Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2026 Race Season |
 | June 3, 2006 |
Drivers, officials, and fans were a lucky group at Midvale Speedway this past Saturday, June 3 at Midvale Speedway. Somehow, the night’s race program was completed despite heavy rainfall that fell in surrounding areas all afternoon long. Legend cars joined the regular four classes for the evening festivities.
Bob Schneider, Jr.’s night started on a bad note, as his Performance Race Fuel Late Model racer had transmission problems in hotlaps. However, the Canton, Ohio driver jumped behind the wheel of the car that Greg Beule normally pilots and put his #17 on the side to garner championship points. In his first ever race with that car, Schneider used the outside lane to race around Mark Willison for the heat race victory. Later, in feature competition, the veteran driver was setting a quick pace at the front of the 25-lapper and looked to be on his way to victory. However, with only nine circuits to go, the yellow flag flew and Schneider was relegated to the tail for going under his qualifying time. That handed the lead over to point leader Mike Miller who had raced from deep in the field and put Ryan Tedesco in the second spot. The two drivers, who both put on a good show coming from near the back, ran nose-to-tail until Tedesco experienced distributor problems that ended his night. At the checkers, Clinton, Ohio driver Mike Miller crossed the stripe for his second straight victory. Following the A-1 Auto & Spring/Allied Auto #53 were Jimmy Carter, Doug McMillen, Tom Garbrandt, and Schneider. The rest of the top ten finishers were Mark Willison, Ron Jaberg, Jr., Mike Dawson, Tedesco, and Dan Stemple. Willison won the pursuit, while Tedesco set fast time.
The Tusco Net Sport Stock feature again turned out to be exciting over the early circuits. With Paul Murray and Nick Grubbs racing out front, Midvale, Ohio driver Keith Thomas made a thread the needle move to race out front in the 20-lapper. Ron Dague, who was caught in the traffic for several laps, finally was able to move into second, but as the laps wore down Thomas was on his way to victory #1 of the 2006-racing season. Thomas, coming off a year in which he won the last seven features of the season, has been close several times this year, but the close competition had been able to keep him out of victory lane. Thomas, trying to start a new streak in his Renner & Daughter Concrete Construction/D&B Machine #34 was followed by Dague, Grubbs, Kevin McClintock, and Murray. Gabe Pringle, Kurt Waller, John Sluka, and Mike Ravenscroft completed the top finishers. Kevin McClintock was strong in preliminary action sweeping the heat and pursuit.
The Northern Ohio Legend car class was on hand for the second time this season. The first time around, Tallmadge, Ohio driver Dennis Knox came in with a four race win streak to start their season. He left the speedway later that night with his fifth win in five tries. Since then, Knox has been beaten twice - once at Painesville Speedway by Jake Francis and once at Lorain Speedway by Fred Davis. On this night, Knox started on the right foot by setting the fast time. During the feature race, though, Francis was out front and leading the 20-lapper trying to again rain on Knox’s parade. Quickly, though, Knox was able to pick off driver-by-driver from his eighth place starting position and race to the top spot. Over the final circuits, Knox was able to hold off his nephew, Jason, as well as Francis, Tom Spisak, and Bryan Casey. Shawn Szep, Billy Richards, Randy Burns, Steve Rector, and Bob Petry completed the top ten. Jeff Burton and Randy Burns won the heats.
After race leaders Dick Aubihl and John Leasure collided while racing in front of the field, Canton, Ohio driver Larry Smith looked to have a good shot at his first victory of the season. However, this night was New Philadelphia, Ohio’s Rich Schweitzer’s as he had earlier set the second fast time and come from the back to win the pursuit race. Schweitzer diced his way through the feature field and worked by Smith on a restart to pace the pack. The Sugarcreek Industries/Zoar Air Design #84 was followed at the finish by Smith, Doug Decker, Mike Phillips, Jr., and Jimmy Orr. Also following Schweitzer to his first feature win this season were Keith Anderson, Tory Gibbs, Dick Aubihl, Chester McMasters, and Charles Ritch. Phillips and Tim Oliver won the heats, while Randy Smart set fast time.
Don Rufener, Jr. took the lead in the fast Compact feature just in time to see a discrepancy between his wife Tammy and fellow competitor Tom Barrett on the front straightaway. Rufener was able to maintain his composure to go on to his second straight Compact feature win and his third of the season after the two frustrated drivers were sent pitside. Rufener extended his point lead, while John McNutt had a strong run for second, Jason Morgan came home third, Mike Hostetler fourth, and Tad Grove rounded out the top five. Also following the Auto Zone/Animal Racing #47 were Ron Myers, Johnny Campbell, Troy McMath, Steven Feister, and Mike Gribble.
Jesse Page ran down the early race leader and led the field to his third victory of the season. Steve Roth, Brad Henry, Kenny Jewell, and Jill Harshey were top five finishers. Jason Anthony, C.J. Campbell, Pat Carnes, Ryan Kopp, and Mike Swaney were other top ten competitors.
Paul Stull picked up a well deserved third feature victory. He was followed across the line by Howard Bartholow, Ben Gibson, Mark Willison, Jr., and Fireball Murray.
Don Rufener, Jr., Ryan Kopp, Pat Carnes, and Ben Gibson won the heats, while Jason Morgan took the pursuit. Ron Myers set fast time.
