Woodie & McClintock Among Top Winners
April 28, 2007

Woodie & McClintock Among Top Winners
Despite morning rain showers and cold conditions, Midvale Speedway officials decided to go forward with racing this past Saturday night. It turned out to be a great decision, as the drivers put on one of the best side-by-side racing nights in recent history after the skies cleared.

In all, nearly 100 drivers were on hand to compete in the Late Model, Sport Stock, Pure Stock, and Compact classes. The night was capped off with a Figure 8 feature event and an autograph session at intermission.

The first main event of the night was the Trails End Sports Compact feature. Setting the pace at the race’s start was polesitter Bob Passwaters, Jr. On the move, though, using the third lane was Barnhill, Ohio competitor Ron Myers. The Compact division veteran moved into second behind Joe Konovsek with a handful of laps complete. After following the second year driver for several circuits, Myers took over the lead as Konovsek went pitside. Another top division competitor, Tad Grove, hounded Myers both high and low as he looked for a way around. However, at the finish, it was the Legacy Homes/Race Ready Cycles #44 of Myers taking the victory. Grove, Steven Feister, David Breehl, and Kelly McNutt were the other top five finishers. Don Rufener, Jr., Johnny Campbell, A.J. Diano, Bob Passwaters, Jr., and Adam Mishler garnered top ten finishes. The caution free race really set the tone for the other exciting features and less than 8 minutes to complete.

That brought the 25-lap Advance Auto Parts Late Model feature race onto the speedway. On the green, polesitter Bob Schneider, Jr. jumped into the early lead. Dusty Woodie settled into second momentarily, but by lap four the Coshocton, Ohio driver put his car in the outside lane. After a several lap side-by-side lead battle, Woodie was able to edge Schneider at the line before a lap 9 caution. Over the final 16 paces, the race continued to produce some of the best side-by-side Late Model racing the track had seen in a number of years. Greg Beule used the outside lane to move to second, Mike Miller raced in the same groove to take third, and John Ambrose and Ryan Tedesco put their cars on the highside to grab top five runs. At the checkered, the race saw its second mishap, as Mark Willison, Ron Jaberg, Jr., and Darrel Dexter were racing for position trying to work by the lapped car of William Robinson. Robinson was in the outside lane, however, the side-by-side race to the stripe created an incident that severely tore up the #55 of Dexter. It was an unfortunate break, as Dexter had a solid run going. Though the incident put a damper on the great race, Woodie grabbed the Late Model victory. Beule, Miller, Ambrose, and Tedesco were top five finishers. Schneider, Dexter, Jaberg, Willison, and John Crumrine were top ten finishers. Jaberg and Schneider claimed heat wins, while Tedesco set fast time.

In the 20-lap Tusco Net Sport Stock feature, outside polesitter Bill Aubihl raced into an early lead. Via the outside lane, Ron Dague, who had earlier picked up the fast heat win made his way to the front. Kevin McClintock followed Dague into second. On a restart, moments later, Dague moved over and pulled off of the track as a tire reportedly went down. McClintock raced into the lead and left the building as he built up an insurmountable lead. Crossing the line at the finish of the one-caution race was McClintock, Aubihl, Nick Grubbs, Blake Mackey, and Randy Smart. Scott Archer, Mike Hostetler, Anthony Milano, Chris Miller, and Virgil Ravenscroft, III were top ten finishers behind the Glass Lumber Company/Federated Auto Parts #38. Dague and Jerry McNealy were heat race winners. McClintock was also fast qualifier.

The Midvale Speedway Pure Stockers had a full field again for their 20-lap race. Taking the lead at the front of the 20 car feature was Todd Miller. After a lap one restart, Doug Higgins was the man on the move as he raced in the second groove to surpass Miller for the lead. Following him was Chester McMasters in the white and blue #81 and Mike Phillips, Jr. in his #11teen entry. As the three drivers converged, Phillips made contact with the left rear quarter of the leader. Higgins spun but was given his spot back for the restart, as Phillips admitted the accidental contact. After the green waved again, it was McMasters turn to race the leader. However, going into the first corner, McMasters and Higgins made contact. This time, McMasters admitted fault and Higgins again got his spot back again. The Canton, Ohio driver’s final challenger was top qualifier and track record hold Doug Decker. Most thought that Decker would easily race by. However, as the checkered waved, it was the Eadie’s PDQ/Maddog Rugby #13 taking the victory. Decker, Rich Schweitzer, Phillips, and Teddy Oliver were top five finishers. McMasters, Miller, Dick Aubihl, Tory Gibbs, and Andy Orr finished in the top ten. McMasters and Curtis Collins won the heat races.

Tammy Rufener won a race for the ladies of Midvale Speedway. Starting mid-pack, the Compact competitor methodically worked her way to the front. Her Animal Racing/Tusc Tire & Auto #7 was followed by Mike Gribble, Russell Grandison, Michael Keefe, and Jesse Page. Joe Fitch, Larry Ennis, Justin Renicker, Tim Frederick, and Chris Bloom garnered top ten’s.

The final Compact feature had Ryan Kopp taking the win. An earlier electrical problem relegated the Zoarville, Ohio driver to the third feature. Pat Carnes, Tim Rodgers, Paul Stull, and Kyle Lawson finished in the top five. The rest of the top ten were Mark Willison, Jr., Joe Elerick, Richard Duvall, Dan Konovsek, and Rich Dunlap.

Compact preliminary race wins were claimed by Ron Myers, Chris Bloom, Russell Grandison, Justin Renicker, and Pat Carnes. Adam Mishler was the night’s fastest qualifier.

This coming Saturday, May 5 will see a very special night for the Midvale Speedway Pure Stocks and Trails End Sports Compacts. It will be the first of two nights where the two entry level classes are featured throughout the evening. Both divisions will be racing in dashes, heats, pursuits, whips, and features. Other great events like Spectator Drags will also be run and there will be many give-a-ways for the fans.

Grandstand Admission is just $5 for this event. Pit gates will open at 3:00, while hotlaps will begin at 3:30. Qualifying will start at 5:00, and the night’s first green flag will wave at 6:30. For more information on this event, log onto midvalespeedway.com

JUST SOME TIDBITS FROM THE TOWER...
Just want to thank everyone for coming out when many thought the weather would never clear up. The racing was as close and competitive as ever.

Three wide passing in the outside lane in the Compact fast feature by Ron Myers, then the Late Models were putting on a great show, one with only one caution until the last lap accident. An unfortunate break for Darrel Dexter who just can't seem to shake bad racing luck over the last couple of years.

Good show by the Sport Stocks as Kevin McClintock, who started 11th as top qualifier, raced through the pack to grab the feature win. It was another bad break night for Ron Dague who reportedly cut a tire while leading.

Long race for Doug Higgins in the 20-lap Pure Stock feature. Twice, he was spun by the second place car, but at the end he was able to hold off top qualifier, Doug Decker, for the victory.

Only four Figure 8 cars took the green. However, typical of a Figure 8 race, it was exciting and Don Rufener, Jr. took home the $100 top prize. We look forward to more cars for the Figure 8 feature in a couple of weeks.

Drivers were much better tonight responding to their scanners and staying where they need to be for a restart. Also, great patience helped get every race in with the Pure Stock event the only one relatively close to the time limit. The Compact fast feature was run from start to finish in less than 8 minutes. No caution flags.
