2026 Race Season
Middaugh, Jewell, Breehl, & McNutt Top Winners
April 16, 2005

Middaugh, Jewell, Breehl, & McNutt Top Winners
For the second week straight to start the season, over 100 racecars were again in the pits for racing action at Midvale Speedway. Late Models, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Compacts all competed as well as the Spectator Drags at intermission.

In the stellar Performance Race Fuels Late Model division, Massillon, Ohio driver Ed Middaugh backed up his strong pursuit race win with another good run in feature action. Via the outside lane, Middaugh took the advantage on the opening start against Todd Miller. As cars raced to turn three, an accident took place restarting the field in their original starting positions. Again, it was Middaugh getting the better start. He paced the field lap-after-lap with no serious challenge coming forth. Todd Miller held the second spot, while Mark Willison raced back in third. Cars that were dicing included Tom Garbrandt, Mike Miller, Marcus Malcuit, and Ryan Tedesco. The outside lane, that was decent opening night, proved to be pretty slick on night number two. It really did not come in until late in the race and that allowed Garbrandt, Tedesco, and Miller to work by Malcuit on the highside. At the checkered, Middaugh picked up his first Late Model win behind the wheel of the Advanced Maitenance #84. In victory lane, he gave credit to long-time Midvale driver, Bob Sibila, for the great setup. Todd Miller, Willison, Garbrandt, and Tedesco completed the top five. Rounding out the top ten were Mike Miller, Malcuit, Doug McMillen, Mark Enos, and Dave Watson. Bubba Smith and Travis Devore won the heats, while Mike Miller set fast time at a 14.59.

The best races of the night may have come in the Tusco Net Sport Stock division. Backing up an exciting pursuit that saw only Roger Linard and Keith Thomas finish, was the feature race. Jimmy Orr started on the pole with Glen Jewell starting second in the 20-lap main event. Jewell took advantage using the outside lane and moved out front early. His first main challenger was opening night heat, pursuit, and feature winner Doug McMillen. McMillen went the outside lane, but Jewell was just quick enough to edge ahead. Challenger number two was John Tantarelli, Jr. who has had a great start to the racing season after blowing two engines before it started. Roger Linard, Kevin McClintock, and Keith Thomas also were faster than Jewell, but the veteran driver never made a mistake and hung on for the satisfying victory. Jewell stated in victory lane that the win was needed, as he has been struggling a little since jumping out of his championship Modified into the Sport Stock. Following the Texas Roadhouse/Real Living Reps #24 were Tantarelli, Linard, McClintock, and Gabe Pringle. Don Rufener, Jr., McMillen, Wes Gilland, Thomas, and Orr finished off the top ten. Linard and Rufener won heats, while Thomas set fast time with a 15.56.

In Papa John’s Pure Stock racing, David Breehl started on the pole with Blake Mackey alongside in the 15-lap event. After racing side-by-side for a couple of circuits, Breehl was able to race out front to solidify his lead. At that point, Chuck Elkins, Rick Elkins, Jr., Al Street, Scott Archer and Greg Grove were moving forward. Street was racing to the front the fastest with Grove right behind. Grove, however, after getting close to the top spot, had mechanical problems that brought out a yellow and eventually sent him pitside. That basically left it up to Street to take Breehl’s first win away. He could not, and Breehl went on to his first feature win during his rookie Pure Stock season. Street followed the Kinser Lanes/Breehl’s Auto Detailing #49 as did Chuck Elkins, Scott Archer, and Rick Elkins, Jr. Randy Smart, Rich Schweitzer, Mackey, Joe Oliver, and Paul Parson completed the top ten. Street, Bryant Smith, and Ken Feister won the heats, while Breehl also took the pursuit win. Smart set fast time at a 17.41.

The fast feature for the Musick & Myers Compacts saw 15-cars take the green flag. Lissa Courtney and Troy McMath started on the front row for the 15-lapper, and it was McMath racing into the lead. McMath led for a while, but for the second week in a row, top qualifier, John McNutt was coming through the field quickly. McNutt raced into the lead, a little earlier in the race that the week before and picked up the victory. The Uhrichsville, Ohio driver was followed to his second victory in as many weeks by Kelly McNutt, Troy McMath, Adam Mishler, and Randy Smart. Rounding out the top ten were Shawn Musick, Jack Grove, Tye Kelly, Don Rufener, Jr., and Jason Morgan. Nick Grubbs originally came home third, but did not elect to go through tech, thus losing his finishing position.

In the second Compact feature, Jesse Page and Mike Pyle started up front. Page led early, with Mike Gribble and Pyle close behind. Perry Nave, who started close to the tenth position, was dicing quickly through the field. After working by Eric Anderson, Mike Gribble, Kenny Jewell, and Jesse Page, the Strasburg, Ohio driver was in front and racing to the checkered. The team car to Pure Stock feature winner David Breehl was followed by Page, Anderson, Gribble, and Jewell. Rounding out the top ten were Pyle, Chris Smith, Ron Myers, Jill Harshey, and Neil Rolli.

And in the final Compact race, Tommy Fantin led early, but Richard Duvall eventually raced himself into the lead after a couple front runners were black flagged for breaking out of their qualifying times. Duvall, driving the Soil Sense Landscaping/John Wissman Trucking #48 was followed at the finish by Mickey Green, Cody Shuss, Chris Bloom, and Bob Viertel. Rounding out the top ten were Ryan Kopp, Barb Feister, Violet McMasters, Paul Stull, and John Wissman, Jr.

Compact preliminaries went to Jason Morgan, Eric Anderson, Mike Gribble, Cody Shuss, and Joe Elerick. Kyle Grewell took the pursuit.

Jon Dean won his third straight Spectator Drag event, besting 20 other competitors for the victory. Dean was behind the wheel of a 2003 Subaru WRX.

This coming Saturday, April 23, the Performance Race Fuels Late Model division will run extra laps and see extra money for their feature event. It will be the first of six races for the Lorain Speedway-Midvale Speedway Super 6 Series. Many cars are expected for the 35-lapper. Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Compacts will also race heats, pursuits, and features. Admission prices will be $10 for adults, $8 for seniors 62+, and $6 for kids 6-15. Qualifying is from 4-6, while racing will take place at 6:30.

The Late Model top qualifier will have a chance at the $150 cash bonus if he can win the feature, sponsored by Randy Sayre Tire & Muffler. The Sport Stock Fuel Depot award is up to $75, as is the Pure Stock J.D. Byrider of Dover top qualifier award. Kelly McNutt picked up this week’s DLC Racing Equipment Hard Charger award, as his uncle John won it the week before. He will pick up an item courtesy of DLC Racing Equipment of Painesville next week.
