Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2026 Race Season |
 | September 18, 2005 |
140 drivers were in action for the season ending, 2005 Dover-Phila Federal Credit Union Fall Classic. Qualifying, heats, pursuits, spectator drags, and a non-winners race for Compacts filled up an exciting card for Saturday night, while feature action was run on Sunday afternoon.
Headlining the weekend’s show was the 50-lap Performance Race Fuels Late Model feature. In Saturday afternoon qualifying, Late Model ace Rich Rohrer set the fastest time by tying the track record at a 14.49. Afterwards, Rohrer rolled an “11” with the three dice, slotting him that spot for the feature event. Starting up front and leading the early laps was Cleveland, Ohio driver Bobby Porter. After several circuits had passed, John Crumrine, the third place starter, made his move for the lead and the two made contact in turn three racing for the same piece of real estate. The caution waved, neither driver admitted and both took the tail. That handed the lead to Stow, Ohio driver Bob Gainer. Gainer led for a while as the top two qualifiers, Rohrer and Don Harvey, Jr. worked their way to the front. Harvey moved into the lead, by way of the outside lane, while Rohrer and Gainer raced for second. Eventually Rohrer worked into the runner-up spot behind the stout car of Harvey. A couple of cautions slowed the field and bunched up the competitors, but each time Harvey was able to put a stranglehold on the top position. Meanwhile, the next quickest car in the field, Mike Miller, was working his way back to the front after getting shuffled back early. Miller raced to the highside of Gainer and moved into third. At the checkered, Barberton, Ohio driver Don Harvey, Jr. was victorious for the second time in three weeks, while Rohrer and Miller finished nose-to-tail in second and third. Norm Taylor had an impressive run to come home fourth after an early spin and Mark Willison came from the final starting spot to record a fifth place finish. Foster Mackey, Paul Adkins, Dave Wagner, Mike Enos, and Bernie Minnick were the rest of the top ten. Jimmy Carter, John Crumrine, and Tony Urdiales won the Saturday night heat races. Ed Middaugh won the pursuit.
Saturday afternoon qualifying was led by Dave Wagner in the Sport Stock division. Wagner, coming off a Late Model feature win the previous week, had a couple of strong runs on Saturday night, but on Sunday, elected to run the Late Model feature as his car did not meet wheelbase requirements. In feature action, Chris Kail and Don Rufener, Jr. raced out front during the early laps of the 40-circuit event. Making an impressive run early was Dover, Ohio driver Kevin McClintock. After a long season of mechanical woes, McClintock was running on all cylinders and moved out front. Hot on his heels, though, was Joe Linard and Keith Thomas. Linard was coming off of an impressive pursuit win on Saturday night, while Thomas was looking for his seventh feature win in-a-row. Linard raced by McClintock to the highside, as did Thomas. Left out front to battle it out, Linard and Thomas worked away from the field. However, a win for Linard was not meant to be as the engine blew heading down the frontstretch. That gave the lead to Thomas and the only thing left was the laps left before his 9th checkered flag of the season. At the stripe, the Midvale, Ohio driver was followed by McClintock, Kurt Waller, Jim Ripley, and Gabe Pringle. Bill Hilliker, Don Rufener, Jr., Chris Kail, Calvin Collins, and Nick Grubbs completed the top ten. Jim Ripley and Chris Grubbs won the heat races.
The Papa John’s Pure Stock 30-lapper was a fan thriller, as racing was exciting and controversial throughout. Cars were racing two and three wide for the top prize. Top qualifier, Teddy Oliver, moved out front after a strong early run. Once out front, though, his car seemed to fade a bit. Randy Smart, the 2005-point champion, was coming on strong in the second lane. Smart was racing alongside Oliver for the lead and, after a handful of laps, started to edge ahead. As the duo raced off of the second turn, Oliver slid up the banking, clipping the #17 of Smart. The caution waved, both were charged with the yellow, and were sent to the back as neither admitted. Once the green again waved, the two again had a mishap and Oliver’s night was over. Gavin Sekulich, Scott Archer, and Chris Mick were on the move, as Chuck Elkins ran up front. Eventually, Archer had the lead and was on his way to victory. The Canton, Ohio driver was followed at the finish by Sekulich, who settled into second after Archer took the lead from him, Smart who came from the back to finish third, and Chuck Elkins and Rich Schweitzer in fourth and fifth. The rest of the top ten finishers were Dan Mick, Chris Mick, Chris Miller, Mike Harbour, and Chester McMasters. Sekulich, Parson, and McMasters won the heat races. Parson also won the pursuit.
