Friday, January 23th Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2025 Race Season Miller Takes LM Main; Thomas Claims Another July 29, 2006 A strong field of competitors was in the pits this past Saturday, July 29 at Midvale Speedway. Not only did many of them give rides to the kids at intermission, they put on a great show in each of the four divisions through the heats, pursuits, and the feature events. First up in feature action was the Performance Race Fuels Late Model class. As the front row starters, Ed Middaugh and Tom Garbrandt, raced to the first turn, the duo made contact trying to take command of the competitive field. The spin brought out what was the only caution of the 25-lap event. On the complete restart, Middaugh took command on the inside lane. While out front, the cars of Duane Dunn, Marcus Malcuit, Doug McMillen, and others were single file, bumper-to-bumper behind him. Running the outside lane was point leader Mike Miller. Miller’s run looked to be fading before the lead back slowed down just slightly. It turned out to be enough to allow Miller to slowly moved back toward the front of the pack in the second groove. Position-by-position, Miller eventually took control of the lead and pulled away from the rest of the pack in a thrilling Late Model event. The Kan-Am Tractor and Frame/Sign Central #53 was followed to his fifth feature win by Middaugh, Dunn, Malcuit, and McMillen. Ryan Tedesco, Garbrandt, Mark Willison, Bob Schneider, Jr., and Mack Gribble, Jr., finished off the top ten. Miller and Willison won the heat races, Gribble the pursuit, and McMillen set fast time. In a change of feature order, the Trails End Sports Compact fast feature was brought onto the track next. Each week the drivers of the fast feature put on one of the most exciting shows of the night, so there event was moved up in the line-up. Mike Pyle had the early lead in his Ford Escort, but teammate Mike Hostetler was the first to challenge him. Hostetler was able to race by and pull away from the rest of the field. Behind him, Pyle, Johnny Campbell, Jason Morgan, and John McNutt were dicing for spots. McNutt, one of the faster cars each week, was boxed in for a few laps and it turned out to be helpful as Hostetler picked up his second feature victory of the season. The Haueter Landscaping/Pyle Racing #53 crossed the stripe ahead of Campbell, McNutt, Morgan, and Pyle. Eric Feister, Mike Gribble, Don Rufener, Jr., Ron Myers, and Ryan Kopp finished off the top ten. With that, the Tusco Net Sport Stocks came out for their 20-lap event. Again, a nice field of cars gathered for a 16-car starting field. However, as in past weeks where the car count was up, some rough housing caused many cars to be eliminated from action. Despite that, an exciting pass was setup after a restart. Ron Dague, who led from the get go, had Keith Thomas lined up right behind him. Dague was looking for his second feature win of the year, while Thomas was looking for his sixth in-a-row. Thomas, a driver that likes to use the outside lane, drove high into turn one to setup a lowside turn two pass of Dague. Dague was up just high enough for the change of position. Thomas raced on to the victory, while Dague held off a charging Kevin McClintock for second. Also following the Todd Miller Excavating/Huebner’s Custom Fabrication #34 across the stripe in the top five were Kurt Waller and Jerry McNealy. Top ten finishers were Bob Passwaters, Sr., Bill Aubihl, Nick Grubbs, Will Walker, and Josh Grove. Walker and Aubihl were heat race victors, while Dague won the pursuit event. The night’s top qualifier was McClintock. Rookie driver Andy Orr was the early leader of the 15-lap Papa John’s Pure Stock feature. Veteran driver Teddy Oliver used patience to make his way to the front after being boxed in behind traffic for a few laps. Eventually, Oliver took the lead and looked to have had his bad luck out of the way with the feature victory. However, in post race inspection, the wheelbase on Oliver’s car was found to be too short and the win was taken away. That handed the victory to rookie Tory Gibbs, his first career triumph. Following the Port Washington, Ohio driver were Chester McMasters, Rich Schweitzer, Doug Higgins, and Todd Miller. Orr, Bill Burkholder, Chris Smith, Dick Aubihl, and Brock Burcher had top ten finishes. The point leader, Rich Schweitzer, was victorious in the fast heat and pursuit, while Pat Moore won the second heat. Doug Decker came back after a hard crash to set fast time. Shawanna Myers was strong in the early laps of the second Compact feature. Myers, making her first start of the season, led the first several circuits before Bob Schneider, Jr. was able to take advantage of Myers car hitting the rev limiter early in the straightaways. Schneider raced by while Bob Passwaters, Jr., and Jesse Page followed. From there on, it wasn’t easy for Schneider, who had the duo pressure him all the way to the checkered. For Schneider, it was the first feature win for the weekly Late Model driver who was filling in for Jason Anthony. Passwaters, Page, Tammy Rufener, and Brad Henry rounded out the top five. The rest of the top ten were Michael Keefe, Myers, Cliff Cox, Kenny Jewell, and Larry Ennis finished off the top ten. In the third and final Compact feature event, Steve Roth raced to victory in his orange and white #00. Roth was followed across the finish line by Mark Willison, Jr., Bruce Gibson, Howard Bartholow, and Paul Stull. Pat Carnes, Mike Swaney, Joe Fitch, Mark Fyffe, and Tammy Ondo were top ten finishers. Mike Hostetler, Brad Henry, Bob Passwaters, Jr., Joe Fitch, and Bruce Gibson each picked up the heat wins, while Don Rufener, Jr. won the pursuit race and set fast time. The next event on the Midvale Speedway schedule is Saturday, August 5. It will be a special night honoring many of the drivers that have made Midvale Speedway very successful for over 50 years. 40+ old-timers have expressed their interest in attending the night. A short ceremony to introduce them at intermission will be held and a special souvenir program with pictures and information will be available.
