Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2025 Race Season |
 | April 21, 2007 |
The 2007 racing season started on a high note this past Saturday, April 21. After a highly successful afternoon car show put on by the Midvale Police Department, Midvale Speedway had over 120 racers in the pits for night #1 of the new campaign. It was one of the biggest car counts in a couple of years.
The Advance Auto Parts Late Models had a great mix of asphalt veterans take the green flag in the 25-lap feature. In all, 17 drivers graced the pits with two scratches for the feature event. When the green flag dropped on the main event field, Bob Schneider, Jr. raced out into the lead. Behind him, the strong group of Mark Willison, Ryan Tedesco, Mike Miller, and John Ambrose were dodging in and out of traffic. Ambrose, Tedesco, and Miller were using the outside lane to do their work as everyone else stayed along the bottom. After several early cautions, the tenth place starter, Ambrose, was able to set up a run on Willison and Schneider to take the race lead. Tedesco followed him to the front with many of Miller’s runs stopped by caution. On lap 18, the caution waved for a Greg Beule spin in turn one. However, officials could see that three lanes of rear end grease made for near un-raceable conditions. After the checking of cars, it was found that Miller was leaking the substance and he was pushed pitside. Unfortunately, the time limit ended the race some seven laps from the finish, but Ambrose had already assumed race control at that time. Following the American Thunder Racing Engines/CTS #24 to the stripe were Willison, Tedesco, Beule, and John Sandquist. A.P. Ren, Dusty Woodie, Bob Eichel, Ron Jaberg, Jr., and Jake Francis finished with top tens. Beule and Francis were credited with heat race wins, while blistered the track in qualifying with a 14.53.
The Legend cars were then brought onto the speedway to run their 20-lap event. Before doing so, the track conditions had to improve to make racing possible. The legends were given plenty of hotlaps before the start of the race to work in the drying agent as best as possible. Though the track was still slick, the field of veterans and many rookies put on one of the best races of the evening with only one caution flag. To no one’s surprise, the man standing in victory lane at the finish was many time Midvale Speedway feature winner Dennis Knox. Larry Young chased him to the stripe, while Jason Knox, Mike Luke, and Jake Francis were top five finishers. Randy Burns, Bryan Casey, Tom Spisak, Bob Gindelsperger, and Stephan Mitcham completed the top ten. Afterwards, the crowd gave a nice ovation for the Legend’s competitors during the post race interview. Both Dennis Knox and nephew Jason were victorious in heat race action.
In Tusco Net Sport Stock action, Bill Aubihl and Scott Archer started at the front for the 20-lap grind. Aubihl, who had just put the finishing touches on his car, raced into the lead. While setting a strong pace, though, the Dover, Ohio veteran was caught going under his qualifying time and was sent to the rear. The driver that was able to get through the pack in the timeliest manner was New Philadelphia, Ohio’s Doug McMillen. The Late Model and Sport Stock veteran raced into the lead, while other top qualifying drivers Kevin McClintock and Randy Smart followed. At the finish, McMillen picked up the first Sport Stock victory of the year in his Parkway Honda/Lee’s Famous Recipe #54. McClintock, Smart, Aubihl, and Archer were top five finishers. Mike Hostetler, Jerry McNealy, Anthony Milano, Nick Grubbs, and Virgil Ravenscroft, III were able to crack the top ten. Nick Grubbs and Bill Aubihl had heat race wins. The night’s fast qualifier was former Pure Stock track champion Randy Smart with a 15.47 lap.
The Midvale Speedway Pure Stock racers ran their first event on racing tires this past Saturday. After many years on street tires, the decision was made in the off-season to try out the 8” Goodyears. The move has seemed to make the cars much more stable and make for fewer cautions. Jimmy Orr, a driver who has made several improvements to his racer in the off-season was the class of the field in the feature event. Working through traffic got him the lead and the win. Following the Mullet sponsored #28 were last year’s champ Rich Schweitzer, Todd Miller, Chester McMasters, and Mike Phillips, Jr. Doug Higgins, Jason Anthony, Keith Anderson, Tim Oliver, and D.J. Litten were top ten finishers. McMasters, Curtis Collins, and Tim Oliver won the heats. Doug Decker set the track record with a 16.70.
In the Trails End Sports Compact fast feature, Eric Feister and Tom Barrett were the front row starters. Feister jumped out front with Barrett closely behind. Later, Barrett was able to take over the lead in his East High Arby’s/Green Ridge Body Shop #157 and pull off a clean sweep of the fast heat and the fast feature. Following the Dennison, Ohio driver to the first victory of the year were Ron Myers, Don Rufener, Jr., Johnny Campbell, and Brad Henry. Kelly McNutt, Cliff Cox, Mike Gribble, Tad Grove, and Joe Konovsek were top ten finishers.
Russell Grandison returned to action with a dominating effort in the second feature. With the Compact field so fast and competitive in week #1, Grandison missed the fast feature, something that he rarely does. The Uhrichsville, Ohio driver started deep in the field and made several moves to take the win. Pat Carnes, Michael Keefe, Tammy Rufener, and Bob Passwaters, Jr. were top five finishers. Tim Frederick, Pat Moore, Ryan Kopp, Mark Fyffe, and Wes Galbraith finished in positions six through ten.
The story of the night was drivers racing from deep in the pack to pick up feature victories. This was no different in the final Compact feature. Nineteen cars took the green flag with Joe Fitch running his newer model Sunfire from the back. At the finish, the Newcomerstown, Ohio driver was followed by Bob Passwaters, Sr., Larry Ennis, Paul Stull, and Kyle Lawson. Dan Konovsek, Richard Duvall, CJ Campbell, Howard Bartholow, and Mark Willison, Jr. picked up top tens.
Compact preliminary wins were claimed by Barrett, Nate Baker, Carnes, Galbraith, and Gary Gibson. Fast time was set by Kelly McNutt’s #36 in his return to racing.
Week #2 will have Late Models, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, Compacts and the first appearance this season for the Wild & Crazy Figure 8's. Bring your favorite racing t-shirt, pictures, or anything that you would like Midvale's stars to sign.
Pit gates will now open at 2:30, hotlaps start at 3:15, qualifying is at 4:30, and racing action will take its first green flag at 6:30. JUST SOME TIDBITS FROM THE TOWER...
In short, the season opener was a huge success. Great Late Model and Sport Stock fields, but we look forward to seeing full features for the two classes next week. Can't say enough about the Legends. They had to run their feature on a slick track, but even with several rookies, only had one caution during the 20-lapper. One thing that definitely needs to be improved upon is the use of scanners by ALL drivers. There were a couple occasions where some drivers lost a couple of spots for a restart because they did not respond to our radio commands. Make sure they are working for this week. If there is something that you would like to see improved upon, please send an email through the website. Thanks...