Legend car feature racing was rather exciting as 15-year old Dallas, Texas driver James Buescher set fast time in qualifying with a 15.98. Coming from the tenth position, Buescher methodically worked his way slowly into the top five. As the laps ticked off, Buescher was in the top three and moments later racing in second behind Larry Young, the leader. With more than a handful of laps remaining, Buescher passed Young on the lowside entering turn one. Exiting turn two, however, Young made a veteran move to shoot back by on the inside. As the laps wound down, it looked like Young’s move was going to win him the race. However, with two laps to go, the door opened just enough for the Texas native as he bolted back into the top spot. At the checkered, Buescher was followed by Young, Craig Haack, Rick Riffle, and Tim Davis. Steven Abbey, Jason Knox, Dean Abbey, Fred Davis, and Tom Spisak completed the top ten. Heat winners were Young, Fred Davis, and Mark Lushes.
On Saturday night, Uhrichsville, Ohio driver Adam Mishler competed and was victorious in the non-winners race. The event was held for any semi-regular or regular Compact driver that had not picked up a checkered flag that season. On Sunday afternoon, Mishler was moving through the pack in the early laps and in great position to pick up his biggest career win and a $300 top prize. With Don Rufener, Jr. in tow, Mishler was able to race by Jim Poole in the second groove and take the lead. Mishler, who has been top qualifier on a couple of occasions this season, was too strong for anyone else to challenge and the relatively young competitor was on his way to victory. Rufener came home second, Jim Poole third, Tom Barrett fourth, and Terry Colletti fifth. Completing the top ten were Ron Myers, Troy McMath, John McNutt, Kenny Ford, and Brad Henry.
The second Compact feature had strong racing from several competitors. Top of the line racecars in the event were Randy Cecil, a Barberton Speedway regular and Jason Morgan, a Midvale Speedway regular. Morgan was fighting to take the lead, but one of his problems was a flat left rear tire. The Minerva, Ohio driver kept fighting though and had enough to challenge Cecil. However, at the checkered, Randy Cecil was victorious. Morgan, Kenny Jewell, Mike Roth, and Johnny Campbell completed the top five. Other top ten drivers were Tammy Rufener, Jill Harshey, Jason Dotson, Richard Raupach, and Paul Stull.
Mike Carnes and Earl Scranton were the class of the field for the slow Compact feature. Carnes, racing for the second time this season at Midvale was able to beat Scranton to the front of the pack and that made all the difference in the final outcome. When the 20-lapper was complete, Carnes was celebrating victory, while Scranton, Jim Campbell, Ryan Kopp, and John Riehl rounded out the top five. Howard Bartholow, Buzz Bender, Mark A. McCoy, Tim Croft, and Tammy Ondo finished in positions six through ten.
Compact heat race wins were claimed by Tom Barrett, Jim Poole, Derek Grewell, Scott Lucas, Earl Scranton, and Frank Carson. Josh Irwin won the pursuit race and Terry Colletti was the top qualifier.
The only Figure 8 race of the season was held for the final race of the year. The instant the green was waved, drivers started rearranging one another’s body panels. Jason Morgan raced out front early and was only challenged once by Dan Grewell. Grewell was able to catch Morgan when a lapped car took the leader sideways. When Grewell got by, Morgan used the chrome horn to move back by and go on to an exciting victory. The weekend’s hardest hit came when the Campbell brothers, Jim and John, hit at the intersection. Both drivers were okay and race continued on. The top four were Morgan, Grewell, Tim Croft, and Chris Bloom.
With that, the 2005-racing season has come to an end. The next event will be the Fall Pro-Formance Swap Meet at the Stark County Fairgrounds on November 12-13. Division rules for the 2006-season will be handed out and tickets for the January 14 banquet will be on sale. Management of Midvale Speedway would like to thank everyone for the help and support of racing during the 2005-racing season.
