2026 Race Season
Carter & Dague First Time 2006 Winners
April 29, 2006

Carter & Dague First Time 2006 Winners
After two straight weeks of mild controversy, hot tempers, and many cautions, racing was back to clean, competitive, and exciting this past Saturday night, April 29 at Midvale Speedway. Only a couple of cars needed trips to the pits behind the tow truck, as Late Models, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Compacts put on a great show.

In Performance Race Fuels Late Model action, Mark Willison found victory lane in the fast heat, while John Sandquist took the second heat race victory. Rich Rohrer and Marcus Malcuit raced from the final two spots to take first and second in the exciting pursuit race. In the 25-lap feature, Sandquist and Jimmy Carter, the 2005-Lorain Speedway point champion, started up front and brought the field in for Terry Colletti’s green flag. On the start, Carter raced out front via the outside lane and would prove to be the man to beat. With Sandquist and others in tow, Carter kept his car in the bottom groove trying not to open the door. Meanwhile, one driver that was working hard to try and make something happen was Duane Dunn. Dunn was one of the very few that tried the outside lane. The Strasburg, Ohio driver has been running the second lane on a regular basis this year, but on the final circuits he lost a few spots dropping out of the top ten. Despite Sandquist looking low a couple of times, Brookpark, Ohio driver Jimmy Carter came across the stripe victorious for the first time at Midvale. Following the Ice Oil Company/Medina Mountain Motors #44 were Sandquist, Willison, Bob Schneider, Jr., and Mike Miller. Completing the top ten were top qualifier Marcus Malcuit, Rohrer, Ron Jaberg, Jr., Doug McMillen, and Tom Garbrandt.

The best race of the night was the Tusco Net Sport Stock 20-lap feature. After point leader Kevin McClintock and Nick Grubbs picked up heat wins and Chris Kail won the pursuit, the 15-car Sport Stock field took the track for their main event. Chris Grubbs and Bill Aubihl started up front for the event which saw three straight cautions trying to get the race’s first lap complete. The third caution caused damage to Will Walker, Nick Grubbs, Chris Kail, and Kurt Waller. After the field was realigned, Ron Dague, Kevin McClintock, and Keith Thomas were the three drivers that were expected to race for the trophy. With a few laps in, Thomas and McClintock got together on the backstretch causing McClintock to spin. However, McClintock admitted fault to allow Thomas his spot back and what an exciting race that set up. With Dague in the lead, many thought that the veteran driver would run away from the field. However, the night’s top qualifier, Thomas, put his car in the outside lane and worked lap-after-lap trying to get the run he needed to get by. As the laps wore down, Thomas inched closer and closer to drawing alongside. On the final circuit, Thomas had nearly drawn neck-and-neck, but slowed for a car off the pace at the end of the backstraightaway. Dague picked up the exciting victory to celebrate his birthday in style, while Thomas, Doug McMillen, Josh Grove, and McClintock rounded out the top five behind the Tolloti Pipe/East Of Chicago Pizza #75. Other top ten finishers were Aubihl, Kail, John Sluka, Bob Passwaters, Sr., and Gabe Pringle.

For the second week straight, a large roll inverted sixteen cars from qualifying for the 15-lap Papa John’s Pure Stock feature. Charles Ritch and Tim Oliver started at the front of the field but dropped quickly when the green was waved. While it made for some exciting racing, it also created tense moments that had drivers in two and three wide battles. Taking control early was Chuck Elkins who was trying to back up his pursuit win with his first feature victory this year. Elkins led until Canton, Ohio’s Teddy Oliver raced into top spot on the 3/10-mile oval. With Oliver out front and the night’s fastest qualifiers, Randy Smart, Rick Elkins, Jr., and Doug Decker caught in traffic, no one else was there to take away his chance at feature win #2 this year. Oliver was first to race under the checkers in his Pittman Performance/Courtney’s Village Inn #50, while Elkins, Decker, Smart, and Chester McMasters rounded out the top five. David Breehl, Rick Elkins, Jr., Jimmy Orr, Rich Schweitzer, and Keith Anderson finished off the top ten. Oliver, Tory Gibbs, and Ritch won the heats, while Smart set fast time with a new track record.

Steven Feister and Tammy Rufener were front row starters in the 15-lap fast feature for the Trails End Sports Compacts. Feister moved quickly into the lead as drivers jostled throughout the pack. Coming into the night, Kenny Ford was the point leader in the class and after picking up a heat win, he raced past Feister to lead the field in the main event. However, during his run, he was clocked under his qualifying time and that ended his night. Back in front was Feister trying to hold off challenges from Don Rufener, Jr. after he made a great run through the field. Rufener had just slightly edged ahead when a caution came out, putting him in front for the two-lap shootout. From that point on, it was all Rufener in his Performance Graphix/Auto Zone #47. Feister, Ron Myers, Adam Mishler, and Neil Rolli completed the top five. Blake Mackey, Troy McMath, Jason Morgan, Tad Grove, and Tammy Rufener completed the top ten.

Jesse Page led for much of the second half of the Compact B-feature, but was clocked under his time at the stripe on the white flag lap end his chance for feature win #2 of the year. That put Brad Henry, who was challenging for the lead, in victory lane for his first career win. The elated Henry was followed across the stripe by Mike Gribble, Kenny Jewell, Steve Roth, and Jason Anthony. Johnny Campbell, Tammy Ondo, Paul Stull, Jason Dotson, and Ryan Kopp were top ten finishers.

Another first time winner on the night was Jaimie Huebner. The Compact veteran took over the lead after the first and second place cars were clocked under their qualifying times. Following Huebner were Bruce Gibson, Jill Harshey, Joe Fitch, and Jason Grewell. Mark Willison, Jr., Pat Moore, Howard Bartholow, Cody Shuss, and John Wissman, Jr. were top ten finishers.

Compact preliminary heat wins were claimed by Neil Rolli, Kenny Ford, Jesse Page, Jason Grewell, and Jaimie Huebner. Don Rufener, Jr. won the pursuit race.

Racing action will move to week #5 on Saturday night, May 6. Late Models, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Compacts will all race. Joining the four regular divisions will be the Legend cars for their first appearance of the 2006 season. Admission prices will remain the same at $10 for adults, $8 for seniors 62+, $6 for kids 6-15, and children 5 and under are free. Pits will open at 2:00, hotlaps will start at 2:30, qualifying will be at 4:20, and racing will start at 6:30. For more information on racing at Midvale, go to www.midvalespeedway.com.
