Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2026 Race Season |
 | August 12, 2006 |
The Main Event Racing Series returned to Midvale Speedway this past Saturday, August 12 for the running of the Carter Lumber 75 presented by Miller Lite. 22 Super Late Models were in the pits during a beautiful day for racing.
In Main Event time trials, Barberton, Ohio driver Don Harvey, Jr. returned to action setting quick time with a 13.67. Harvey had missed the last two events with engine problems. Ryan Tedesco 13.83, John Crumrine 13.84, Rich Rohrer 13.84, and Gary Whipkey 13.85 rounded out the top five. After qualifying, Harvey pulled the eight pill and that put Marcus Malcuit and Tim Ice on the front row for the Main Event.
As the green dropped, Ice looked strong in the outside lane by pulling out to an advantage in turns one and two. By the time he and Malcuit had completed the first lap, Ice had sole possession of the lead spot. Malcuit settled in behind, while Whipkey had moved into third, Crumrine fourth and Rohrer fifth.
Only a couple of cautions waved in the first half of the race. They were for Lancaster, Ohio driver Dean Fusco who was having a rough time maneuvering the 3/10-mile after turning a mid-pack qualifying lap earlier in the day. Fusco was trying to back up his strong run at Lake Erie.
The third caution of the night was a crucial one for the leaders, as Mayo Spence spun in front of the second place car of Malcuit. Malcuit, who was being followed closely by Whipkey, Crumrine, and Rohrer swerved at the last moment to avoid contact. Whipkey, who was shielded by the Malcuit car, locked up the brakes and slid into the side of Spence’s #07. Whipkey’s night was over as was Crumrine’s and Spence’s.
That moved Rohrer to the third spot and Scott Baker back into fourth. Baker had earlier fallen a few positions from where he started on the grid. As the cars ran during green, Ice again had the dominant ride and pulled away from Malcuit. The crowd’s attention had turned to Rohrer trying to get by Malcuit and to top qualifier Don Harvey, Jr. who was making some moves through the field. Harvey slid back on the opening circuits to avoid a spin and had to work diligently to get back into the top five.
As the laps wore down, Malcuit’s car started to fade. With about ten laps to go, Rohrer drove to the inside of Malcuit in the first corner. In a race for real estate, the two made contact with Malcuit’s car spinning. During the caution, Malcuit told the officials to give Rohrer his spot back, as the Strasburg, Ohio driver took the Rick Watson Trucking car to the pits.
With a nine lap shootout setup, the green waved and Rohrer stuck his nose to the inside of Ice on the backstretch. Rohrer, however, couldn’t get in far enough in turn three to make a pass so he fell in line. Over the final eight laps, Ice’s car remained dominant by pulling away from the remaining competitors.
Following the excited Ice across the stripe were Rohrer, Harvey, Tedesco, and Baker. Jimmy Carter rallied for sixth, Bear Schwartz was seventh, while John Sandquist, Doug Sommers, and Norm Taylor completed the top ten.
Ice was elated in victory lane to win for the third time at Midvale in the last few seasons. The Seville, Ohio driver stated that it’s especially fun winning at the track as he always seemed to struggle during the early years of his career.
The Main Event Racing Series will next compete at Barberton Speedway on Friday, August 25 in the raindated event. For more information, go to maineventracingseries.com.
In Tusco Net Sport Stock action, top qualifier, Keith Thomas, did something that no one else had done while rolling the three dice. The Midvale, Ohio driver rolled three #1’s to put himself third in the feature event. That put third fast qualifier, Nick Grubbs, on the pole for the 20-lapper, and the second year competitor jumped into the early lead. Outside pole-sitter, Kevin McClintock fell back a few spots in the outside lane during the early laps as Ron Dague raced with Thomas for the runner-up spot. As the two were racing during the early stages, contact ensued in turn three. After the spin, neither driver admitted fault and both restarted from the rear. It made things exciting, as both worked their way back into the top five by the race’s end. Up front though, Grubbs was able to hold off another strong run by rookie John Sluka. At the finish, the Valley View Logging/Wild West Saloon #24 was followed by Sluka, McClintock, Thomas, and Dague. Josh Grove, Blake Mackey, Kenny Calhoun, Bill Aubihl, and Doug McMillen completed the top ten. McMillen and Grove won the heats, while Grove took the pursuit win.
In Papa John’s Pure Stock action, Doug Decker continued his strong runs by setting fast time in qualifying with a 17.26. Decker then left the speedway to attend a family outing while the heats and pursuits took place. In his absence, Jimmy Orr won the fast heat, while Rob Scott took the second heat and pursuit wins. Decker returned to the speedway for the 15-lap feature event. Starting back in the seventh spot, the Ford Thunderbird methodically worked its way past strong Pure Stock challengers one at a time. At the front of the pack, Dennison’s Jimmy Orr was leading the way in his son’s purple and green #28. Eventually, Decker was able to move by the race leader and go on to his second straight victory of the season. The Twin City Automotive/Union Hospital Pain Management #64 was followed by Orr, Teddy Oliver, Rich Schweitzer, and Chester McMasters. Tory Gibbs, Larry Smith, Rob Scott, Tim Oliver, and Brock Burcher were top ten finishers.
In the fast feature for the Trails End Sports Compacts, second fast qualifier and point leader Don Rufener, Jr. started from the sixth position. However, when Tad Grove took the early lead from Mike Hostetler, it looked as though the win had been decided. Rufener had other things in mind, though, as the Uhrichsville, Ohio driver was working his way toward the front. After moving into second, Rufener ducked low in turn two and worked underneath the car of Grove to take the lead. As the checkered waved, Rufener was victorious for the sixth time this year and was followed by John McNutt, Ron Myers, Grove, and Hostetler. Tom Barrett, Jason Morgan, Johnny Campbell, Brad Henry, and Chris Grubbs picked up top tens.
Mike Pyle worked by the early leaders and ran away with victory in the second Compact feature. After winning, the New Philadelphia, Ohio driver put the nose of his car against the turn four wall and lit up the front tires for a unique front wheel drive burnout. Pyle was followed in the top five by Ryan Kopp, Bob Passwaters, Jr., Earl Scranton, and Michael Keefe. Mike Swaney, Larry Ennis, Joe Fitch, Paul Stull, and Rich Dunlap were top ten finishers.
Tammy Ondo led from start to finish in her Compact feature event. The Canton, Ohio competitor was followed across the line by Howard Bartholow, Richard Hambleton, Mark Willison, Jr., and Jim Campbell. The rough race also had Richard Duvall, Jason Dotson, Dave Gazey, Dean Steer, and Bruce Gibson in the top ten.
Compact heat race victories were claimed by Brad Henry, Mike Pyle, Earl Scranton, Pat Carnes, and Jim Campbell. Eric Feister won the pursuit, while Ron Myers set fast time.
This coming Saturday, August 19, Midvale Speedway returns to action with the always exciting Spectator Drags. Fans can sign up to compete on the speedway in their street legal car. The bracket style event will have in the neighborhood of 20 competitors signing up. Biker’s Night will also be held. Fans riding their motorcycle to the speedway will receive $2 off grandstand admission. Qualifying will be at 4:15, while racing will begin at 6:30. For more information, go to midvalespeedway.com
