Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2026 Race Season |
 | April 8, 2006 |
Despite morning and evening temperatures in the 30’s, the 2006 season opener was an exciting success this past Saturday, April 8 at Midvale Speedway. Late Model, Sport Stock, Pure Stock, and Compact drivers all put on fine shows while the fans tries to stay warm.
In the Performance Race Fuels Late Model division, Strasburg, Ohio driver Marcus Malcuit returned to the “A” class in strong fashion by setting the Swan Fabrication top time with a 14.59. After rolling an eight on the qualifying dice, eighth fastest qualifier Bob Schneider, Jr. started on the pole with Ryan Tedesco flanking him to the outside. On the original start, Tedesco got the jump and raced into turn one as the leader. However, a Ron Jaberg, Jr./Bob Sibila, Jr., spin brought out the caution and lined the cars up for a restart. On the second try, Schneider had a better start and edged ahead of Tedesco. As Tedesco was dashing to the outside, his car slid sideways and spun in turn one with a lap complete. Once back to green, Schneider was running strong out front. However, a few cars behind him, Malcuit was dicing his way to the front. As the early laps clicked off, Malcuit had worked his way into second. Putting his car in the outside groove, the Late Model veteran raced into the lead to pick up the first feature win of the year. 2005 champion, Mike Miller came home second, while Don Harvey, Jr., Duane Dunn, and Ryan Tedesco finished off the top five. Schneider, Mark Willison, Sibila, Tom Garbrandt, and Darrel Dexter rounded out the top ten. Tedesco and Willison were the heat winners.
The Tusco Net Sport Stock division was as competitive as ever on Saturday night, despite a low car count for the opener. In heat race action, sophomore Sport Stock driver Josh Grove held off the field of challengers for the victory. For the 20-lap feature, Grove started on the outside of the front row, but it was Dover, Ohio driver Chris Kail darting into the early lead from his pole position. Kail, who impressed many with his fast laps during test and tune last week, continued his impressive early season run by leading main event competitors. His main challenge was to no one’s surprise, Keith Thomas. Thomas, who had won seven in a row to finish off last season, was trying to continue his win streak into this year. After wrestling his car in the outside lane for several laps, top qualifier Kevin McClintock slid by on the inside to take second. As the checkered waved, Kail picked up his first career feature victory in his JB’s Carpet Installation/WA Day Development #10. He dedicated the victory to his late Grandpa, Eddie Warmack, a former flagman at Midvale Speedway. McClintock, Thomas, Ron Dague, and Josh Grove finished off the top five. Other top ten finishers were Gabe Pringle, Nick Grubbs, Will Walker, Kurt Waller, and Chris Grubbs.
Jimmy Orr worked by front row starters Doug Higgins and Chuck Elkins to take the early lead during the 15-lap Papa John’s Pure Stock feature. Orr, while in the lead, experienced some mechanical problems and left the track during green conditions. That put Teddy Oliver in control and the Canton, Ohio driver battled setup problems to lead the field around the 3/10-mile oval. At the finish, the Pitman Performance/Midas Auto Service #50 picked up the win followed by Chester McMasters in his career best finish, Rich Schweitzer and Rick Elkins, Jr. behind the wheels of their brand new cars, and Chuck Elkins. Chris Miller, John Leasure, Randy Smart, Lou Francis and Charles Ritch completed the top ten. Schweitzer, Chuck Elkins, and Leasure won the heats, while Randy Smart set the J.D. Byrider fast time.
After a dicey Trails End Sports Compact fast heat, the fast feature was expected to be as nip and tuck. However, Kenny Ford and Blake Mackey were able to pull away from the field as positions 3-8 all battled for better spots. Ford had a several car length lead on the race’s runner-up before Mackey was able to reel him back in. After a lap 12 restart, Ford was able to keep his CEI Canton Erectors/We Got It Auto #67 out front to pick up the first Compact feature win of the year. Mackey came home second in the #157, while John McNutt rallied for third, Josh Irwin finished fourth and Don Rufener, Jr., had strong run for fifth. Tad Grove, Adam Mishler, Ron Myers, Mike Hostetler, and Brad Henry were other top ten cars.
Jason Anthony held off a late challenge from Jason Morgan to win the second feature for the Compact class. Anthony, in the Canton Auto Sales and Salvage/Schneider Drywall #6, was followed by Morgan, Jesse Page, Pat Carnes, and Johnny Campbell. Jill Harshey finished sixth, while Tammy Rufener, Ryan Kopp, Paul Stull, and Jay Hunt finished the top ten.
Mike Gribble, of New Philadelphia, won the third feature with a last lap pass of Jim Campbell. Following the Gribble Jr. and Son Trucking/Hambleton Concrete #11 were Campbell, Kenny Jewell, Lennie Orr, and Mark Willison, Jr. Joe Fitch, John Riehl, Howard Bartholow, Cody Shuss, and Larry Ennis were also top ten competitors.
Racing action will move to week #2 on Saturday night, April 15. Late Models, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Compacts will all race. Spectator Drags will be held at intermission and it has been reported that the Easter Bunny will be there. Pits will open at 2:00, hotlaps will start at 2:30, qualifying will be at 4:20, and racing will start at 6:30. For more information on racing at Midvale, go to www.midvalespeedway.com.
