Miller Extends Point Lead With LM Win
May 27, 2006

Miller Extends Point Lead With LM Win
Warmer weather finally greeted fans at Midvale Speedway this past Saturday, May 27. Late Models, Pure Stocks, and Compacts all ran a regular program of heats, pursuits, and features, while the Sport Stock competitors raced in a special 30-lapper.

After a night of exciting heats and pursuits, the Performance Race Fuels Late Models entered the speedway for their 25-lap feature. With a few of the division regulars starting to prepare for Monday’s Main Event race at Lorain, the field of A-division competitors was a bit small. However, racing as usual was competitive as Mark Willison raced into the early lead. The second year Late Model driver was looking for his first 2006 win but so was point leader Mike Miller. During the early circuits, Miller put his blue #53 racer in the outside lane trying to work past Ed Middaugh for the runner-up position. As his car slid back a bit, Doug McMillen joined the action and at one point moved alongside Miller trying to take third. With Miller desperately wanting the victory, the Clinton, Ohio driver decided it was go-time and made the outside lane work to race out front. As the laps wore down, only one caution was brought out for a minor spin. It was the first caution in the last four Late Model features. When the checkered waved at the completion of the 25th circuit, Miller was victorious in his Allied Auto/Mr. Trailer Sales #53. Willison came home a strong second, while Middaugh, McMillen, and Dave Watson completed the top five. The rest of the top ten were Tom Garbrandt, Greg Beule, Bob Schneider, Jr., A.P. Ren, and Bob Eichel. Miller took the fast heat win, while Willison won the second heat and the pursuit. Garbrandt took top honors in qualifying.

Despite a low car count of Tusco Net Sport Stock competitors, officials decided to go full speed ahead with the 30-lap special. Attrition has once again played a huge factor in the division car count this season and several other different cars should be on the way. Dover, Ohio driver Josh Grove picked up his first feature win of the season a couple of weeks ago and he was able to race his Hartzler’s Quality Housing/Grove Home Medical into the early race lead. Weekly top competitors, Ron Dague, Keith Thomas, and Kevin McClintock, other favorites to compete for the 30-lap win, moved into second through fourth to put the top drivers bumper-to-bumper. As Thomas followed Dague closely for the second spot, the two made contact in turn four, sending Dague spinning into the infield. Thomas admitted fault under the caution to allow the runner-up his spot back. With the green back out and Thomas making his way back through the field, Dague made a run to the outside of Grove for the lead. As his car slid up the banking in turn two, McClintock raced by for second, but while Thomas was going underneath for third, Dague’s car slid sideways and the two drivers again brought out the yellow. This time, Dague went to the back with Thomas having about four laps to make a run at the top two. Immediately back to green, Thomas flew by McClintock on the inside lane. However, over the final circuits, Thomas ran out of time as Grove turned out to be too strong and went on to pick up his second feature win of the season. Thomas, Dague, McClintock, and Nick Grubbs finished off the top five. John Sluka, Paul Murray, and Terry Colletti rounded out the finishers. Grove took the heat win, while Thomas was the pursuit winner and top qualifier.

With a strong field of Papa John’s Pure Stocks on hand, the division was split into a fast and a slow feature. With action really starting to heat up and many drivers improving on their setups trying to close the gap between Randy Smart and themselves, twelve cars took the green in the A-feature. With the race filled with a ton of side-by-side action, only one major caution took place early in the race for Teddy Oliver and Blake Mackey. Back to green, Rich Schweitzer and Doug Decker were putting on a heck of a show for the lead. As the side-by-side battle continued, top qualifier for the seventh straight week this season, Randy Smart, made a three wide pass for the lead in turn three. As Smart moved into the top spot, Mike Phillips, Jr. took second and Decker dropped to third. The battle between Phillips and Decker turned out to be very important, as on the final circuit, Smart pulled to the pit area after receiving the white flag. As the new top two raced down the backstretch, Decker looked good enough for the victory. However, his blue #64 slid just a bit sideways in the second groove and Phillips edged ahead for his first career Pure Stock feature win. The win was well deserved as hard work went into the car the last few weeks to make it raceable again after a devastating heat race crash a few weeks ago. Following the New Philadelphia driver across the stripe were Decker, Schweitzer, Joe Oliver, and Chester McMasters. Lee McCreery had a strong run for sixth, Jimmy Orr came home seventh, while Charlie Childress, Tory Gibbs, and Smart finished the top ten.

In the second Pure Stock feature, John Leasure raced out front early and never looked back to pick up his first 2006-feature victory. After several weeks of back luck, the Canton, Ohio driver had a turnaround of fortunes and despite a few battle scars on old turned new racecar this week. The Canton Auto Sales & Salvage/Mike Tucke Trucking #12 was followed by Doug Higgins, Larry Smith, Chris Miller, and Dick Aubihl in the official rundown. Teddy Oliver, Blake Mackey, and John Leasure won the heats, while Randy Smart set fast time and won the pursuit for the second week in a row.

Tad Grove was in a groove over the first fourteen paces in the Trails End Sports Compact fast feature. As Troy McMath, Eric Anderson, Ron Myers, John McNutt, and Don Rufener, Jr. swapped positions behind him, Grove looked destined to win his second feature this year. However, on the final circuit, the car started to falter in the low lane and Rufener, the point leader, took advantage in groove number two to race across the stripe in the stunning victory. It was later found the Grove had a right front wheel coming apart to cause his victory to vanish. The Y Tavern/Dale Royer #47 was followed across the stripe by Grove, Myers, McMath, and Anderson who recovered from an early race spin for a top five. Adam Misher, Tom Barrett, Steven Feister, Mike Hostetler, and Mike Pyle were other top ten finishers.

Tammy Rufener, trying not to be outdone by here husband, cruised into the early lead in the second Compact feature. As the laps wore down, only one challenger had anything for Rufener and it was the car of Mike Gribble. Gribble, who was driving a team car to Ron Myers on this night, put on a great show for the third heat race win earlier in the evening and tried his hardest to work around Rufener in the feature. However, as the checkered flew, Tammy made it a Rufener clean sweep of the first two Compact features. Gribble, Kenny Jewell, Ryan Kopp, and Earl Scranton were top five finishers. Jill Harshey, C.J. Campbell, Steve Roth, Joe Konovsek, and Brad Hentry picked up top ten finishes.

Anthony Nicholas came home first in the third Compact feature for his first career victory. Nicholas was followed by Fireball Murray, Bruce Gibson, Mark Willison, Jr., and Jaimie Huebner.

Mike Hostetler, Mike Pyle, Mike Gribble, Pat Carnes, and Jaimie Huebner won the heats, Tom Barrett took the pursuit, and Ron Myers set fast time.

This coming Saturday night, June 3, five divisions of action will be held, as the Legend cars will make their second appearance this season. The night will also feature a small halftime program of Redneck games for the fourth annual Redneck night at the races. Qualifying starts at 4:00, while the racing will take its first green flag at 6:30. For more information, go to www.midvalespeedway.com.
