Middaugh and Dague Among Midvale Winners
August 26, 2006

Middaugh and Dague Among Midvale Winners
Mother Nature again smiled on Midvale Speedway’s sizable field of drivers and teams this past Saturday night, August 26. Late Models, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Compacts were joined by another appearance from the Compact Figure 8’s.

In the Performance Race Fuels Late Model division, eighteen drivers took the green flag for the 25-lap feature event. Polesitter Darrel Dexter slid back on the inside lane, while outside polesitter, Ed Middaugh, raced out front looking for his second feature win of the season. Middaugh, who had to be careful not to break out of his qualifying time, did go under once during the first five laps but seemed to slow thereafter. Behind him, side-by-side action had the top two qualifiers, Ryan Tedesco and Mike Miller, making strong runs through the field. After a lap 22 restart, Middaugh again sustained his lead, while Ron Jaberg, Jr. finished off his strong night by holding off Miller for the runner-up spot. Miller, Tedesco, and Mack Gribble, Jr. rounded out the top five behind the Advanced Maintenance #84. Bob Schneider, Jr., Tom Garbrandt, Tony Urdiales, Rich Marcum, and Duane Dunn were top ten finishers. Jaberg and Dexter were heat race victors, while Greg Beule won the pursuit.

In the 20-lap Tusco Net Sport Stock feature, Jerry McNealy took the lead from the green as Ron McBride dropped into second. McBride, driving Gabe Pringle’s #8 car on this night, then lost the second position to Blake Mackey. Moments later, Mackey raced to the inside of McNealy off of the second turn to take the lead. Josh Grove followed him into the second spot and the two pulled away before an early caution. After the restart, Mackey stayed in the lead for a few laps before Grove got a run to the inside. As Grove and Mackey battled, Ron Dague charged inside to make it a three car battle. Dague raced into the lead as Grove took second. As the checkered waved, Dague won his second feature of the season in his Tolloti Pipe/East Of Chicago Pizza #75 while Grove, Kevin McClintock, McBride, and Nick Grubbs finished off the top five. Bill Aubihl, Mike Hostetler, Blake Mackey, Virgil Ravenscroft, III, and McNealy were top ten finishers. Grubbs won the heat, McBride the pursuit, and Randy Smart set fast time in his new ride.

Dick Aubihl led for many laps in the Papa John’s Pure Stock 15-lap feature. As the night’s fastest qualifiers, Doug Decker, Mike Phillips, Jr., and Blake Mackey were mired in heavy traffic at the back, Chester McMasters was on the move. McMasters, who has been victorious once already this season, worked his way past Aubihl to take the lead and the victory. Aubihl crossed the line in second but the finish was taken away due to a carburetor infraction. Finishing second behind the Buddy’s Tire/Louisville Rollatorium #81 was Tim Oliver with his best career finish. Phillips, Decker, and Mackey rounded out the top five. Bill Burkholder, Jimmy Orr, Pat Moore, Matt Wallick, and Doug Higgins finished off the top ten. Teddy Oliver looked strong by winning the fast heat but the car was badly damaged in a grinding feature crash. Bill Burkholder won the second heat and Decker won the pursuit race by working his way from tenth to first.

Eric Feister led early in the Trails End Sports Compact fast feature. Tad Grove was the first division frontrunner to make his way to the front by passing Feister for the lead. Later, point leader, Don Rufener, Jr. moved into second. Over the last couple of laps, Rufener made a great charge to catch the leader. In fact, Rufener ducked to the inside of his closest point challenger on the final circuit, but Grove was able to close the door. Following the J.D. Byrider #3 were Rufener, John McNutt, Chris Bloom, and Feister. Jason Morgan, Nick Grubbs, Johnny Campbell, Brad Henry, and Tom Barrett were top ten finishers.

Perry Nave raced to his first 2006 feature victory in the second Compact feature. Nave was challenged for much of the event by Bob Passwaters, Jr. who came home second. Earl Scranton, Ryan Kopp, and Michael Keefe were the rest of the top five. Tammy Rufener, Jesse Page, Mike Roth, Steve Roth, and Larry Ennis had top ten runs.

Paul Stull came across the stripe as winner in the third Compact feature event. Anthony Nicholas took runner-up honors, while Mark Willison, Jr., was a podium finisher. Bruce Gibson and brother Ben finished off the top five. Rich Dunlap, Howard Bartholow, Allen Andrews, Mike Seese, and Tim Frederick were credited with top tens.

Winning Compact heats were Tad Grove, Tammy Rufener, Perry Nave, Anthony Nicholas, and Tammy Ondo. Grove won the pursuit, while Don Rufener, Jr. set fast time.

Seven starters lined up for the Compact Figure 8 feature. Jim Campbell started up front in the event and immediately pulled away from the rest of the field. Campbell was trying to become the first winner other than Don Rufener, Jr. in the division this year. Rufener, who started last, methodically worked his way toward the front. Rufener took over second in the final stages, but was never able to catch Campbell to remain undefeated. Following Campbell were Rufener, Joe Fitch, Anthony Nicholas, and Mike Seese. D.J. Litten and Paul Stull finished sixth and seventh.

This coming Saturday night, September 2, Midvale Speedway returns to action with the 35-lap Late Model special, plus Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Compacts. At intermission, classic cars from the Uhrichsville McDonald’s car show will take some laps and burn some rubber on the asphalt surface. Heats, the exciting pursuits, and features will all be run. Qualifying will begin at 4:15 and racing is scheduled to start at 6:30. For more information, check us out on the web at midvalespeedway.com
