Rufener Continues Strong Season In Compacts
July 8, 2006

Rufener Continues Strong Season In Compacts
After a very long wet night for the July 3 Main Event race, things were back to normal this past Saturday, July 8 at Midvale Speedway. The four regular divisions were back in action for their full weekly program and the July 15 special family night festivities, including a visit from Randy LaJoie, were announced.

As always, one of the more exciting races of the night came from the Trails End Sports Compact division. In the fast feature, Tammy Rufener and Jesse Page started up front for the 15-lap event. When the green was thrown, Rufener raced into the lead and pulled away momentarily from the field. Meanwhile, her husband, Don Rufener, Jr., was racing quickly from his ninth starting spot. A few laps later, the point leader caught his wife and raced by into the top spot. Also on the move were John McNutt and Tad Grove, other top competitors, but they settled into second and third after catching the leader. At the checkered, Rufener was followed in his Y Tavern/Auto Zone #47 by McNutt, Grove, Ron Myers, and Mike Gribble. Mike Hostetler, Chris Bloom, Tammy Rufener, Brad Henry, and Johnny Campbell finished off the top ten. For Rufener, it was his fourth Compact feature win of the season as he continues to look for the 2006-championship from the top spot.

Jason Anthony picked up the win in the second Compact feature of the night. Pressuring him over the final laps was Kyle Grewell. Grewell was driving for Mike Pyle who was filling in for Jimmy Orr in the Pure Stock class. Bob Passwaters, Jr., Tammy Ondo, and Cliff Cox were the top five finishers. Bruce Gibson, Jim Campbell, Pat Carnes, Pat Moore, and Mark Fyffe were also in the top ten.

Canton, Ohio driver Kenny Jewell came from the back of the field in the third Compact feature to take the victory. Following him were Paul Stull, Michael Keefe, Eric Sell, and Jaimie Huebner, Jr. Mark Willison, Jr., Cody Shuss, Gary Gibson, Billy Nicholas, and Otto Polilli were top ten finishers.

John McNutt, Kyle Grewell, Pat Carnes, Kenny Jewell, and Michael Keefe won the heats, while Tad Grove won the pursuit. Ron Myers set fast time.

Ed Middaugh looked strong during the early races as the Massillon, Ohio driver claimed the heat and pursuit race wins. As the Performance Race Fuel Late Models pulled onto the speedway for their feature, Middaugh was slated for the first row which made him an early favorite to bring home his first 2006-feature victory. Another candidate to win was the current point leader, Mike Miller. Miller struggled a bit in qualifying which put him towards the front for the opening start. However, when the green dropped, Middaugh drove into the lead and Miller slipped back in the outside lane. Lap-after-lap, Miller tried to make the outside lane work to get to the front. However, his car just didn’t have it on this night and Middaugh controlled the top spot as Mark Willison followed. After the halfway mark, the first caution came out for an accident that involved most of the field. It occurred as Willison’s car developed a leak going through turn three. Behind him, Duane Dunn saw the spillage and moved into the second groove to slow. As the other drivers converged, much contact took place claiming Miller, Willison, and Greg Beule. Over the final circuits, the Advanced Maitenance #84 held off Dunn, Tom Garbrandt, Ron Jaberg, Jr., and Bob Schneider, Jr. for the victory. Greg Beule, Miller, Willison, Travis Devore, and Bob Eichel were credited with top tens. Tom Garbrandt set fast time.

Keith Thomas and Kevin McClintock were the top two qualifiers in the Tusco Net Sport Stock divisions. Again, it would be a race to see who got to the front first in the 20-lap feature. For the second night in a row, it was Thomas who picked the right lanes early and took command from Roger Butler to lead the field. Later, McClintock raced his way into second but could not run down the leader. Following Thomas’s Musick & Myer’s Heating & Cooling/Huebner’s Custom Fabrication #34 were McClintock, Butler, Nick Grubbs, and Virgil Ravenscroft, III. Bob Passwaters, Sr., Kurt Waller, Chris Kail, Gabe Pringle, and Jerry McNealy were the rest of the top ten. Thomas won the heat, while Butler won the pursuit.

Mike Pyle, racing in his first Pure Stock feature, was the early leader of the 15-lap event. On a lap 3 restart, Blake Mackey was able to move into the lead for several laps before Doug Decker, the night’s top qualifier flew by in the outside lane. Once out front, Decker was able to race to a dominating victory. The Dr. Andrew Luxenburg Accupuncture/Twin City NAPA #64 was followed by Tory Gibbs with his career best run, Larry Smith, Rob Scott, and Doug Higgins. Mike Pyle, Dick Aubihl, Curtis Collins, Chris Smith, and Tim Oliver picked up top ten finishes. Teddy Oliver, Tim Oliver, and Chris Smith were heat race winners. Decker won the pursuit.

Don Rufener, Jr. continued his strong night in the last race of the evening with a win in a very exciting Compact Figure 8 feature. After several close calls at the intersection, Rufener took the checkered for his third straight Figure 8 win to start the season. Tim Frederick, Otto Polilli, Cody Shuss, and Bruce Gibson were the top five finishers.

The next event on the 2006-schedule will be the just recently announced Grove’s Towing/Hartzler’s Quality Housing Family Night coming up on July 15. 2-Time NASCAR Busch Series Champion Randy LaJoie will be competing in the Late Model division. In addition to the special guest, pit tours for parents and kids will take place from 5:30-6:15, face painting, animal balloons, and a Frisbee toss will be held. In addition, there will be a kid’s bicycle give-a-way for children 12 and under. A good number of new bikes will be distributed thanks to generous donations this past Saturday. At intermission, a motorcycle thrill show will excite the fans in attendance. Legends will join the regular four divisions. Admission prices are regular. Qualifying starts at 4:15, while racing will begin at 6:30. For more information, go to midvalespeedway.com
