Fall Classic Payoff Info Listed At Bottom Of Story

This past Saturday, September 9, the 2006-Season Championship races were held at Midvale Speedway. Champions were crowned in the Performance Race Fuels Late Models, Tusco Net Sport Stocks, Papa John’s Pure Stocks, and Trails End Sports Compacts. It was the final night of point racing of the season, as the 2006 Fall Classic will be run this coming Saturday, September 16.

Duane Dunn and Ed Middaugh brought the strong field of Late Models in for the green during the night’s first feature. However, as the green waved, Middaugh came off of the fourth turn a little too high and clipped the outside retaining wall. Middaugh was able to steer it out of further trouble in turn one, but his night was over. The accident set up a complete restart for Dunn and new outside polesitter Doug McMillen. This time, Dunn raced into the lead with McMillen in tow. Dunn slipped high in the second corner and McMillen raced to the inside. Just as he was taking the lead though, a caution relegated him back to second. Unbelievably, back to green, the same thing would happen to McMillen again. The New Philadelphia, Ohio driver raced to the inside of Dunn on the backstretch only to have the caution put him back in the second spot. The third time, though, turned out to be a charm – kind of. This time, McMillen drove hard into turn number three, the leaders rubbed paint, and Dunn went up the track and came to a stop in turn four. Both were stopped for the spinner-spinnee rule and Dunn told officials to give McMillen his spot and he would drop to the tail. At that point, the Late Models were less than five laps into the race, but McMillen was on his way to victory. As the checkered fell upon the field, the Freeport Press/Parkway Honda #54 garnered the victory, while Mack Gribble, Jr., Mark Willison, Tom Garbrandt, and Greg Beule were top five finishers. The rest of the top ten were Keith Thomas, who was driving Ron Jaberg’s car in the feature, Bob Schneider, Jr., Tony Urdiales, Duane Dunn, and Norm Taylor. Beule and Schneider won the heats, while Ryan Tedesco set fast time. Mike Miller claimed the 2006 point championship.

In Tusco Net Sport Stock action, Virgil Ravenscroft, III and Blake Mackey came off of four to bring the field to green. After a couple of laps of side-by-side racing, Mackey pulled into the lead, via the outside lane. On lap 7, a caution came out for liquid on the track, bunching up the field. The first three competitors at that point were Mackey, Kevin McClintock, and Keith Thomas. After the green waved, McClintock went to the outside of the race leader. The duo raced side-by-side for a few laps until McClintock cleared Mackey heading into turn one. Also after the halfway point, the 2006 point champion, Keith Thomas, was able to work his way into the second spot. As the laps wore down, McClintock cruised to victory, while Thomas, Mackey, Josh Grove, and Doug McMillen completed the race in the top five spots. Also following the Square Deal Auto Parts/Glass Lumber Company #38 were Nick Grubbs, Mike Hostetler, Chris Boone, Ravenscroft, and Ron Dague. Ravenscroft won the heat, while Thomas set fast time.

In the Trails End Sports Compact fast feature, Jason Morgan started up front looking for the Season Championship bragging rights. After leading the first couple of laps, Uhrichsville, Ohio driver Adam Mishler started his trek to the outside lane. Mishler, looking for his first feature win of the season was strong on this night, as his #65 racer gripped the second groove while taking the lead from Morgan. David Breehl raced into the second spot, while Don Rufener, Jr. looked to be the early favorite as he raced from towards the back of the field. Rufener, however, was not able to move past the improving car of Breehl who was following Mishler closely. As the laps wore down, Mishler never made the mistake that Breehl and Rufener were waiting for and went on to his first feature of the season. Following the Bailey’s 4 Star Video/Ember Complete Care #65 were Breehl, Rufener, John McNutt, and Pat Moore. Morgan, Mike Gribble, Mike Pyle, Ron Myers, and Brad Henry were top ten finishers.

Jesse Page raced to the outside of Larry Ennis in the second Compact feature of the night. After a couple of laps, Page was able to clear the #20 and go into the lead. Page, who had won a handful of features coming into the night, was on his way to victory once again and claimed another one of the huge championship trophies. Ennis came home a strong second, while Russell Grandison, Brandon Thomas, and Mike Roth completed the top five. Bob Passwaters, Jr., Bill Wilkin, Ryan Kopp, Jason Anthony, and Joe Konovsek were top ten finishers.

Compact heat race victories were claimed by Tad Grove, Russell Grandison, Earl Scranton, Eric Anderson, and Dave Gazey. Ron Myers set the fast time.

In what was supposed to be the next to last race of the night, unfortunately the Papa John’s Pure Stock feature became the final feature. 2006-point champion Rich Schweitzer, the night’s second fast qualifier, was on the move early and raced into the lead. Teddy Oliver had taken second and top qualifier, Doug Decker moved into third. On a restart just past the halfway mark, the caution came back out for an accident between Brock Burcher and Lou Francis. During that caution, Burcher pulled alongside Francis on the front straightaway, Francis hooked the left rear quarter, and the two spun right in front of the flagstand. Immediately, both drivers started to unbuckle to climb from their cars. At this point, the flagmen went to the track to go on a peace keeping mission. Meanwhile, several unruly fans found it their prerogative to make their way to the speedway surface. A brawl ensued that had officials and officers gaining partial control moments later. Unfortunately, because of the volatile situation, officials and security decided to halt the program at that point. The Pure Stock feature was official with Schweitzer picking up the victory and the point championship. Oliver, Decker, Dick Aubihl, and Tim Oliver were top five finishers. Keith Anderson, Pat Moore, Charles Ritch, Larry Smith, and John Leasure were the rest of the top ten. Decker, Aubihl, and Dan Hall won the heat race events.

Officials apologize to those fans that were waiting to see the final Compact feature of the evening. Long suspensions will be set forth for those who ruined a chance for the race program to be completed. The Compact third feature event has been rescheduled as the first race of the night in this coming Saturday’s Fall Classic. The event will start at 6 PM.

This coming Saturday, September 16 will be the 2006-Fall Classic. This year, the event is being billed as a huge one day show, instead of the previous format of two days. Late Models will be running 35 laps for $1000 to win and $125 to start, Sport Stocks 30 laps for $350 to win and $70 to start, Pure Stocks 25 laps $150 to win and $20 to start, and the Compact main feature will run 20 laps for a $100 top prize and $10 to start. Legend cars and a wild Figure 8 feature paying $300 to the winner will also be held.

Over 300 laps of racing is expected for this one day show with extra money being paid for each finishing position than would be seen on a regular night. Pit gates open at 11:00, practice starts at 12:00, qualifying will start no earlier than 3:00, and racing action will begin at 6:00. Admission prices are $15 for adults and $8 for kids 6-15. Pit admission is $25 for members and $30 for non-members.
