Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2026 Race Season |
 | July 22, 2006 |
Officials again fought less than favorable weather conditions to complete an exciting night of racing this past Saturday at Midvale Speedway. On the program were the 2nd annual Faster Pastor Race, a 30-lap Pure Stock feature, and racing from all four weekly classes.
The feature program started out with the Performance Race Fuel Late Model 25-lapper. Bob Sibila, Jr. and Kenny Stevens started out front with Stevens taking the early advantage. On the move was New Philadelphia, Ohio’s Ryan Tedesco. Tedesco, who has been strong in his few starts at the track this year, had a sub par qualifying attempt that started him towards the front of the field. Moments after Tedesco passed Stevens for the feature lead, the yellow waved to send Tedesco to the back for breaking out of his qualifying time. With 14 laps remaining, Tedesco had time to make some moves but most thought that coming from the back would be impossible. However, after a late race restart, Tedesco was able to cruise to the inside of race leader Tom Garbrandt and go onto the feature victory. The Marathon Manufacturing #70 was followed by Garbrandt, Stevens, Mike Miller, and Mark Willison. Rounding out the top ten were Bob Schneider, Jr., Duane Dunn, Rich Marcum, Ron Jaberg, Jr., and Sibila. Miller won the fast heat, while Tedesco won the second heat and the pursuit. Jaberg set fast time.
A small field of Tusco Net Sport Stocks gathered for Saturday night’s 20-lap feature. The car count has bounced back and forth all season with many drivers having mechanical problems or crashing out of events. On this night, racing was pretty clean and most cars were able to finish each event. Nick Grubbs, whose runs have been improving over the last few weeks, led for much of the feature event. After challenges from Ron Dague and John Sluka were not enough to ruffle his feathers, point leader and weekly division front runner Keith Thomas challenged to the inside before making the outside lane pass in the late going. For Thomas, the Midvale, Ohio driver raced to his fifth straight victory and his sixth overall this season. The Zifer’s Spaghetti Sauce/Scott Foods #34 was followed by Nick Grubbs, Ron Dague, Kurt Waller, and Chris Kail. Gabe Pringle, John Sluka, Kevin McClintock, and Josh Grove were the other finishers. Kail won the heat, while Grubbs took the pursuit win. Thomas earlier set fast time in qualifying.
The Papa John’s Pure Stocks were slated for a special event 30-lap feature. However, after just two laps were complete, many were already hoping that the checkered would fall already due to numerous early race cautions. As with all feature events, the 30-lapper had a time limit that was close to running out before five laps were complete. Sure enough, with less than ten laps in, the race came to an end as the 35-minute limit had long surpassed. Leading at the time of the final yellow was Larry Smith. However, in post race inspection, Smith’s car was found to be too low on the frame height costing him a chance at victory. That handed the win and the flagman Terry Colletti trophy to Dennison, Ohio driver Jimmy Orr. Following Orr to his first Pure Stock win this season were Doug Higgins, Tory Gibbs, Tim Oliver, and Bill Burkholder. Charles Ritch, Doug Decker, Teddy Oliver, Chester McMasters, and Bruce Greenwood were top ten finishers. Rob Scott and Tim Oliver were the heat race winners, while Todd Miller won the evening’s pursuit. Doug Decker set the fastest time.
After many weeks of strong racing and coming close several times to a feature win, Mike Hostetler was finally able to break into victory lane in the Trails End Sports Compact division. Hostetler, a driver from Tusky, Ohio, held off the likes of Adam Mishler, Mike Gribble, and John McNutt. The win didn’t come easy for the Haueter Landscaping/Wood Motorsports #53. Following him at the finish were Gribble, Mishler, McNutt, and Ron Myers. Ryan Kopp, Jason Morgan, Johnny Campbell, Brad Henry, and Chris Bloom were the rest of the top ten.
Returning to Compact action for the first time in a couple of years was New Philadelphia, Ohio driver David Breehl. He returned in fashion by picking up the second feature of the night. Breehl was followed across the stripe by Mike Pyle, Tammy Rufener, Joe Milburn, and Earl Scranton. Russell Grandison finished sixth, while Jason Anthony, Pat Carnes, Joe Konovsek, and Tye Kelly were top ten finishers.
Michael Keefe was victorious in the third Compact feature. Howard Bartholow, Paul Stull, Nick Grubbs, and Larry Ennis picked up top five’s.
Compact heats were won by Tad Grove, Tom Barrett, Mike Pyle, Pat Carnes, and Michael Keefe. Brad Henry won the pursuit, while Ron Myers set fast time.
One of the most exciting races of the night was the 2nd annual Faster Pastor Race. Eleven area pastors competed for the championship trophy. Exciting three wide racing around lap cars took place over the final two circuits and Reverend Steve Stewart from the Sanctuary Church of God in Louisville, Ohio was the winner in his first race. Glenn Rogers, Dick Marshall, and Derek Bender completed the top four finishers.
Racing will continue this coming Saturday, July 29 with race car rides for kids at intermission. Late Models, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Compacts will all be in action. Qualifying will start at 4:20, while racing will begin at 6:30. For more information, go to midvalespeedway.com
