Miller Grabs First Win Of ’07 At Midvale
May 12, 2007

Miller Grabs First Win Of ’07 At Midvale
For the second time in three weeks of racing, over 100 drivers culminated at Midvale Speedway for an exciting night of action. The Figure 8 division joined the drivers from the Advance Auto Parts Late Models, Tusco Net Sport Stocks, Midvale Speedway Pure Stocks, and Trails End Sports Compacts.

The 25-lap Late Model feature turned out to be one of the best in recent memory, though the last feature run two weeks ago was also filled with excitement. Doug McMillen and Bob Eichel were the front row starters and McMillen raced into the lead on the opening circuit. McMillen pulled into an early lead as Ryan Tedesco and Mike Miller were working towards the front. Once in second, Tedesco put his car in the outside lane to race with the leader. While never pulling totally alongside, Tedesco pressured McMillen lap-after-lap waiting for a mistake. Unfortunately for Tedesco, the mistake came as McMillen’s car unexpectedly shot up the banking in the first and second turns while Tedesco was on the highside. Flying by to the lowside for a three wide pass was defending point champion Mike Miller. The Clinton, Ohio driver, who had earlier in the night set fast time, came from seventh to first and raced on to the victory. The A-1 Auto & Spring/Bob’s Auto Sales #53 was followed across the stripe by Duane Dunn who ran a consistent race, Tedesco, a strong running Mark Willison, and McMillen who had some handling problems late in the race. A.P. Ren, John Crumrine, Jeff Smith, Bob Eichel, and Dave Watson completed the top ten. It should be noted that the race went flag-to-flag without a caution. McMillen and Schneider were heat race winners, while Jeff Smith won the pursuit.

The Tusco Net Sport Stocks, just like the Late Models, had a sixteen car field for the night of racing. With the large field taking the green, polesitter Virgil Ravenscroft, III raced into the lead. Quickly challenging for the top spot were Ron Dague and Doug McMillen. With McMillen running the low lane and Dague on the highside, both were trying to wrestle the top spot away from Ravenscroft. On lap five, contact took place in turn one sending Dague’s #75 spinning. Ravenscroft was relegated to the tail ending his strong early run. That handed the lead to Dague, who had the top spot on the last completed lap. McMillen was second, while Nick Grubbs was in third. Over the final circuits of the twenty lapper, Dague ran a smooth race to stay in front of McMillen. At the finish, the Tolloti Pipe/Daggie’s Auto Service ride was victorious after a string of bad luck during the first two nights. Following Dague were McMillen, Grubbs, Randy Smart, and Kevin McClintock. Blake Mackey, Scott Archer, Ravenscroft, Bill Weaver, and Mike Hostetler were top ten finishers. McMillen and Weaver were heat winners, while Grubbs claimed the pursuit victory. Randy Smart set fast time.

The Midvale Speedway Pure Stocks had another stellar field of 20+. Polesitter Andy Orr raced into the lead early in the 20-lap event. The Riverside, Ohio driver was looking for his first career feature win, but was black flagged for going under his qualifying time. That handed the lead to Todd Miller. The Sherrodsville, Ohio competitor had a large lead built up as well, but also broke out of his qualifying time. The third driver to lead the pack was Lee McCreery, who was filling in for Keith Anderson. McCreery’s lead was also short lived, as the black flag became tattered from all of its use during the Pure Stock event. Once McCreery pulled pitside, Rich Schweitzer was out front and safe from clocking, as he had qualified in the top four earlier in the night. Schweitzer, driving the Zoar Air Design/Sugarcreek Industries #84 led the caution free race to the finish and picked up his first feature win in 2007. New point leader, Chester McMasters came across the line in second, while Dan Hall, Doug Decker, and Bill Burkholder were top five finishers. Mike Phillips, Jr., Doug Higgins, Dick Aubihl, Brian Wood, and Pat Moore completed the top ten. Phillips, Curtis Collins, and Tory Gibbs won heat races, while Dan Hall claimed the pursuit. McMasters set fast time.

For the fast feature competitors in the Trails End Sports Compacts, it was yet another exciting show. Jason Grewell and Jesse Page made the inversion of 14 and started at the front of the pack. Grewell led early but Jason Morgan and Cliff Cox raced into the top two spots later on. In the final stages, Cox made contact with Morgan racing for the lead and Morgan spun on the front stretch. Cox was sent to the tail, Morgan to the front and the field was bunched up for the final shootout. Morgan, despite heavy cosmetic damage to the rear-end, was able to race to the fast feature victory. Following the Smith’s Auto Sales/Great Trail Care Center #2 to the stripe were Don Rufener, Jr., Grewell, David Breehl, and Joe Konovsek. John McNutt, Brad Henry, Adam Mishler, Jesse Page, and Kelly McNutt rounded out the top ten.

Kenny Ford put a junkyard motor underneath the hood of his #67 and raced to not only a heat win but also a victory in the second Compact feature. After blowing two motors already this season, Ford found that his engine heads were causing some clearance problems, hence the mechanical problems. The Louisville, Ohio driver was chased to the stripe by Larry Ennis, Tammy Rufener, Pat Carnes, and Earl Scranton. Mark Willison, Jr., Mike Gribble, Bob Passwaters, Sr., Kevin Renicker, and Bob Passwaters, Jr. were the rest of the top ten.

The early leader of the third Compact feature was black flagged for going under his time and that handed the lead to Dover, Ohio competitor Rich Dunlap. The second year racer cruised to victory lane for his first feature win. Dan Konovsek, Richard Duvall, Billy Nicholas, and Felicia Myers crossed the stripe in positions second through fifth, but Duvall was dq’ed for not showing up to tech. That handed fifth to Perk Pyle.

Compact preliminary wins were claimed by Don Rufener, Jr., Kenny Ford, Larry Ennis, Kyle Lawson, and Dan Konovsek.

The final feature of the night was the Figure 8 race. Don Rufener, Jr., who has claimed many of the Figure 8 victories over the last few seasons, raced into the early lead and pulled away from the other starters. Following Rufener to his $100 top prize were Otto Polilli, Ryan Kopp, and Joe Elerick.

Racing will continue this coming Saturday night, May 19. The Legend cars and Mini-Stocks will join Late Models, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Compacts in a full night of action. Pit gates will open at 2:45, hotlaps start at 3:15, qualifying at 4:30, and racing at 6:30. Admission prices are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, $6 for kids 6-15, and children 5 and under are free.
