<center>Thrilling Season Opener Race Results</centerThe 2005-racing season started off on an exciting note under the leadership of new owners, Bear and Karen Schwartz. Over 100 cars were in the pits for the four divisions of race action.

17 Performance Race Fuels Late Models were in the pits for the first night of racing. However, due to a couple of mechanical issues, only 14 started the 25-lap feature. Travis Devore and Mike Enos were scheduled to start on the front row of the main event, but a pre-race fire eliminated Enos, while Devore took scratch. After the Frank Williams’ owned, Richard Petty pace car exited the speedway, fans were ready for and exciting race. They got what they asked for. Rich Marcum beat Tom Feller, Jr. to turn two on the start. Marcum led the field, while Feller hung on to an ill-handling car as he dropped back. As the middle-part of the race went on, Marcum led Todd Ripley and Bubba Smith around the speedway, while veterans Rich Rohrer and Mike Miller tried to dice through the field. A few cautions took place while Marcum held the top spot and looked to be on his way to his first feature win. However, with a few laps to go his car started to push off of turn two. That allowed Ripley to the inside and the duo race into turn three two-wide. Contact took place and Marcum spun as the two raced for the same piece of real estate. Ripley admitted fault, giving Marcum the lead spot back with just a handful of laps to go. When the white flag flew, Marcum pushed high off of the second corner. 16-year old Rookie Bubba Smith dove to the inside going into turn three and raced to the finish picking up a feature win in his first start. Following the Smith’s Auto Sales/Canton Auto Sales #12 were Marcum, Miller, Doug McMillen, and Rohrer. Mark Willison, Ripley, Todd Miller, Feller, and Duane Dunn completed the top ten. Ripley and Willison won the heat races, while Rohrer took the pursuit race win using a variety of inside and outside lane passes that had the large crowd on its feet. McMillen blistered the field in qualifying setting the fast time.

17 Tusco Net Sport Stocks were in the pits for practice on opening night. Again, early season bugs had the feature field at 14 cars, but an exciting race was set up. Doug McMillen, the Late Model top qualifier, who already had won the fast heat and pursuit race in Sport Stock racing, was slotted in the sixth starting position in the feature event. Paul Murray led early but McMillen was on the move. Just like the heat and pursuit, it didn’t take long for the New Philadelphia, OH driver to move out front. John Tantarelli, Jr., who blew two engines already in test and tune sessions, broke a week-long streak of bad luck as he raced into the top five after a strong qualifying effort. At the checkered flag, McMillen the top winning driver from 2004, picked up the win in his Dale’s Heating & Cooling/Haas Body Shop #54, and completed the clean sweep of Saturday’s Sport Stock racing. Tantarelli finished second, Wes Gilland was third, Roger Linard finished fourth, and Gabe Pringle came home fifth. Rounding out the top ten were Josh Grove, Kevin McClintock, Glen Jewell, Paul Murray, and Larry Pringle. Glen Jewell won the second heat race, while Keith Thomas broke the track record to set fast time at a 15.55.

In the Papa John’s Pure Stock division, Blake Mackey and Chuck Elkins started up front for the 15-lapper that saw 18-cars take the green. Mackey led for a handful of laps before Scott Archer started his run using the outside lane. Archer raced away from the field as Elkins, Rick Elkins, Jr., and Greg Grove found their way around Mackey. After Grove took second, Archer was black flagged for going under his qualifying time. At that point, Grove was in the driver seat and Randy Smart, the top qualifier was moving his way into second. Smart’s run was impressive, but not enough, as Grove picked up the feature victory. Following the J.D. Byrider/AAA Travel #3 were Smart, Chuck Elkins, Mackey, and Rick Elkins, Jr. The rest of the top ten were Joe Oliver, Eric Good, Rocky Moore, Paul Parson, and Chris Miller. David Breehl, Mackey, and Ken Feister won the heats, while Rick Elkins, Jr. won the pursuit.

In the fast feature for the Musick & Myers Heating & Cooling Compacts, Don Rufener, Jr. and Kyle Grewell started up front. As always, the Compact race saw dicing for position and strong cars coming from the back looking for the win. Cars on the move were Jack Grove and John McNutt. Grove started tenth, while McNutt started in the 12th slot. On the final circuit, McNutt went to the outside of Grove. As the pair raced off of turn four to the line, Grove went up the banking, the two touched and McNutt slammed the wall. As McNutt rebounded off the wall, his car came across in front of Grove, giving him an exciting victory. As McNutt climbed from his car in victory lane, Grove pulled up alongside him to apologize for the contact. The two shook hands and victory was celebrated by McNutt. The finishing order had McNutt, Grove, Otto Polilli, Randy Smart, and Rufener in the top five. The rest of the top ten were Kelly McNutt, Tye Kelly, Jason Morgan, Russell Grandison, and Jim Miller.

The second feature had rookies Jason Dotson and Chris Bloom starting up front. A balanced field of cars had Ron Myers coming from the 11th starting spot to work his way into the top five and eventually win the B-Main. The Barnhill, Ohio driver was followed by Jesse Page, Kenny Jewell, Bill Wilkin, and Chris Smith. Dotson, Neil Rolli, Mike Pyle, Bob Viertel, and Richard Duvall finished in the top ten.

The third and final feature had Beach City, Ohio’s James Domer starting in the final spot, after he filled in for Lissa Courtney. Lap-by-lap he made his trek through the field, and he timed it right, as he made a last lap pass for the feature victory. Following the Graceful Lotus Adoption Fund/Alborn Excavating #191 were Cody Shuss, Mike Gribble, Pat Carnes, and Mickey Green. The rest of the top ten were Bruce Gibson, Barb Feister, John Riehl, John Wissman, Jr., and Lennie Orr.

Compact preliminary wins went to Tad Grove, Russell Grandison, Kenny Jewell, Steven Feister, and Mickey Green won the heats, while Nick Grubbs took the pursuit. Returning champion, Kelly McNutt took the fast qualifying award.

This coming Saturday, April 16 will see week #2 of the 2005-racing season. Late Models, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Compacts will all race, while the exciting Spectator Drags will be held at intermission. Admission prices will be $10 for adults, $8 for seniors 62+, and $6 for kids 6-15. The Late Model top qualifier will have a chance at a $100 cash bonus sponsored by Randy Sayre Tire & Muffler if he wins the feature, Sport Stocks a Fuel Depot $50 cash bonus, and the Pure Stocks a $50 cash bonus sponsored by J.D. Byrider of Dover. John McNutt, the DLC Racing Equipment Hard Charger, for week #1, will pick out a racing item for his efforts this past weekend.
