After starting the season with new feature winners each week, some of the weekly top competitors may be starting their hot streaks. The Late Models and Sport Stocks saw repeat winners, while the other classes saw first time winners in 2007.
The Advance Auto Parts Late Model main event featured a long side-by-side lead battle for the second week straight. This time it was polesitter Mark Willison trying to win his second feature in-a-row trying to fend off Main Event and Midvale Speedway point leader Ryan Tedesco. Tedesco ran the highline for what seemed to be several laps, while Willison was driving on the edge just to stay alongside. The duo made some slight contact on a few occasions, but was able to keep their cars righted. Finally, Tedesco was able to clear Willison and go on to the victory. Following the Marathon Manufacturing #70 to the impressive win were Willison, John Ambrose, Jr. who joined the battle for several laps, Doug McMillen, and Tom Garbrandt. Other top ten finishers were Joel McKnight, Greg Beule, Rich Marcum, Ed Middaugh, and Bob Eichel. Tedesco and Willison won the heats, while Ambrose set fast time.
The Tusco Net Sport Stock 20-lap feature was on the exciting side as well. After putting on the best feature the previous week, Ron Dague again proved to be the one to beat. Scott Archer jumped out front early, but after an early restart, Dague took the lead. Archer, though, was at the top of his game as well and Dague never pulled away over the final 15 laps. The Daggie’s Auto Service/Tolloti Pipe #75 was followed across the stripe by Archer, Blake Mackey, Virgil Ravenscroft, III, and Kevin McClintock. Jerry McNealy, Dave Mooreland, Jr., Randy Smart, Mike Hostetler, and Lee McCreery finished off the top ten. Dague and Archer won heats, while McClintock set fast time.
The Northern Ohio Legends returned for their second Midvale Speedway event this season. Coming from the second row in a caution plagued feature event, Norton, Ohio driver Fred Davis took the early lead. Following him were son Tim and Jason Knox. Knox had once or twice worked to the inside of the runner up, but cautions negated his runs. At the end of the time shortened event, Fred Davis was victorious. He and his son celebrated their one-two finish in victory lane and the winner trophy was given to a lucky young fan in the stands. Knox finished third, Tom Spisak fourth, and Jeff Huber fifth. The rest of the top ten were Dale Dodge, Jr., Bob Petry, Randy Burns, Michael Copen, and Bob Swann.
In Midvale Speedway Pure Stock action, Doug Decker returned after a hard crash two weeks ago. Decker with a different car, but same motor, worked his way to the front early as many of the frontrunner had problems. The race would prove to be very long for the Tusky, Ohio driver as many cautions and many different drivers would challenge. The most serious challenge may have come from 2006 point champion Rich Schweitzer, but as the veteran was running the outside lane, the motor blew to pieces on the backstretch. Todd Miller, the night’s fast qualifier, was the last to challenge Decker but it wasn’t quite enough. Following the Tusco Net/Superior Welding #64 were Todd Miller, Jimmy Orr, Dick Aubihl, and Chester McMasters. Keith Anderson, Pat Moore, Chuck Sampson, Chris Smith, and Bob Oliver were top ten finishers. Chester McMasters, Dick Aubihl, and Chris Smith claimed heat race wins in the division.
Brad Henry and Jason Morgan were locked into a great side-by-side battle in the Trails End Sports Compact division. However, a caution for a spin put Henry out front for the restart. He would not be challenged again until the final couple of laps when Kelly McNutt was able to run him down. McNutt looked as though he was going to pull off the exciting victory as he had the advantage halfway down the backstretch. However, coming through turn four, the top two made slight contact and Henry edged the #36 at the stripe. The Stocker Trucking/Superior Welding #87 was followed in the top five by McNutt, Jason Morgan, Gabe Pringle, and Ron Myers. Top tens were claimed by Adam Mishler, Tad Grove, Bob Passwaters, Jr., Joe Konovsek, and Don Rufener, Jr.
The second Compact feature win was claimed by Tammy Rufener. For the Uhrichsville, Ohio driver it was her second win of the season. Michael Keefe, Mark Willison, Jr., Kevin Rennicker, and Larry Ennis were in the top five. Nate Baker, Earl Scranton, Justin Rennicker, Bob Passwaters, Sr., and Jamie Leslie had top ten’s.
Rich Dunlap took the lead in the third Compact feature but Felicia Myers tried her best to take the trophy away. However, under the checkered, Dunlap won his first of the season, while Myers, Dan Konovsek, Kyle Lawson, and John Campbell were top five finishers. Ray Hoover, Tammy Ondo, Kenny Jewell, Pat Carnes, and Howard Bartholow were in the top ten.
Compact preliminary victories were claimed by Tad Grove, Jason Grewell, Jamie Leslie, Pat Carnes, and Kenny Jewell. Gabe Pringle was fast qualifier.
In the Senior Flat Kart Oval feature event, Shane Ixos made a charge in the last couple of laps to come from third to first to claim the victory. Rick Minnier, Brandon Shaw, Brad Wheeler, Dan Spilker, and Tom Espinosa were the rest of the finishers.
The coming Saturday night, June 23, Midvale Speedway will be hosting the Mid-Season Championships with double points for all five classes. Late Models, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, Compacts, and Figure 8’s will all be in action. Qualifying is at 4:30, while racing will begin at 6:30. For more information, go to midvalespeedway.com
