2026 Race Season
Knox & McMillen Among Main Winners
May 6, 2006

Knox & McMillen Among Main Winners
Five divisions of racing were on the card this past Saturday night, May 6 at Midvale Speedway. The night saw cool conditions, another flag-to-flag Late Model feature, and slick conditions for the final five features.

The first feature of the night was the Northern Ohio Legends 20 lapper. Tom Spisak and Bryan Casey brought the field down for the race’s first green flag with Spisak moving into the lead. After a couple of circuits, though, Jason Knox raced out front to pace the field. Meanwhile, all eyes were on the night’s fastest qualifier, Dennis Knox. The Tallmadge, Ohio driver was looking for his fifth win of the season in his five starts. Knox came from his eighth starting position to move into second in the early going. After running down his nephew, he shot by on the inside to take the lead and go on to his fifth victory of the season. Jason Knox finished second, Spisak third, Jake Francis fourth, and Steve Rector came home fifth. The rest of the top ten were Randy Burns, Bob Petry, Jeff Burton, Bob Gindlesperger, Jr., and John Burns. Jason Knox and Shawn Szep won the heats, while Dennis Knox also set fast time.

In Performance Race Fuels Late Model action, Doug McMillen and Tom Garbrandt started on the first row for the 25-lapper as a small dice roll inverted a number of six qualifiers earlier in the night. When the race started, McMillen moved into lead and looked to be settling in for his first Late Model feature win of the year. However, top qualifier and point leader Mike Miller and seventh fast qualifier, Ryan Tedesco, who started seventh after missing the inversion, were moving up in the outside lane. After Miller moved into the top few spots, he settled into the inside lane. That gave Tedesco the opening he needed to race on the highside of Miller, Garbrandt, and Jaberg to fly into the second spot. Miller would later follow. Tedesco then ran down the race leader only to come up short after overheating the brakes during his strong run. With the cars crossing the stripe in an exciting caution free race, McMillen picked up his first victory in Late Model action and his second overall this season after taking a Sport Stock win in week two. Tedesco, Miller, Jaberg, and Garbrandt finished off the top five. Duane Dunn, Bob Schneider, Jr., Ed Middaugh, Jimmy Carter, and John Sandquist rounded out the top ten. McMillen completed his clean sweep by winning the fast heat, while Mark Willison took the second heat race win.

That brought the Tusco Net Sport Stocks onto the track. Chris Kail and Josh Grove were front row starters in the 20-lap main event but it didn’t take long for problems to take place mid-pack. As cars entered turn two on the first circuit, Will Walker and Kurt Waller ended up locked up in an accident towards the middle of the turns. Walker’s car was leaking oil from the accident and the puddle turned out be a nuisance the rest of the evening. After officials put drying agent on the spot, the synthetic oil worked back to the surface. Again, the track crew tried their best to remedy the problem only to fall short again as the Sport Stock drivers could not race on the slick conditions. After a long delay, the Sport Stocks were sent pitside to allow for the Compact features to run the track in.

The fast feature for the Trails End Sports Compacts was exciting as always. Steven Feister and Jimmy Orr started up front for the 15-lap grind and Feister took the lead for the second week straight. Moving quickly toward the front was Neil Rolli as he raced in the outside lane. As Rolli was making his move on Feister, Blake Mackey darted between the two cars to take second. A lap or two later, Mackey was out front after edging past the early leader. As the laps were clicked off, Mackey had extended his lead to several car lengths. However, Ron Myers, the night’s top qualifier and track record holder moved into second. Despite the fast Myers in second, Mackey looked to be en route to his first Compact feature win, but a lap 12 caution changed the scenario. As the green waved for a three lap shootout, Mackey slid sideways in turn one and Myers took the opportunity to race alongside. Racing for a lap, the drivers remained side-by-side before Myers was able to move out front. Crossing the stripe at Terry Colletti’s checkered flag, Myers picked up his first feature victory of the year in his Legacy Homes/legacyhomes.com #44. Don Rufener, Jr. picked up another strong finish for second, while Mackey, Troy McMath, and John McNutt completed the top five. Steven Feister, Jimmy Orr, Jason Morgan, Mike Hostetler, and Neil Rolli completed the top ten.

Jesse Page used a late race pass of Mike Roth to pick up his second feature win of the season. Roth came home a close second, while Tammy Rufener, Mike Gribble, and Kenny Jewell were top five finishers. Jason Anthony, Bob Passwaters, Jr., Paul Stull, Ryan Kopp, and Earl Scranton completed the top ten.

Jaimie Huebner is celebrating his second feature win after holding off Mark Willison, Jr. in the third Compact feature. Willison came home second, Bruce Gibson third, Mickey Green fourth, and Howard Bartholow fifth. Rounding out the top ten were Richard Duvall, Joe Fitch, Kelly Wissman, Jay Hunt, and Tammy Ondo.

Compact preliminary wins went to Don Rufener, Jr., Tammy Rufener, Kenny Jewell, Cody Shuss, and Joe Fitch. Ron Myers track record lap was a 17.90.

With that, the track conditions had improved just enough to allow for the Sport Stocks to re-enter the track. Josh Grove raced into the early lead, as Chris Kail dropped into second. Looking for his second feature win of the night, Doug McMillen was later able to get past Kail for the runner-up position, while Keith Thomas followed into the third spot. Grove, however, had built up a big lead to pick up the dominating feature win. All-in-all, the Sport Stock drivers ran a pretty clean race despite the slick conditions of turn two. Following the Hartzler’s Quality Housing/J.D. Byrider #4 of Grove were McMillen, Thomas, Kail, and Ron Dague. Kevin McClintock, Bill Aubihl, Nick Grubbs, John Sluka, and Bob Passwaters, Sr. finished off the top ten. Dague and Grubbs raced to heat victories, while Thomas set fast time for the second straight week.

With Chester McMasters leading the Papa John’s Pure Stock feature, Rick Elkins, Jr. was picking cars off to close in. After catching the leader, Elkins drove to the outside lane and challenged McMasters each circuit. On the final lap of a very exciting race, Elkins had a great run off of turn four to just edge McMasters by inches. Both drivers ran an extremely clean and exciting race with each other for the top two spots to put on a good show for the fans the stuck around for the final event. Elkins was followed by McMasters, Randy Smart, Teddy Oliver, and Jimmy Orr. Doug Decker, Ryan Tedesco, Rich Schweitzer, Chuck Elkins, and Keith Anderson finished off the top ten. McMasters won the fast heat, while Tedesco charged from the back of heat #2 in David Breehl’s #49 to take the victory. Randy Smart was again fast qualifier for the fifth week straight. Smart set a new track record with a 16.95.

Racing continues this coming Saturday, May 13 with the return of the Compact Figure 8 class for their second event. Late Models, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Compact will all be in action. Admission prices will remain the same at $10 for adults, $8 for seniors 62+, $6 for kids 6-15, and children 5 and under are free. Pits will open at 2:00, hotlaps will start at 2:30, qualifying will be at 4:20, and racing will start at 6:30. For more information on racing at Midvale, go to www.midvalespeedway.com.
