Mid-Season Champions Crowned
June 25, 2005

Mid-Season Champions Crowned
The midpoint of the 2005-racing season has arrived and passed at Midvale Speedway, as the Mid Season Championships were held this past Saturday, June 25. Over 100 drivers graced the pit area in the four divisions of racing.

Another list of stellar Late Model driver names were in the pits competing for the 25-lap feature trophy, including the likes of Rich Rohrer, Mike Miller, Don Harvey, Jr., John Crumrine, and Phil Rozum who were all parked side-by-side in the pit area. After qualifying, Harvey rolled the three inversion dice and came up with the smallest number of the year, six. That put sixth fastest qualifier, Bubba Smith, on the pole for the event. When the green dropped, Smith raced out front, as Tom Garbrandt slipped back and Miller took second. On the second circuit, one of the hardest crashes in the history of Midvale Speedway took place. Exiting turn two, Rozum and Rohrer were running side-by-side. As the cars reached the halfway mark of the backstretch, Rozum’s car went up the banking slightly, clipping the car of Rohrer, careening both cars toward the outside wall. Rohrer was eventually able to slow to avoid real serious damage, but Rozum’s car went full blast into the turn three wall. The Cleveland, Ohio driver climbed out of the car under his own power, but was transferred to the hospital for biting his tongue and feeling a bit woozy. The car was a total loss, as the whole right side was ripped off and even the valve train on the right side of the engine was pushed right out of the valve cover. It was an unfortunate accident, as everyone knew that three or four feature wins were in the future for Rozum this season. Back to green, Smith again stretched his lead. However, over the final couple of circuits, Miller started reeling him in, as the leader’s handle started going away. The Canton, Ohio driver did hang on to the victory, his second in a row and the third of the year for the 16-year old rookie in the Smith’s Auto Sales/Canton Auto Salvage #12. Miller, Garbrandt, Harvey, and Crumrine finished off the top five. The rest of the top ten were Greg Beule, Mark Enos, Bob Schneider, Jr., Todd Ripley, and Bob Eichel. Rohrer won the fast heat, while Schneider won the second heat and the pursuit. Harvey was again the top qualifier.

In the fast heat race for the Tusco Net Sport Stock division, last week’s feature winner, Gabe Pringle, hit the outside retaining wall in the frontstretch. With serious front-end damage, it looked unlikely that Pringle would be able to make a feature start. However, after hard work in the pits and help from fellow competitors, Pringle started the pursuit and the feature. In the 20-lap feature race, the Dennison, Ohio driver started on the front row with John Tantarelli, Jr. With Tantarelli experiencing clutch problems, Pringle was able to race out front and take control of the event. On the move was point leader Roger Linard. Linard started hounding Pringle in the second groove and the duo raced side-by-side for several laps. Finally, Linard slipped back a little and Keith Thomas worked into second. Over the last couple of laps, Thomas tried diligently to get around the leader, but it was Pringle winning his second in a row. Thomas, Linard, Wes Gilland, and Kevin McClintock followed the Smitley Realty and Lucretia Sherer #8 across the stripe. Josh Grove, Don Rufener, Jr., Paul Murray, Chad Dixon, and Nick Grubbs completed the top ten. Gilland and Rufener won the heats, while Linard took the pursuit. Gilland set fast time.

Papa John’s Pure Stock feature racing saw John Leasure and Chuck Elkins start up front for the 15-lapper, but before anyone could blink an eye, the night’s top qualifier, Al Street, raced his way from the seventh position to take the lead. Street was not messing around on this night, as the Malvern, Ohio driver booked it early. The battles were from second on back, and they were pretty exciting. At the finish, the Middlebranch Auto/United Auto Sales #73 of Street ran away from Rick Elkins, Jr., John Leasure, Scott Archer, and Chuck Elkins. Rich Schweitzer, Blake Mackey, Paul Parson, Rob Scott, and Chris Miller completed the top ten. Chad Nickison won the first heat in his first career race at Midvale Speedway, while Schweitzer and Ken Feister won the second and third heats respectively. Scott won the pursuit. Street picked up the $125 J.D. Byrider of Dover top qualifier/win feature bonus money. It has again been reset to $25 for this Sunday.

In the Musick & Myers Heating & Cooling Compact fast feature, Ron Myers was looking for a clean sweep, as he earlier won the heat and pursuit. Myers led all of the early laps, but it was top qualifier, Dale Beatty, who was on the move. Beatty worked into the second spot and, late in the race, started working on Myers. The leader did a nice job protecting the bottom, so Beatty went to the outside. As the drivers exited turn four with a couple laps to go, Myers slid up the banking, and nearly spun as the drivers made contact. However, Beatty gave it one last try, made it stick, and went on to pick up the feature win. Myers came home second, Adam Mishler third, Troy McMath fourth, and Tom Barrett fifth. The rest of the top ten were Tad Grove, Shawanna Myers, Josh Irwin, Jason Morgan, and Kenny Ford.

Bruce Gibson led for most of the second Compact feature and went on to pick up the victory. Neil Rolli came home second, while Tammy Rufener, Mike Pyle, and Mike Gribble were the rest of the official top five. Rounding out the top ten were Mickey Green, Cody Shuss, James Domer, Kenny Jewell, and Jesse Page.

In the third and final Compact feature, Jaimie Huebner looked to be on his way to victory, but was clocked going under his qualifying time. That put Jill Harshey into the lead and the Midvale, Ohio driver was able to fend off challenges from Jim Campbell, Johnny Campbell, and Mike Jones. At the finish, Harshey won, Jim Campbell finished second, Jones third, Johnny Campbell fourth, and Dave Conrad fifth. The rest of the top ten were Bill Wilkin, Steve Roth, Barb Feister, Pat Carnes, and Steve Roth.

Myers won the fast heat and pursuit, while Gibson, Page, Earl Scranton, and Wilkin won the other heats.

Racing action continues this coming Sunday, July 3, as the Main Event Racing Series Super Lates will run 100 laps. Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Compacts will also run. Pit gates open at 1, Midvale hotlaps are from 2-3, MERS hotlaps 3-4, Midvale qualifying 4-5, and MERS qualifying is at 5. Racing will start at 6:30. The raindate is Monday, July 4 at 4:00.

The Sport Stock top qualifier will be running for the $225 Fuel Depot award if he can win the feature and if the Pure Stock top qualifier wins the feature, he will pick up an additional $25 courtesy of J.D. Byrider of Dover. Gabe Pringle, the Sport Stock feature winner was the DLC Racing Equipment Hard Charger of the night, as he was able to handle challenges from a couple of drivers after fixing his car from an early evening crash.
