Ambrose Claims Fall Classic Main
September 16, 2006

Ambrose Claims Fall Classic Main
Racing for feature wins and extra prize money was fast and furious this past Saturday, September 16 at Midvale Speedway. The 2006 Dover Phila Federal Credit Union Fall Classic had Legends, Late Models, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, Compacts, and Figure 8’s all in action.

Ron Jaberg, Jr. and Doug McMillen started out front for the 35-lap Performance Race Fuels Late Model feature. McMillen raced into the lead via his outside starting position, but exiting turn two he and Jaberg made contact. As McMillen tried to regain control, he and Jaberg bumped briefly again on the backstretch resulting in a McMillen spin. McMillen told track officials that he would go to the back and give Jaberg his spot back. With the green back out, Jaberg’s hood flew off resulting in a caution that sent the leader to the tail. That handed the lead to point champion, Mike Miller. Miller, who had a sub par qualifying lap earlier in the night, started from the third position and was the early favorite to win the 2006-Fall Classic $1,000 prize. Following Miller during the race’s mid stage were Rich Marcum, John Ambrose, and Ryan Tedesco. The excitement picked up at that stage of the race, as Tedesco flew to the outside lane passing the duo and setting his sights on Miller. However, moments later a caution waved relegating Tedesco back to fourth. Again, the night’s top qualifier passed both Ambrose and Marcum to move to second. Ambrose then took the third spot from Marcum. As the lead trio battled it out in exciting action, Tedesco ran to the outside of Miller to apply pressure. However, after a couple of laps, Tedesco slipped up in the first turn, allowing Ambrose to take the runner-up spot. It was then Ambrose’s turn to go for the lead. In a drastic change of events, the yellow waved and Miller was sent to the tail for breaking out of his qualifying time. That gave the lead to Ambrose and put Tedesco in second. Over the last few laps, Ambrose put a little bit of breathing room between himself and the second place car and ran to his first Midvale feature win of the season. Following the First Security/American Thunder #24 were Tedesco, Roger Smith, Bob Sibila, Jr., and Tom Garbrandt. Mark Willison, Miller, Bob Gainer, Paul Adkins, and Michael Scheffer were top ten finishers. Marcum, Sibila, and Garbrandt were heat race winners.

In the 25-lap Legend car feature race, Fred Davis led the early circuits. Davis, who picked up a heat win earlier in the night, built up a decent lead as his son, Tim, and fast qualifier, Larry Young were working towards the front. The younger Davis and Young would swap positions a couple of time while working their way around the race leader. After a couple of restarts, Young had great runs to the inside go awry as Davis was solid in the racetrack’s second groove. After a handful of challenges, Norton, Ohio driver Tim Davis was able to hang on for victory in his Davis Door Company #20. Following him across the stripe were Young, Fred Davis, Bob Petry, and Tom Spisak. Randy Burns, Steve Rector, Bill Richards, Duane Lorens, and Mark Lushes were top ten finishers. Fred Davis and Mike Luke picked up heat race wins.

Mike Hostetler and Mick Macko were the front row starters for the 30-lap Tusco Net Sport Stock feature. Macko, making his first Midvale start, raced into the lead at the get go. In the field, top qualifier Kevin McClintock and second fast qualifier Ron Dague were racing toward the front. Eventually, McClintock took his car to the outside lane and raced into the top spot, while Dague would follow suit. Lap-after-lap in the long race, Dague was glued to the rear bumper of McClintock’s #38. As the laps wore down, Dague had one final run before McClintock pulled away at the finish. The Broadrun Cheesehouse/Blick Tool & Die #38 was followed by Dague, Nick Grubbs, Bill Aubihl, and Mike Hostetler. Mick Macko, Blake Mackey, and Virgil Ravenscroft, III picked up top eight finishes. Mackey won the evening’s heat race.

In Papa John’s Pure Stock action, Tory Gibb’s took over the race lead early in the 25-lap fast feature. The rookie driver had picked up a feature win by disqualification earlier in the 2006-season, but was looking for his first trip to victory lane immediately after a race. Gibbs was solid in the race’s early going, holding a decent lead over the field. However, Chris Mick and Doug Decker were slowly closing in. After a slip-up by the leader in turn four, the second and third place cars caught Gibbs in no time. Over the final circuits, the lead trio battled it out for the Fall Classic championship. Decker had a solid run over the last couple of laps in the outside lane and looked as though he may pull the trophy away from Gibbs. However, coming off of turn four on the final circuit, Gibbs drove hard through the turn to stay alongside, slipped up a bit, the duo rubbed paint and Gibbs came across the line victorious by a small margin. Decker finished a close second, while Mick, Rich Schweitzer, and Doug Higgins were credited with top five’s. Gavin Sekulich, Chuck Elkins, Paul Parson, Pat Moore, and Teddy Oliver finished in the top ten.

In the second Pure Stock feature event, “Ken Feister” led lap after lap as several drivers challenged. As the event came to the finish, The Undertaker was hounding the leader, but the #40 came across the stripe victorious. Pulling into victory lane, the driver stayed inside the car with the window net up and helmet on to take the winning photos. After heading to the pits, it was determined that “Ken Feister” was actually Rob Scott and the win was negated. Feister qualified the car earlier in the night and Scott did not start at the tail of the field in the feature so the win was taken away. That gave “The Undertaker”, a driver from Barberton Speedway, the event win. Following the man from Parts Unknown in his CLS Finishing/1st Class Towing #6 were Dick Aubihl, Dan Hall, Shane Ball, and Bill Burkholder. Charles Ritch, D.J. Litten, Andy Orr, and Brock Burcher were other drivers in the top ten. Gibbs, The Undertaker, and Andy Orr won the heats, while Rich Schweitzer set the Pure Stock fast time.

David Breehl led for many laps in the Trails End Sports fast Compact feature, but point champion Don Rufener, Jr. and top qualifier Ron Myers were moving through the field quickly. As Rufener and Myers applied pressure, Breehl became victim of the breakout rule and was black flagged for going under his qualifying time. With Rufener out front, Myers challenged but never enough to take the lead away. At the checkered, Rufener was followed by Myers, Tad Grove, Jason Morgan, and Randy Cecil. Mike Swaney, Pat Moore, David Breehl, Tammy Rufener, and Nick Grubbs rounded out the top ten.

Jesse Page was the winner in the second Compact feature of the night. Following him in the race that went caution free were Michael Keefe, Jim Campbell, Eric Anderson, and Johnny Campbell. Ryan Kopp, Jason Dotson, Steve Roth, Richard Raupach, and Mark Fyffe were top ten finishers.

Jim DiBona captured the win in the third Compact feature. Pat Carnes, Mike Carnes, Tim Frederick, and Joe Elerick were top five finishers. Richard Duvall, Jake Emerling, Tammy Ondo, Dave Gazey, and Mark Willison, Jr. also finished in the top ten.

In the wild and crazy Compact Figure 8 feature, a harrowing crash at the intersection eliminated usual favorite, Don Rufener, Jr. in a wild rollover. He and Joe Fitch were both done for the night. Back to green, Late Model veteran Ryan Tedesco was on a rail. The New Philadelphia, Ohio driver came up just short in the Late Model feature with a second place finish, but was not to be denied in the Figure 8 race. Following Tedesco to the stripe were Joe Elerick, Ryan Kopp, and Jim Campbell.

The final race of the season will be held on Saturday, October 7 with the Compact/Mini-Stock Nationals. Pure Stocks will also be in action along with Powder Puff Racing.
