Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2026 Race Season |
 | June 17, 2006 |
It was a night of firsts for drivers at Midvale Speedway this past Saturday, June 17. Many drivers picked up their first career wins, while others picked up their first wins of 2006.
In Performance Race Fuels Late Model competition, Ed Middaugh and Mark Willison brought their fellow drivers in for the green. As the two raced off of the fourth turn, contact ensued and nearly every driver in the field was involved to some extent. Many drivers slid through the turn one infield, one of those being the outside polesitter. Willison slammed into one of the tire barriers and pushed it onto the raceway. Point leader Mike Miller had damage that caused him to retire from the event. Willison restarted at the rear, after a pitstop to replace a spring. With the race officially underway, Middaugh raced into the lead and started to pull away from the field. Just several laps into the race, Middaugh was caught breaking out of his qualifying time sending the leader to the rear. That moved Duane Dunn into the top spot with Ryan Tedesco following. As those cars were racing for the lead, Tedesco got a run to the inside coming off of the second turn. As the cars raced into three, Dunn and Tedesco both tried racing for the same lane causing a spin. That gave Bob Schneider, Jr. the top spot. For the second time this season, Schneider looked to be on his way to his first career Late Model victory. However, while racing off of the second turn, Schneider’s car spun around in front of the field relegating him to the tail. That moved none other than Mark Willison back into the lead. Willison finally proved to be the leader to stay at the front of the pack to the finish. For the Minerva, Ohio driver, it was win #1 of the 2006 season in his Shirley’s Powder Coating/Kermit’s Sandblasting #18. Following him to the exciting victory were Doug McMillen who fended off challenges from Tedesco. Tom Garbrandt came home in the fourth spot, while Middaugh finished fifth. Schneider, John Sandquist, Dunn, Bob Eichel, and Dan Stemple rounded out the top ten. Garbrandt won the fast heat, while Middaugh took the second heat and the pursuit. Mike Miller set fast time.
The Tusco Net Sport Stock 20-lap feature turned out to be another good old fashioned slugfest. John Sluka and Randy Smart, both Sport Stock rookies, led the competitive field of cars in for the green. Sluka jumped into the lead, while Smart faded behind him. Over the early laps, damage was done to the cars of point leader Kevin McClintock and Mike Ravenscroft as the latter got caught in a racecar sandwich. Both drivers went to the pits for repairs, while only McClintock was able to continue. As Sluka led, Smart, Keith Thomas, and Ron Dague were putting on a show for the second spot. Lap-after-lap the three drivers jostled trying to get closer to the race leader. With only one circuit to go and Sluka on his way to victory, the cars of Smart and Dague collided in the second turn. The Dague spin brought out the yellow flag. Unfortunately for Sluka, the caution put Thomas on his rear bumper. As the cars raced under the green-white-checkered, Thomas had a decent run on the final lap, but Sluka did not open up the bottom lane enough for Thomas to race by. Coming to the checkered, Sluka finished off his perfect night with his first career feature victory. Earlier, Sluka had won the second heat for his first career win and also picked up the pursuit victory. Following the Fast Mass Racing/D&B Machine #21 were Thomas, Bill Aubihl, Randy Smart, and Bob Passwaters, Sr. Dague, Jerry McNealy, McClintock, Chris Kail, and Nick Grubbs finished off the top ten. Thomas was the fast heat race winner.
Rookie Tory Gibbs led in the early going of the Papa John’s Pure Stock 15-lap feature. Racing was exciting mid-pack as Rich Schweitzer, Teddy Oliver, and Doug Decker were dicing their ways through the huge field of cars. After a couple of cautions, Oliver was able to race around Gibbs for the top position. However, during a later caution, Oliver retired to the pits with a flat left rear tire. With Oliver eliminated with more bad luck, Schweitzer, the current point leader, had to fend off Decker, the night’s top qualifier. As the laps wore down, Decker raced hard in the outside lane and eventually was able to squeak ahead at the checkered for his first 2006 victory. Following the Dr. Andrew Luxenburg Acupuncture/Union Hospital Pain Management #64 were Schweitzer, Chester McMasters who had a great run, Gibbs, and Blake Mackey. Keith Anderson, Brian Wood, Luther Chambers, Rob Scott, and Dick Aubihl finished off the top ten. Schweitzer won the fast heat and the pursuit, while Brian Wood and Doug Higgins were other heat winners.
Mike Gribble started his night with his best career qualifying time in the Compact division. After a favorable dice roll put him on the pole for the 15-lap fast feature, Gribble raced into a commanding lead over the other battling competitors. In another race that saw no cautions, the Legacy Homes/Gribble Jr. & Son Trucking #11 crossed the stripe with his first career fast Compact feature win. Several car lengths back was point leader Don Rufener, Jr. who raced strong through the field. Tad Grove came home third, John McNutt fourth, and Mike Hostetler fifth. The rest of the top ten were Jason Morgan, Johnny Campbell, Ron Myers, Steven Feister, and Brad Henry.
In feature #2, Eric Feister had an extremely good run despite a frustrating engine miss. Early in the race, Feister was on a rail in the outside lane but got shuffled momentarily out of contention. Later, though, Feister caught the leaders and raced by for his first victory of 2006. Tye Kelly, Jason Anthony, Tammy Rufener, and Mike Roth were top five finishers. Jim Campbell, Steve Roth, Bob Passwaters, Jr., Ryan Kopp, and Kenny Jewell were also in the top ten.
First year driver Joe Konovsek raced to his first career victory in the third Compact feature of the night. Joe Elerick, Tammy Ondo, Howard Bartholow, and Rich Dunlap were the rest of the top five.
Heat wins in Compact race went to Mike Gribble, Kenny Jewell, Earl Scranton, Joe Konovsek, and Pat Carnes. Tad Grove took the pursuit and Ron Myers set fast time.
The 12th night of the racing season will take place this coming Saturday, June 24 with the 2006 Mid-Season Championships. Drivers in Late Models, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Compacts will all race for extra large trophies and bragging rights at the year’s midpoint. Qualifying starts at 4:15 and racing will begin at 6:30. Admission prices are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors 62+, $6 for kids 6-15, and children five and under are free.
