a couple of different occasions and raced to the front. Tedesco held off challenges from Michael Keefe and Nate Baker for the exciting victory. Bob Passwaters, Sr. finished fourth, while Pat Moore rounded out the top five. The rest of the top ten were Jesse Page, Felicia Myers, Jim Campbell, Kenny Jewell, and Jill Harshey.
Rich Dunlap continued to be strong in the third Compact feature. After his third win of the year, Dunlap said it was time to try and move himself into the second Compact feature where the competition is just a little stronger. Jay Hunt, Kyle Lawson, Dan Konovsek, and Paul Stull picked up top five finishes. T.J. Scranton, Barb Feister, Jaimie Huebner, Jr., Perk Pyle, and Howard Bartholow rounded out the top ten.
Adam Mishler won the fast dash, while Kevin Renicker, Nate Baker, Kyle Lawson, and Perk Pyle were heat race winners. Joe Konovsek won the pursuit and Kelly McNutt set fast time.
Five drivers were trying to keep Don Rufener, Jr. from winning yet another J.D. Byrider Figure 8 feature. Rufener, though, would not let it happen, as he cruised to his sixth win in six tries. Things may have worked out differently had Pringle’s #149 not had a left front tire go down. Pringle did have the lead early in the race. Under the checkered, Rufener was victorious followed by Lennie Orr, Jaimie Huebner, Jr., Kenny Jewell, and Otto Polilli.
Drivers have this Saturday night off at Midvale Speedway but will be back in action on Tuesday night, July 3. It will mark the holiday tradition, as the Main Event Racing Series Super Late Model will run 100 laps of green flag racing. Pure Stocks, Compacts, and Figure 8’s will also be in competition.
Pits open at 3:30, hotlaps begin at 5:00, qualifying will start at 6:30, and racing will begin at 8:00. Admission will be $15 for adults and seniors and $8 for kids 6-15. Pit admission is $25 for members and $30 for non-members.
