Tedesco Claims Win In Rough LM Feature
April 15, 2006

Tedesco Claims Win In Rough LM Feature
Warmer weather, a larger field of cars, a sizable crowd, and aggressive driving were all present in week #2 of the 2006 racing season. Late Models, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Compacts raced in heats, pursuits, and features, while spectator drags and the Easter Bunny made special appearances.

In the 25-lap Performance Race Fuels Late Model feature, Ed Middaugh and Bob Schneider, Jr. were the front row starters in the 17-car field. On the opening start, Middaugh jumped out into the early lead, while Schneider had to check up in the outside lane. Meanwhile, inside row starters, Mike Miller and Rich Rohrer were quickly working their way towards the front. Once Miller and Rohrer were able to work around Tom Garbrandt, they settled in behind race leader, Middaugh. However, after a few laps of Miller’s pressure, Middaugh looped his car in turn four sending him to the tail for the restart. Back to green, it was Miller, Rohrer, and Ryan Tedesco one, two, three. Rohrer twice nosed up under Miller to no avail. However, coming through three and four, the race runner-up got a strong run, went to the inside as the duo rubbed some paint. As Miller tried his best to close the door on the frontstretch, the two again made contact. Miller spun across the infield grass and up into the wall, while Rohrer came back across the track in front of oncoming traffic. Garbrandt was collected in the accident ending his night, while Tedesco was able to avoid contact and took over the lead for the restart. Rohrer’s night ended, while Miller restarted from the tail. Over the last few laps, Tedesco pulled away as Schneider finished a strong second while holding off a last lap charge by Marcus Malcuit. Malcuit came from the back after an earlier caution. Following the Marathon Manufacturing #70 of Tedesco were Schneider, Malcuit, Mark Willison, and Duane Dunn. Middaugh, John Sandquist, Ron Jaberg, Jr., Miller, and Garbrandt completed the top ten. Miller won the fast heat, while Middaugh won the second heat and the pursuit. Jaberg set fast time with a 14.63.

Tusco Net Sport Stock division racing was again very competitive in the 20-lap feature. Jeff Lanzer and Nick Grubbs started up front for the event, while Kurt Waller was also a front runner for much of the race. Cars coming from deep in the field to challenge the leaders were Keith Thomas, Kevin McClintock, and Ron Dague. Thomas was the first to challenge. However, while racing with the leaders, Thomas’s #34 again experienced some mechanical problems and the defending point champion pulled into the pits. That gave Dague a chance to fly into the lead and that he did. The New Philadelphia, Ohio driver looked to have the field covered for his first win in a couple of years, but during a caution, water started pouring out of the overflow on his #75 racer. Unfortunately for Dague, that ended his night and gave top qualifier Doug McMillen the break he needed to race out front on his way to his first victory of the season. Following the Dale’s Heating & Cooling/Performance Race Fuels #54 were Waller who ran in the top two spots for most of the race, McClintock, Chris Kail who backed up his win a week ago with a strong run, and Gabe Pringle. Bill Weaver, Dague, Joe Sanford, Jr., Grubbs, and Will Walker were the rest of the top ten. Walker won the fast heat, while Waller took heat and pursuit wins. McMillen’s fast time was a 15.59.

Teddy Oliver raced his way to a heat and pursuit win to back up his previous week’s feature victory in the Papa John’s Pure Stock division. While trying for the clean sweep in the 15-lap A-feature, the Canton, Ohio driver was leading early, but mechanical problems forced him pit-side. That moved one of the race’s hard chargers, Al Street, out front. Street, while building up a huge lead, had no worries in the world until top qualifier Randy Smart raced into second. While most thought that Smart would need a yellow to catch the leader, the two-time defending point champion quickly closed the huge gap and raced to the outside for a lead battle. As flagman Terry Colletti waved the checkered, Smart was victorious by a small margin over Street. Following the Weaver Barns/Kurt Garren, MD. #17 were Street, Rich Schweitzer, Doug Decker, and Mike Phillips, Jr. Rick Elkins, Jr., Rick Elkins, Sr., Teddy Oliver, Calvin Collins, and John Leasure.

In the Papa John’s Pure Stock B-feature, Magnolia, Ohio driver Chris Miller started working his way from the sixth starting spot in the early going. Miller using the outside lane to make many of his passes, was able to take the lead and go on to victory. The Bowling’s Used Cars/Canton South Car Wash #70 was followed by Keith Anderson, Tory Gibbs, Lou Francis, and Charles Ritch. Bob Passwaters, Sr., Tim Oliver, Charlie Childress, and Tim Rodgers picked up top ten finishes.

It was another great night of racing for the Trails End Sports Compact division. Each and every week over the last couple of seasons, the fast feature in the class has been competitive and exciting. This past week’s race had Troy McMath starting on the pole with Adam Mishler starting alongside. McMath was looking for his first career feature win after several close calls and this night’s chance was his best. Lap-after-lap with previous week’s winner Kenny Ford in tow, McMath ran a good lane to stay out front. As the laps wore down, the only serious challenge was going to come from top qualifier John McNutt, but the veteran’s car sputtered and shut off while running the outside lane. At the end, it was McMath taking the victory in his McMath Construction/Learn & Play Development Center #64. Ford, Tad Grove, Mishler, and Ron Myers finished off the top five. Josh Irwin, Don Rufener, Jr., Mike Hostetler, Jason Morgan, and Jim Poole completed the top ten.

The second feature saw Waynesburg, Ohio driver Jesse Page racing to the front mid-race. His main challenge came from Tammy Rufener who closed in during the final circuits. The Martins Farm/John Hornbrook Attorney #02 proved to be too much though, as Page picked up his first feature victory of the year. Rufener, Bubba Smith, Johnny Campbell, and Mike Gribble were top five finishers. Kevin Rennicker, Bill Wilkin, Chris Bloom, Jim Campbell, and Ryan Kopp also picked up top tens.

Kenny Jewell got by first time driver Paul Murray, Jr. to win the third Compact feature. The Di-Walt Optical/Norm’s Variety #76 was followed by Murray, Bob Passwaters, Jr., Tammy Ondo, and Paul Stull. Bruce Gibson, Cody Shuss, Steve Roth, Bob Viertel, and Joe Fitch finished in position six through ten.

McMath, Rennicker, Page, Roth, and Gibson won the heats, Blake Mackey took the pursuit, and McNutt set fast time with an 18.15.

Racing action will move to week #3 on Saturday night, April 22. Late Models, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Compacts will all race. The special feature of the night will be a Compact Figure 8 race paying 100, 75, 50, 35, 25, 20 for the top six spots. Pits will open at 2:00, hotlaps will start at 2:30, qualifying will be at 4:20, and racing will start at 6:30. For more information on racing at Midvale, go to www.midvalespeedway.com.
