 An excellent field of USA Modifieds was on hand this past Saturday, June 10 at Midvale Speedway. 27 drivers were in the pits, while 25 took the green in the Demon Carb 100.
Baldy Baker, Jr. started on the pole and held off challenges from Doug Meyer and Rodney Scott for the victory. It was a night that saw drivers with previous Midvale experience dominate in victories, as Meyer won the dash, Glen Jewell won the heat, and John Wilson won the last chance. New Castle, Indiana driver Rodney Scott was the most impressive first-timer as he really challenged to the outside of Meyer on several occasions.
For Baker, the flag-to-flag victory was his first USA Modified career win. The current point leader at Mansfield is sponsored by Mrs. Yoder’s Kitchen and Mount Eaton Hardware. Meyer, Scott, Brad Springer, and Tim Burkett completed the top five. The rest of the top ten were Bob Curry, Scott Coe, T.J. Stineman, Brian Nester, and Jeff Smith.
In regular division action, Josh Grove picked up an impressive Tusco Net Sport Stock victory over top qualifier, Keith Thomas. The Hartzler Quality Housing/Grove Medical #4 was followed by Thomas, Nick Grubbs, Kurt Waller, and Bill Aubihl.
In Pure Stock action, Larry Smith, the current point runner-up credited Ron Courtney’s setup to pick-up his first feature win of the year. Rich Schweitzer came home a close second, while Doug Decker, Chester McMasters, and Blake Mackey finished off the top five.
In the fast Compact feature, Tad Grove was victorious for the second time in a row. John McNutt, Don Rufener, Jr., Adam Mishler, and Jason Morgan were top five finishers.
Jesse Page ran down Bob Passwaters, Jr. in the last couple of laps of the second Compact feature and raced by to the outside for the feature victory. Jason Anthony came home third, Earl Scranton fourth, and Mike Gribble was fifth.
Michael Keefe was victorious in feature action for the first time in the third main. Kenny Jewell, Tammy Ondo, Joe Fitch, and Mark Willison, Jr. followed the Massillon, Ohio driver to the checkered.
Don Rufener, Jr. won the Compact Figure 8 race.
Racing continues this coming Saturday, June 17 as the Late Models return to action with Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Compacts also on the card. At intermission, spectator drags will be held for the third time this season. The first two rounds have been extremely exciting this year. Qualifying starts at 4:20, while racing will begin at 6:30.
